2025–26 Canadian Pairs: News and Updates

They're not a new team. They competed at Japanese Nationals last year, but never competed internationally. Interesting, though, that they made the decision to switch to Canada.
Getting Japanese citizenship is near impossible so that might explain the switch. Maybe.

Another excellent JGP for Canadian pairs. Kemp/Elizarov with their second win in 2 weeks and a new set of PBs become the first JGPF qualifiers. Quattrochi/Lacasse in their first international and after only a few months together won bronze, and Dion/Côté, just up from novice, finished 6th in the free skate and 9th overall, getting JW minimums.

I enjoyed Quattrochi/Lacasse and think they have potential. I'm thinking i should practice spelling Quattrochi for the future - heres hoping!

But, like actually what could it be? I’m guessing a new lift position maybe?

Although she seemed pretty seething mad about their 4th ranking pairs spin so wouldn’t surprise me if they have some weird spin they are about to unveil

Me too! For a brand new team they looked good.
You should work on that - by the way it's Quattrocchi - two 'c's. ;) I have the advantage of living in a town with a business with that last name so I was familiar with it before I saw them skate.

Realistically I’m thinking it’s either something different with the death spiral or the pairs spin. They’ve been doing that ugly position in the DS during the free to try & gain points, so I could see them trying something different there. And as mentioned above, she seemed upset about their scores on the pairs spin, so I guess they could try something different there?

I don’t love it? It feels a bit beneath this team. I think a well executed backflip at full speed can have a place as an actual highlight and choreographic moment. But it’s few and far between when those two things come together and this has neither. The full stop and the clunky landing are not it. Why get an expensive Lori program and then cheapen it?

I would love to be a fly on the wall to hear the feedback they get on this from judges.

So they have another surprise besides the backflip 😅

The fan cam from today shows me a program that will likely work well for them in a couple more months. I still don’t think we need the backflip, but I guess if they could do it with a faster entry and a smoother landing maybe it would be an effective piece to the footwork. But it’s really not needed.

Weird 3T non attempt aside, they look pretty strong right now. The twist was especially snappy today I thought.

Bev Smith Writes on Deanna & Max:
"They were brave to tackle the forward outside death spiral in recent years – a move hardly anybody had ever done. But now, yes, it’s been copied."

Good article but I think the suggestion that other pairs "copied" the forward outside death spiral from Deanna/Max is a bit misleading. Other pairs actually introduced this element somewhat concurrently with Deanna/Max; Pavliuchenko/Khodykin did it in 2019, Sui/Han did it at the 2022 Olympics, Alisa Efimova did it with Blommaert at 2023 Worlds.

The difference that Deanna/Max brought to it, in the 2022-23 season, was the addition of a forward pivot, instead of the standard back pivot (as discussed in this 2022 interview). That "double forward" outside death spiral was indeed unique to Deanna/Max. I don't think they have performed the "double forward" since 2022-23, as far as I can recall.

Didn’t the Protopopov’s invent the forward outside death spiral? There have been others over the years as well that have done it. Shen/Zhao did one in 2000 (and maybe other times, but that’s the one I remember). I think every one of them ever done has been ugly :shuffle:. But yeah, they certainly didn’t invent it or even popularize it.

Didn't the Protopopovs originate the forward outside death spiral way back in the 60s?
