Everything I've read said that figure skating and short track need different temperatures.

Yes. Andrea even did a little check-in during the short track on how short track likes the ice rock hard and skaters need it soft for landings and they only have a short time to get it prepped for figure skating taking place a few hours later.

The pope didn't do very well mid mens event, so I'm not sure I would trust him.

I would have preferred some of the other teams here, but the Kovalev's managed to put a respectable performance out there. If they stay in for another quad I really, really hope they work on matching their lines a bit, and attempting to relate to each other at all on the ice.
