And, so ends all the skating we are going to see at the 2026 games. What a RIDE it's been. A couple of disappointments here and there and lots of happy tears (mine) cried right along with the happy skaters. What a FABULOUS way to spend 2 weeks of February. :cheer2: :encore:

I'd like to see Ilia drop the quadgod moniker and focus on other parts of his skater so in 2030 he will be known as a great skater and not just his quads. Leave that younger more immature Ilia in the past.

LOL, I thought I'd check it out because I haven't watched one in a long while. Can't believe C&B are still doing that program? On the other hand, great to see the Cellblock Tango with Olympians, and the Panda. No, I am not consistent. ;)

The best part was seeing Carolina doing the opening!

I wasn’t sure due to it being the Olympics and the music rights issues, which is why I watched live. I usually watch the replay and FF through most of it.

Can someone explain how skaters were selected to perform? More specifically....the Russian? She finished 6th. And there were others who finished higher who didn't perform. You'd think this would be a black and white thing... Top 5 finishers in each discipline perform, and throw in a couple of Italians (if they didn't place).... but this makes no sense to me.

I don't know why she was chosen but I thought that of her three skates, this was by far the most I enjoyed Petrosian. She seemed happier, like someone who enjoyed skating as opposed to someone being forced to skate. She is a kid, a chess piece really, in the hands of adults who probably don't care about her long-term well-being. I hope she enjoyed at least some parts of the Olympic experience and won't be treated poorly in Russia or online.

I don’t disagree with you regarding her performance . I just don’t understand how a 6th place skater skated when people who finished in 5th did not - such as Stephen Gogolev. Adam finished in 7th and was asked to perform. And why weren’t Z/K there when the Lithuanians performed? Just doesn’t make any sense.

Thanks for sharing that. Doesn’t make any sense to me at all.
 
There really isn't anything to understand. They invited the top 3 in each discipline, they invited the home country athletes, they invite skaters that they think will be entertaining from different areas of the world. They only had the athletes still in Milan to pick from so probably Z/K had already gone home.

They always do this. They do top X and then they invite people they feel like inviting from the rest. They don't do it by placement after the top X. So the reason they invited Petrosian was that they felt like it and thought it would be a good idea.

Plus it's expensive to stay in whatever city the events are held.

I suspect the committees have seen exhibition of some and pick them for that reason. Some of the US skaters weren't in a order 1-4, but they are there because of team Gold Medal. It makes entertainment value for ilia to skate despite his lower placement

What it boils down to - the committee chooses who they want. It's for us to enjoy
 
ZingKol are still in Italy, as are the rest of the US team as far as I can tell. We'll know for sure tomorrow if they're all at the closing ceremony, but as of Thursday night the entire team was still in Milan.

The USA had 4 skaters invited to participate in the gala - Alysa, Chock/Bates, Amber & Ilia - all of them make way more sense, regardless of their placement in the individual events, than ZingKol would have made. They were all on the Team Event gold-medal winning team, two of them won individual medals and that 8th place guy is the 2x reigning World Champion in his discipline.

There are Japanese fans grumbling over the fact that Mone Chiba wasn't invited. Again, Japan had 5 skaters invited to participate in the gala - Miura/Kihara, Kaori, Ami, Yuma & Shun - all of them won medals in their individual events.

The rest of the invitees, by country:

Italy - 3 - Guignard/Fabbri, Conti/Macii & Grassl
France - 2 - Fournier-Beaudry/Cizeron & Siao Him Fa
South Korea - 2 - Cha & Lee
Canada - Gilles/Poirier
Estonia - Petrokina
Georgia - Metelkina/Berulava
Germany - Hase/Volodin
Hungary - Pavlova/Sviatchenko
Kazakhstan - Shaidorov
Lithuania - Reed/Ambrulevicius
Russia - Petrosian
Spain - Smart/Dieck

Seems like the organizers did a pretty good job of spreading the wealth with the gala invites, regardless of how the personal fans of ZingKol, Chiba or Gogolev (or name your fave skater) feel their skater/team was slighted.
