Kicking off the national championships season it's the British Championships, in where else but Sheffield.

Livestream - tbc. The last few years it's been on BIS TV (££) but they've recently been streaming more events on their YouTube channel.

This year we're back at Basic Novice to Senior, but no Intermediate Novice singles for reasons unknown to me. No Basic Novice Dance because no teams competed in the qualifying competitions.

Henry Privett-Mendoza withdrew from the senior men’s competition today.

Last year’s silver medalist (and tween backflip girl) Eloisa Merino-Sola withdrew from advanced novice girls. Mollie Chaddock from Stirling is a last minute sub.

There have been several withdrawals from Dundee over the last few days (Arabella Sear-Watkins and Ritchie/McLeod at the weekend, now Eloisa). What unfortunate timing if there’s a bug going round there this week.

Today’s withdrawal: defending champion Jedidiah Lincoln is out of the junior men’s event. Possibly still suffering from his injury at JGP Wuxi.

In more positive news, competition in the novice events started today. The two boys in Basic Novice (Liam Crosby and Ben Crockett) were separated by 0.01!

A few thoughts from days two and three:

If I’m recommending one skater to watch from the events so far it would be AdvNov boys champion Julian Mullin. A really sensitive skater, lovely expression, musicality, strong skating skills, great extension. I wouldn’t have thought Madame Butterfly was a good fit for a young teen boy but his SP was fantastic. (Only jumping doubles though, unfortunately.)

Whitley Bay needs to hire an ice dance coach! Layla Reay and Tim Xie had the highest tech scores in the two AdvNov events but ended up fourth and second after (not unjustly) getting dinged on the tech scores. Only one triple landed in novice girls (Reay) but at least a few more with 2 axel - including the champion this year.

Isla Forsyth, who came sixth, had choreography by Lewis Gibson. The programme was a bit cutesy (maybe The Railway Children - a soundtrack with steam train noises) but sweet and age appropriate for a young novice. I think Isla and Lewis MacDonald, who won bronze in the boys event, are cousins, and they’re both also related to Suzanne Otterson (one of their mothers?) who competed in Albertville.

The technical level in the junior women’s event wasn’t great by international standards but a big improvement on this competition in recent years. 8 skaters with at least one triple and most of the field with more than just a theoretical 2 axel.

I think Leilah Patten has loads of potential, a really well rounded skater. She’s still tiny but her jumps have a nice spring so hopefully that will help her to keep them as she grows. Her SP was excellent but she ran out of gas about halfway through her FS, really slowed and popped her last three jumping passes. The deserved champion, but I’d have had her close to, or maybe slightly behind Vorobeva in the FS. The only not so promising thing is that since her JGP she appears to have moved to Amodio’s group (some bad Amodio programmes in this event!)

Nice to see Vorobeva have a decent competition here, and hopefully the result will give her some confidence going forward. She still looked frustrated that she isn’t able to deliver in competition as is does in practice.

Alice Smith was very obviously under rotating nearly all her jumps. She’s scored nearly 100 with this FS internationally, so maybe she was just having a bad event. Also some work to do on the PCS. She seems all business in her approach to skating, but maybe some lighter music choices would help.

I was also pleased to see Kira Khomenko do well after her disaster in novices last year. John Hamer was at the boards for her this week.

Gates/Vayo had a much cleaner skate in the FD than at the August Qualifier and won that section but finished with the silver medal behind Eve Dexter and Maxime Fouquet. Both teams seemed quite cautious in the FD - understandably when the scores were so close. I didn’t recognise G/V’s music, but it had a spy kids vibe. Lloyd Jones put them on the ice; I guess Matt Gates was in Türkiye with DelCamp/Akalin.

Dexter/Fouquet had a cute programme to a BeeGees medley (yes, more disco :lol:

). Messy twizzles but nice quality on the choreo moves. They are an unusual dance team because she is taller, but I think he’s grown a bit since August and the height gap is down to an inch or so.
