2021 Russian junior and senior test skates

Trankov: so how was it in Chelyabinks?
Scherbakova: I was very comfortable on the ice, I felt the energy from the audience which we lacked the whole off season and we did not feel last year, it was really nice how we were received both during the warm up and the skate. I tried to project the programme as much as I could. It was the first time so it was important.
Mamun: the programme was great. I know you were injured in Novogorsk.
Scherbakova: we spend every summer in Novogorsk and unfortunatelly I had to miss this year - the preparations were shifted to later, we started workgin on the programme back in Khrustalny and we were trying to get to a point when I can show the programmes now.
Mamun: it's a new character for you
Scherbakova: I like trying new things and when I was offered to listen to the music I loved it, I love the programmes, I know I have to work on a lot, but I try with every skate and every practice in every movement work a little bit more and put more.
Trankov: You were a national champion. For me it's probably the hardest competition of the year. Now you are a world champion. What have changed?
Scherbakova: nothing. It was left in the last season. I was indeed thrilled....
and the feed died

Mamun: in gymnastics we are getting to you in the judging system and this season which just ended they removed the cards (I assume its the planned elements list?), which we used to have just like you do. am curious do you have some back up plans with the coach if something does not work
Scherbakova: Of course, during the practices we work on that. We all know the rules and we know what we can change in the programme. Not only we try the other variants during the practices but we change it so during the competition it's not problem to change things a bit and put a jump in a different place.
Mamun: are you more into the math or humanities?
Scherbakova: not math!
Mamun: some calculate how much do you need to well, win
Scherbakova: your body knows what you need to do. It happened that during the competition I missed the jump and in the Worlds I had to put the combo as the last jump. It was on autopilot when you work on that during the practices you don't need to think during the competitions
Trankov: you did the USA and China GPs, you wanted to repeat it this season, but you'll get Italy instead
Scherbakova: Yes, it's harder this season because of the соvid restrictions. I was really upset with the Chinese GP being moved because I really wanted to compete there - last time I competed there I loved it and I wanted to repeat the experience, but well, it was moved to Italy. So I will compete in Italy and will do my best there.

I wonder how many more she'll get if she makes the Olympic team?

The child needs to go to vet school when she's finished with skating. I know she's said she wants to start a dog rescue.

Mamun: I can't miss asking about your hair colour. It suits you so well.
Trusova: I changed it, I wanted to be red head. Why is my chair spinning?
Trankov: do you really want to know why is your chair spinning?
Trusova: I always wanted to be a red head - my brother is redhead and my dogs are red. So I wanted to match them
Mamun: Have you brought any of your dogs here?
Trusova: Yes, one of the dogs - the last one - her name is Cruella.
Trankov: and Cruella is so cute, I don't know who is cuter when I see them together - Sasha and Cruella
Mamun: the SP is so gorgeous, are you projecting it through yourself?
Trusova: it's my first programme of the kind. I watched the movie, I try to show the emotions, I try to digest them and show all that I saw in the movie.
Trankov: figure skating is a sport or an art
Trusova: I think first the sport and then the art.
Trankov: and for your Margarita?
Mamun: We show the audience it's an art, but it's a sport.
Trankov: what will you be surprising us with tomorrow?
Trusova: I never tell in advance how many quads am attempting, but think my practices are already online and everyone knows.
Mamun: you are watcihng all the practices. What surprises you the most in Trusova?
Trankov: she is an incredible workaholic. I think except for my wife she is the only one who the coaches are asking to stop and not to work more. This is what I love about Sasha and I always root for Sasha, she has that demon inside her that makes her jump and spin all the time. I get dizzy just watchign her
Mamun: where is your energy coming from?
Trusova: I don't know. What I do on the competitions the more I do it in the practices the higher the odds I'll do it clean in the competitions. Once I finish learning the new things there is nothing else to do so I just keep jumping.
Mamun: what do you eat to have so much energy? I know it's not about what you eat for breakfast, but about people wanting to be like you - having so much power and energy

I think she already did.

Mamun: Camila, you are gorgeous, the programme was incredible.
Trankov: I didn't know what to ask Camila because I was swallowing my tears and when Gleikhengauze walked near I told him to go and ask questions himself after breaking peoples' hearts.
Mamun: you were in gymnastics, why are you not there?
Valieva: I did gymnastics, ballet, dance and figure skating and mom told me to pick one. I liked figure skating best, so I picked that.
Mamun: it shows that you are a gymnast a skater and a ballet dancer. You show that ideal shape. Does your flexibility bother you? Is it an advantage?
Valieva: I think for me it is. I can jump and spin, I think I can pick up my legs after, so guess it's an advantage.
Trankov: you know what else is similar. Your favourite men are called `Lev' - Margarita's son and Camila's dog.
Mamun: you have such long arms and legs. It's so hard to control such long limbs. Richter music - is it the fashion this year?
Trankov: and then there is a pair who uses that music
Mamun: how did you choose that music. Tell us about the programme.
Valieva: I walk into the garden and a batterfly sits on my arm, and I follow her like a dream and at the end I set her free because I reached my dream
Trankov: What is your dream outside the ice.
Valieva: a secret
Trankov: which secret already come true?
Valieva: to move to the seniors.
Mamun: tell us about the LP. And Maks have probably seen it
Trankov: No, with the light, the dress it's all different.
Mamun: true, when you watch on the TV it looks so different.
Trankov: do you miss the audience the full rinks?
Valieva: Of course, you go out and you see how the audience supports you and you feel so calm. Sometimes it's a bit scary that there are so many people but then you take a breath and you get so calm. I love the audience.
Trankov; we will let you go - you are still wearing the skates.
Mamun: do you get tired in the boots?
Valieva: during the practices not at all.

