Russian figure skating news in 2024

I agree, that held my interest. They are turning into quite a good team. I liked them with past partners and am glad they have each other.

BTW who was the older blonde woman at the beginning at the boards with them? My head wanted to turn her into Tchaikovskaya, but there just is no way, right?
looks like Tchaikovskaya

Agreed. That was wonderful, leagues better than anything Step/Buk ever did.
It just sucks that not only were KagNec and other ice dance/pairs victims of international politics but also the politics of their fed. Probably this has been discussed ad nauseam but seeing these beautiful programs raises the question up again. If the fed cared so much about international competition they would have proposed the pairs with the best chance of meeting the criteria.

Just one day this interminable discussion will end and I'll hopefully never need to say "let's ban America and revoke every medal they won since 2003" to exactly the same person ever again.

I find they put far too much attention on Diva Vasilisa. There needs to be a balance. They don't really engage Maxim's strengths, and their programs are much too cluttered. In three years, tops, these two will be going to Zhulin.

You don't need to say it now. :)

:drama: Rachmaninov is my homeboy! He's my favorite, along with Prokofiev, but also props to Stravinsky and Shostakovich for being weirdos.
Despite my username, Prokofiev is my favourite composer. I took 2 russian language classes in university as part of my B.Mus because of my love of Russian music lol

Is the junior ice dancer Varvara Slutskaya Irina's daughter? Her patronymic is Sergeevna, and I remember that Irina's first husband was named Sergei. I know that Petrova/Tikhonov's daughter is also an ice dancer, and she looks like a total 50/50 face morph of her parents so it was a lot more obvious than in Varvara's case.

If she is, then this week in the Russian fake Grand Prix is full of nepo babies. Berezhnaya's daughter is also competing in the pair event.

Women, short program

1. Adelia Petrosyan - 75.89

2. Anna Frolova - 72.74

3. Ksenia Gushchina - 70.60

Talk about commitment to a theme: Roman Savosin's FS is a Queen medley complete with Freddy Mercury's iconic yellow jacket, pants and stash. Especially the stash. And, he totally commits to the program in the step sequence. The crowd was wild. Pity he had two jump errors, but he should still make nationals.

And Moskvina has a young skater Ugozhaev who is a future star along with Federov (Sokolavskaia's group). Ugozhaev is going to be tall like Gummenik, but he has such a natural elegance on the ice. His jumps are actually very good, but he's a bit of a nervy skater who just needs more experience as a senior. But, after years in Russia with the focus on the women, the Russian men are the exciting group to watch.

The Ru Fed started posting on YouTube again. That makes things easier because I don't care enough to use a VPN to go to the Channel One website lol

Here's Roman Savosin's Queen program, he did a pretty good job as a Freddie Mercury impersonator.

Yes, it’s Slutskaya’s daughter

It’s handy that they also have English translation in the sub titles, I had a Quick Look to compare with our Grand Prix. Not a big difference really. Nice to see Anna Frolova I think she is IMHO the only comparable skater to the current top Japanese and Americans, maybe Alina Gorbacheva as well?

Adelia still juniorish to me and unless she is able to rack up the points with clean quads in the long I doubt she will be on the podium at the Olympics. Does seem to be less of a gap now with the pairs so not missing the pairs as much (me). I do like Petra Gumannik in the men, he has a nice combination of artistry and technique.

Adeliia’s right foot doesn’t seem 100% healed. Wonky landings. She’s lucky (well, not really because she is on home turf) because she loop and flip in her combo should have been at least <.

Above all, I wish her to be healthy. They seem to push her ++ and I am not sure it is the right way to go. I am pretty sure she would more competitive if she could just be 100% healthy.

My understanding is that the injury is healed and they are doing early events to give her time to work the two quads and 3A back into her programs. There's a lot at stake and she and her team know this.

Boi/Koz compete next week (I think--or the week after) and I'm curious if they are going to go for the quad twist. They did it in the test skates. This week's pair event had a good SP and not so good FS for all the skaters. They've reduced the GP events to 5 and only 4 have pair events so the field is really going to be competitive for the nationals spots.
