USFS’s rules are complicated to allow them to choose whomever they want. I’m sure they’re aware of that fundamental point. The minutiae of the rules are to CYA, not to (necessarily) guide their selections.

I don't usually take the cynical view in life automatically as so many do, but I completely agree with this.

I've made a few updates to the Selection Pool Calculation Table while working with SkatingScores.com to refine their leaderboard.

It was brought to SkatingScores' attention that when a skater/team does not have any Challenger/Int'l Competition assignments then the average of the GP/JGP score is multiplied by 80% and used for the CS/IC Highest Score & Avg Score fields. The selection document is bit unclear if the reverse is true - when a skater/team doesn't have a GP/JGP assignment then is the CS/IC average score multiplied by 80% and used for the GP/JGP Highest Score & Avg Score field?

There's also the lingering question of whether or not the Senior B competitions were fully USFS-funded or not. Diving into the very fine print of the 2025-26 ISU Championships Selection Procedure, I noticed that the non-USFS funded events are NOT included in the calculation formula this season.

We know that LPIDI is never USFS funded and that none of the junior internationals were USFS-funded. That leaves the question of whether or not the senior skaters assigned to Robin Cousins Cup, Bolero Cup, Tayside Trophy, Mezzaluna Cup, Ice Challenge Graz, Santa Claus Cup or Warsaw Cup Pairs were funded. If anyone knows the answer to this, the info would be greatly appreciated as it impacts the Selection Pool Calculation Table.

Okay, so, here we are at the end of the fall season with just Nationals to add into the USFS' Selection Pool Calculation data. As a reminder - there are 5 ways to qualify for the Selection Pool -

1) Top 5 from the Selection Pool Calculation Table
2) Top 5 from 2026 US Nationals
3) Top 10 from 2025 Worlds
4) Olympic Medalist Individual Event
5) Top 24 CURRENT season Sr World Rankings

I'll make separate posts for each discipline showing who is currently qualified for the 2026 Olympic Team Selection Pool as well as the current standings of the Selection Pool Calculation Table.

ETA - I've added in the points that skaters who competed at Golden Spin will receive to the current season WRs since those points haven't been added yet to the ISU's official standings.

When it comes to the top 5 in the selection table, do we know if it's the top 5 eligible or the top 5 overall?

The Selection document explicitly states this about the Calculation Table:

A. The top five (5) athletes/teams based on the “Calculation of Overall Athlete Performance Data” will be added to the pool. This data will use a factoring calculation of the scores achieved at the events listed and outlined in Appendix B.

The deadline for the CTES mins is Jan 26th, so there would be time for any skater/team who finds themselves in the Selection Pool to earn the CTES mins at Challenge Cup in the Netherlands (being held Jan 22-25, 2026).

There is no caveat in the rest of the Selection document for the other 4 ways to qualify for the Selection Pool about citizenship -

In addition to the Calculation of Overall Athlete Performance Data (Appendix B), the top five(5) athletes/teams at the 2026 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, top ten (10) at the immediately preceding World Championships, any athlete that has medaled at a previous Olympic Games in their discipline only, and any athlete/team in the current season’s Top 24in World Rankings will be placed into the pool, if eligible based on age and skating level, regardless of whether they meet the requirements in Section 6.2.2 (A).

Additional athletes/teams may be added to the pool by the respective Selection Committee based on the discretionary selection criteria outlined in Section 7. An athlete/team will be added to the pool if approved by a 2/3 majority of the respective Selection Committee (see Section 7.3).

Theoretically, the Int'l Committee could expand the Selection Pool by including additional skaters/teams, but I'd guess that the only way they do that is if they don't have at least 6 skaters/teams with citizenship & CTES mins in the pool by the end of Nats.

I don’t really expect the people they choose to come from the bottom of the selection calculation, so I doubt they’d expand it. Unless someone they wanted to consider would be left out of the pool without it.

The only reason I say 6 (maybe 5 in pairs unless we do pick up that 3rd spot somehow) is in order to name the 3 team members & 3 alternates. There isn't a need to expand the pool for ice dance or women since there are 7 teams & 6 women already in those selection pools, but I could see adding at least 1-2 men or pairs teams just to be able to name a full team & alternates.