Can't argue with Valieva's performance here. But hate the dress and the program is not a patch on the genius of her junior short. Just bring that back. No one outside the ubers and russians saw that. It would make an incredible impact at the Olympics.

Tuk - can't remember actually enjoying a Tuk program as much as this in years. Usually I admire her guts for skating against these kids aged 89, but handography and mumu's just don't cut it. This felt sooo different. So mature, so womanly, so refreshing i suppose compared to what we usually see!

Trusova - I like this vehicle for her and I can see what they are trying to achieve. Once she lands that axel she will fly. Given her technical arsenal you just can't dismiss her. Looking forward to Cruella.

Shcherbakova - I found it pretty bland. Hopefully with more training time she can catch up.

Kostornaia - this ain't it. Awful program, the triple axel was nowhere near but, she tried it. I just don't see her in the picture for Beijing at this point.

Tuk did the 3A but only a 2T on her combo. Her spins are improving but still not amazing. She leaves so many points on the table!

ITA about Valieva's junior SP. That was one of the most brilliant programs ever. I get why they want to do something different for the Olympic season, but the program is that much better. I'm guessing they'll wait and see how she scores, but Eteri wants another OGM skater and she'll change programs if she feels the need, just like she's done with Tar/Mor's SP

I really liked Kondratiuk, as usual. In a world of Russian singles skaters that seem to be going from element to element on autopilot (kinda like the gymnasts on balance beam with all of those arm movements that aren't really adding up to anything), he adds that little extra something and an oomph to all of his movements. It simply can't be taught- he has it. Liked Aliev too but it's not next-level like I see in Mark. I fear that I'll be expecting White Crow-level material from everything Kolyada does and the short is nice, but I think we all know he is capable of another masterpiece.

Tuktamysheva is obviously a sentimental favorite of mine, but I wasn't as wowed by the short as it seems some of you were. It's a mature program, but the story behind the skating remains the same. Valieva was nice, but I also think she should carry Eric Radford's piece into this season. Maybe she's mad at him for going behind Duhamel's back, too. ;) Trusova was alright, but I noticed she was really pitched forward on her jumps. Not a huge fan of Shcherbakova's program, and really don't like Kostornaia's program. She's better than that, but I would think that's the direction she wanted to go.

Boikova/Kozlovskii have a winner in the SP. I really hope the LP is changed though, because it's a bunch of nothing. Mishina/Galiamov continue to up their performance level, and I don't mind that they kept the program. Tarasova/Morozov got a lot of criticism for switching their 'best program ever' before anyone ever saw this, and I have to say that I like this one better! There's a lot of precise movement and intensity that we don't really see from them. A nice combination between the SP + LP, and we fans can continue to rejoice that they have two great Olympic-season programs.

The idea is of the Pygmalion and Galathea - Evgenia is a dead satutue first and then I wake up and then there is a love story and then by the end she goes back to the starting pose.

Classic Team Eteri. Strike a pose, skate skate skate, strike another pose, then get off the ice and tell the interviewers what the story was supposed to be.

Nice program and performance from Khromykh. If she can be consistent, she could make things interesting.

Nugu: such a joy to watch, even when the technical isn't all there.

Usacheva: Difficult connections between elements, wish her jumps had any ride-out. Very consistent so she could maybe she can get a Worlds spot if some of the Olympic team declines

Samodurova: doesn't really fit in this field anymore, the curse of turning Sr eligible the year after an Olympics

Sinitsyna: What a breath of fresh air her choreography is, nice glide and flow and the program breathes. :)

Shcherbakova: Steely competitiveness continues

Kostornaia: I haven't been a fan of any of her SR music selections. Too bad that continues here. :( Nice speed

Trusova: almost unrecognizable, SO MUCH RED. 3A attempt, but didn't look close. Not feeling this program.

Tuktamysheva: Nice mood piece and good 3A, usual strengths and weaknesses, though I'd say this program is stronger in showcasing her maturity

Valieva: that's a lot of skirt, some visually unique moments, like her basics, like her height on the jumps, just wonderful

Not a fan of Kostornaia’s short program. Her basic skating is still so strong but if you skate to that kind of music you really have to commit to it and it’s just the typical Dani G choreography to third rate blues music. Not a huge fan of any of the programs but Trusova I found most enjoyable. Elizaveta’s program would be ok if someone else was skating. I just can’t with her lack of skating skills.

Didn’t enjoy Valieva’s program but she’s a quality skater. I think she’d make for a fine Olympic champion but it’s too bad she’s stuck with uninspired choreography.

And Trusova nailed 10/10 3As in practice. Missing it here is no big deal except for the fact she's a perfectionist. She just has to channel some of Anna's competition mind set.

Kostornaia looks amazing, although I did watch it without sound so maybe that's why it looks different to me?

IMHO they are right to keep a brilliant programme they only skated like what? twice? the CoR and Worlds?
Eight times. M&G did eight competitions last year and the test skates. So many fans would be sick of it.

Hey guys trying to catch up on everything here. Is there a link to the scores?

Ohhhhhhhhh La Tuk in Crimson red and not black as per usual. I'm loving it so far

Outside of Russia, FSU, and the Twitter brigade who probably hated it every single time simply because they are Russian, I'd think most fans probably don't remember that much about it and/or really enjoyed what they did see of it at Worlds and don't mind it being repeated. It's an Olympic season, plenty of people will pop their heads in by the time Beijing comes around.
