Mao Shimada completes the three straight wins in Japan Juniors.
This feat was accomplished by only two skaters in the past;
Shizuka Arakawa in 1996
Miki Ando in 2003.
Silver was won by Ikura Kushida and Bronze, by Rena Uezono.
I wish that Ami Nakai will quickly recover from her injury.

Mao Interview
She was worried today since she did so badly in the SP.
She really wanted to nail both 3A and 4T, since she was playing catch up.
She now has a "feel" for 3A, but not yet for 4T.
In practice she aims to land at least one of the two big jumps, since falling on both will not make her competitive with other skaters.
Last season Mao was really nervous at Senior Nats, however since this time it is going to be her second time she should be less nervous and hopes to finish higher than last year's third.

I hope she can rest up and heal fully.After reviewing BS Fuji coverage, they included a short clip of Ami Nakai landing clean 3A and coming off the ice beaming. Since she was wearing her Free costume and there were other skaters in the background, so I presume this clip was from 6min warm-up prior to her FP.
Perhaps, her injury is not as severe as one is led to expect.

JSF decided NOT to invite Ami Nakai nor Mayuko Oka to the Senior Nationals.
Seven skaters invited to compete at Senior Nationals are;
Mao Shimada, Ikura Kushida, Rena Uezono, Yo Takagi, Ayumi Shibayama, Haruna Murakami and Kinayu Yokoi.
Although JSF announced top 8 will be considered for the invite, Riria Kono (7th) as Novice was expected not to be invited. Since Mao Shimada was seeded due to her bronze at Senior Nationals, some fans were expecting 9th Mayuko Oka and 10th Ami Nakai would be invited, but JSF declined to do so.

It is rather worrying that neither Rino Matsuike nor Mana Kawabe skated all that well, even in no pressure competition like this. ETA: Chukyo University did win the Women. Evidently, this is important to maintain scholarship status.

Japan Inter-high school championships will be held this weekend.
The competition is singles only and "Junior" rules will be applied for this event.
There are 34 (after two WD, one of them Tsudoi Sudo) Men skaters and 107! Women skaters taking part.
For Women, three SP groups (A on Jan 18, B on Jan 19 and C on Jan 20) of 35-36 skaters each will take place and top 18 skaters will advance to Free Program on January 21st.
Notable skaters in each SP group are;
SP Group A Yurina Okuno
SP Group B Ikura Kushida, Mone Chiba
SP Group C Yo Takagi, Hana Yoshida, Ayumi Shibayama
It is interesting that Mone and Hana who competed as Seniors exclusively this season, are actually skating Junior programs in this event. Evidently, this event is "big deal" to skaters in high school.
It is noted that both Mao Shimada and Rena Uezono are still in Junior High, so they will compete in Inter Junior High event to be held later.

Generally, high school skaters heading to Senior events (Hana, Mone and Kao) skated decently, but Ikura and Shunsuke heading to Junior Worlds did not skate well in the Free programs, unfortunately.

It is now old news, but National Winter Sports Champioships (Each prefecture fields a team) was held in Tomakomai, hokkaido on 27-31 January.
Evidently, the national budget allocation to each prefecture depends on how well they do in this competition, so each prefecture wants the best skaters to compete for them. This was why Hyogo prefecture womens team, last season,were composed of the World Champion and GPF/4CC Champion, Kaori and Mai. This year only Kaori competed, since 4CC and Youth Olympics representatives were not here.
