I'm glad to see theatre on ice continuing to grow with teams representing many different countries this year.

#6 of 10 teams - Forte Boston (USA) - their Senior choreographic exercise just started, skating to Nyah. ETA: Think they went into 1st place.

Final event of Saturday - Novice teams finish their competition with the FS.

A few Boston connections to this Nations Cup event. Ice dancer TJ Carey (who used to compete with Anna Pettersen) is with one of the Boston teams, I think Act 1 in Juniors.

Also, my coach Amy Vecchio (subject of an 2-part interview on my web site a couple years ago) is coaching the North Shore Diamond Blades team in the Adult division. Although only a few years old, the Diamond Blades team has been doing quite well in Adult.

Villard (senior) ' Carmen 2.0 is the best program I ve seen in years. I would watch it over and over rather than, lets say, some FD from this year including the world champion FD :-D. But the competition will be fierce the US are strong too !

In junior am eager to see Russia, they managed to pack their choreo exercice (aka short program) with everything possible, including double Twist and throw double Salchow ! Each time in triplicate (if not in triplicate an élément does not count). But their program lacked the ballet spirit (theatre on ice is called 'ballet sur glace' in France).

The overall level is impressive ! Maybe because some skaters are not completely unknown : Mark Ladwig, Michael Bramante, Elizaveta Kulik,... The russian judge is Oleg Ovsiannikov.

Boston was quite strong too (4:40:20)

ETA : I think I remember Barcelona having quite a strong team in the past ? How come they aren't in this Nations' Cup ?

They are.
Loïcia Demougeot / Théo Le Mercier, Marie DUPAYAGE / Thomas NABAIS, Lila-maya SECLET MONCHOT / Renan MANCEAU and Lou TERREAUX / Noé PERRON all entered the JGP this season. Others are solo ice dancers. Demougeot / Le Mercier were 8th at junior World.

Rapidly before memories goes slowly away...
It was a really great competition. Definitely more than the usual Ballet competition, the international part brings a lot in the pot. After being last in the CE, it was a great feeling to move up 4 spots

Impressed by the overall level in novice, junior and senior. Loved the winning program of the US novice team, so fresh and authentic, just a bunch of kids having fun on the ice (while bringing content).

In junior you could not escape the overwhelming level of the russian team throwing all possible technical elements everywhere, including 2Twist and throw double jumps (rare to have pairs in ballet). While technically far superior, it lacked the spirit and soul of ballet on ice. On the other hand a US team finished out of the podium, but delivered a great program on 'Blue Danube'. The rythmn is not fast so it's maybe easier to skate, but what a unison ! Great lines, clever choregraphy, a great ballet in the pure classical style. I remember it more than the winning program

In senior the two US team were really strong, Pirates and Raphsody in blue were high caliber. Nevertheless, my hear goes with Villard and Carmen 2.0. I had already seen this ballet, there was a fall from Renan, but this program is... wow hard to define it. Just a number of dance that happens to be on the ice. Love the choreography, the interpretation, the movements are well thoughts and in music, ... would watch it again over than, for example, a world champion FD ;-p .

News that popped the following week is that the Gold Cup and the Nation Cup would be each year now and not each two years. Would not change much for us as we miss the qualification by half a point... we have one year to prepare then

I just watched the Carmen number. That last section was really good. Not sure what the bread thing was meant to be but it looked cool.

I just became the Sport Development Chair in Australia which includes TOI (and Adult and Learn to Skate). I am going to be interested do see this develop in future.
