Nepela Memorial - Women's SP & FS

I watched Ava’s short program for a second time I have to say it’s quite interesting and quite good. I really like her skating.

Having watch that combination spin two times now what was wrong with it that made invalid? I can’t tell.

I love her short program, too.

On the combo spin, the camel was really out of control and never hit anything close to a center. I’m guessing she didn’t have enough rotations (minimum three) to count on the forward part of the spin? I’m guessing none of the camel revolutions counted, and only two of the sit spin revolutions were deemed to be in position.

Quite a nice skate for Anna, but what was that hideous music? It sounded like Susan Alexander trying to sing for Charles Foster Kane.

And with these two performances, I think Elyce Lin-Gracey’s Olympic bid is all but over. With three US women in the top five in the world, you can’t score 101 in the free skate and 154 overall even once and expect to be in consideration.

At this point, I’d say Sarah Everhardt is the only potential spoiler barring injury to the existing top three.

That was my thought yesterday after the SP.

Eek, rough skate from Ziegler. 84 total free skate score :yikes:. I had a feeling this might happen. She doesn’t look back to full strength yet. She did well to get through the short program, spin aside.
I agree this wasn't unexpected, but I'm pleased she had a good short. I'm holding out hope that she improves as the season continues and think she has a shot a 4C assignment.

Skate Canada is lauding Sara-Maude for making history with the first 3A landed by a CDN woman in international competition. It is shown as 3A on the protocols but there was negative GOE.
Bev Smith (and some others) are arguing on X that it wasn't a "landed jump" if there was negative GOE. If that's the case, there are an awful lot of jumps that are not "landed"!!!!

The standard in the past has always been landing a jump on one foot cleanly with no touch of the free foot. Stepping out of a jump has never counted. If it does, Kurt Browning should relinquish his “first quad” title to Jozef Sabovcik :slinkaway whose quad was much cleaner than Dupuis’s triple axel. There are probably other firsts that need to be recalculated if all one needs to do is rotate and stay upright.

Yeah, I think Skate Canada was just giddy on talking about it but it shouldn't really count as 'landed'. But anyways, she can do it and I hope she lands it leading into Nationals.

I remember Angela Derochie out of seemingly nowhere tried a 3A in the short program in the Grand Prix in 1998 and the snap was beautiful but she fell on it and it seemed most judges didn't even realize it was a 3A attempt.

Way back in the day, Canadian lady Lisa Sargeant attempted a triple axel in the short, too. I want to say it was 1989 or 1990? I believe Sargeant stood up the triple axel at least once and would deserve credit (30+ years in hindsight) as the first under this revised standard.

Josee Chouinard landed some beautiful triple axels in practice, but never attempted one. I remember she was at one point thinking about attempting one as a pro.

Some archived materials in Skating Magazine and the Skate Guard Blog indicate Lisa Sargeant-Driscoll landed a flawed triple axel at 1993 Canadians:

So, who's going to go tag Skate Canada in their social media posts about Sara Maude's 3A and point out hers isn't the first attempt by a Canadian lady that was stood up? ;)

International competition

Their post said "in international competition" :)

So Anna's got a Swan Lake program. And like Kaetlyn Osmond before her, she's a better swan than I would have expected. Her presentation has matured so much.
