2021/2022 Canadian Ice Dance: News and Updates

I enjoyed G/P's programs previously like the Hitchcock one but I totally fell in love with them from the first time I saw "Vincent". In fact, I got excellent seats at CSOI and also went to the M&G specifically to see them. They were darling and seemed so thrilled to be there. I didn't immediately click with "Both Sides Now" but really felt they had the "moment" at the last Worlds with that program. I am enjoying "L&WR" more and more and believe it can be just as touching by the Olympics.

A nice retrospective piece on the career of Gilles/Poirier published today on the CBC website: Battle-hardened duo of Gilles-Poirier ready for their moment in Beijing

"Ice dancing is such a subjective discipline, even more so than all the other skating disciplines," Lane said. "I think they went through a period of being very outcome oriented and then they stopped doing that. When they stopped doing that and just started to think about being themselves, it became instead focused on producing the work the way that they wanted it to be."

Well if G/P do retire, 2nd and 3rd are more than ready to keep Canadian ice dance alive and well.

No medal for S/F. It must hurt to come that close and be fourth again. :( On the bright side, they again held off their closest Canadian competitors here.

I believe Piper and Paul have made it pretty clear that they're done, so next season Carolane and Shane should be Carol Lane's top team. I hope they get some strong material and make a real push to move higher. I think being mistake-prone for so long has hurt their reputation and held them down, so if they can get some clean performances under their belts, that should help a lot.

I was looking at Skate Canada's instagram and saw they had some 'get to know' for the national champions. Apparently Piper was on The Price is Right. Can't seem to find any video of it, though.

Re-posting here :):
Speaking of, Piper's Instagram stories mentioned that they have their own Stories sticker for the games, sponsored by Cheerios.
Gilles/Poirier are featured in Ice-Dance.com's "Dispatches from Beijing" series (Feb. 2):
Danielle Earl posted 8 photos from G/P's Feb. 1st practice on her IG account: https://www.instagram.com/p/CZbHHFTLeui/

Press release today (Feb. 3):
Skate Canada will have one entry for a total of two skaters competing at the 2022 Egna Dance Trophy. This event takes place from February 4 to 6, 2022, in Egna, Italy. The 2022 Egna Dance Trophy is part of the team’s preparations for the upcoming ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships® 2022, in Sofia, Bulgaria, from March 7 to 13, 2022.

I just saw Piper and Paul's costume for the Rhythm Dance and I LOVE it.
I would love to buy something like to wear out dancing or for Halloween!

I don't think many people expected G/P to be 4th after the RD. I'm sure they will be closely examining the protocols before the individual event. Coming in as bronze medal hopefuls, and being 4th when a few of the top teams weren't even taking part? Yikes.

In the team event rankings, both Canada and Georgia currently have 10 points (a 7 and a 3 for both) yet Georgia is listed as ranked 6th and Canada 7th. What is the criteria for breaking a tie in points?

First tie breaker is to drop the lowest score - right now that doesn't really apply - so I'm going with Georgia was ahead of Canada before the ice dance as the best explanation.

Fairly certain I read in the rules a long time ago (probably 2018 Olympics) that if it's a tie in overall team points, it's based on the total segment scores of the two best disciplines since they have identical 3 & 7 points. Georgia has 156.97, and Canada has 153.78.

Piper and Paul were robbed
The Italians did not deserve IMO to beat them

But I HATE the dress.

Bring back the jumpsuit please,
