Out on a digital detox in the western US backcountry, scientist Fred Ramsdell was startled when his wife let out a yell. He feared she had spotted a grizzly bear, only to discover a far better surprise – he had won the Nobel prize in medicine.

ETA- I just found out that Dr. Omar Yaghi was an Assistant Professor at Arizona State University from 1993-1998. I am so proud of him!

I didn’t study at that university but I taught a couple of Engineering courses there for one semester, as Adjunct faculty member.

I’ve seen Machado on TV and she seems impressive. God knows Venezuela deserves better than its crazed repressive regime.

I feel Schadenfreude to Trump for the Peace prize.

Same. And then I see something like this:

"The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace," White House communications director Steven Cheung said after the announcement on Friday morning.

"President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives," Cheung wrote on X. "He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will."

"Trump" and "humanitarian" should never, ever be placed in the same sentence, except with the modifier "will never be a" in between them.

I guess the White House staff are continuing to demonstrate their inability to read and comprehend, since the 2025 Nobel prizes are for work done in 2024 or earlier…
