Love, Balls and Courting: Tennis V

Lorenzo 😭 but I think he was not really physically ready. Still struggling with his injury from Roland-Garros. Sad to see Denis out too. But a good win for Victoria Mboko over 25th-seeded Magdalena Frech, on Canada Day no less 🇨🇦

You'd think tennis players are accustomed to the heat. I can't imagine it's hotter in Wimbledon than it gets in Melbourne for the Australian Open.
I don't think it was the heat as much as the surface, and some injury issues that were the cause of the upsets - many of the players who lost, Gauff, and Zverev, for example, are not strong grass-court players.

Well... players expect extreme heat in Melbourne. Not so much in London. It just seems like there have been a rash of early upsets this year, so I was speculating that at least some of it might be due to the heat.

Mboko and Felix Auger-Aliassime both lost today. No Canadians left in the singles draw for either the men or the women. Of course, my favorite Canadian is Denis so yes, I was pretty sad to see him out in the first round.

Maybe? But day 3 was not as warm with a lot of upsets too. Today was 26C/79F which is kinda perfect.

Today was a bit brutal for both the Brits and Americans in the tourney. (((Draper fans)))

Not a fan, but Swiatek looks so impressive considering she doesn't like grass. I expect a final between her and Sabalenka, who had her hands full with a great match with Mertens today.

Norrie keeping Brit hopes alive with his win today.

Currently watching this Rublev/Alcaraz match which is a lot more topsy curvy than I expected. 🍿

Alcaraz makes himself vulnerable w/ these "brain farts" of his! He was serving for the set in the TB, up 5-4 & allowed Rublev to steal the 1st set! Norrie, Khachanov, & Fritz all made the Quarters of Wimbledon! :40beers:

Alcaraz had some unusual forehand errors the whole first set. And his serving improved set after set. Meanwhile Rublev's serve percentage diminished as the sets progressed by a lot, but he played well overall.

He was coming from behind the entire 1st set; got broken & was down 1-4! He stormed back only to drop the set in a TB he led! :wall:

Novak Djokovic made it thru to the quarters taking out Alex de Minaur in 4 sets! It was a well played match w/ some nice shotmaking! Mirra Andreeva got past Emma Navarro in straights! Swiatek on the court now, down 1-3 to Tauson! 😱:cautious::wall:

:yikes:Sinner hampered by an elbow injury and down two sets to Dmitrov, who then has to withdraw due to a pectoral muscle injury.

Shelton next in line for Sinner to face.

Sinner dodged a bullet! He was just about "gone!" Being an old guy, I fugure, Grigor cooled off waiting for that roof to close! You get stiff real fast when ancient! :D :wall::40beers::2faced:

Mother of all creatures….

I mean, come on now…………….

Holy sh*t! When I read the Bencic article above, I was hoping for a Bencic/Anisimova final. Halfway there!

Scandalous IMO! Bencic ruined her own story by being trounced in the SF vs Swiatek, 2-6, 0-6! Supposedly she was injured w/ a cracked big toe-nail, but she had it during her victory the day before! If there was any reason to believe she'd perform like this, she should have just allowed Mirra to play Iga today! That was such a selfish move playing "out of her mind" 1 day, then a "crash & burn" the next! It stinks IMO! :cautious: :scream::eek:

That's a little harsh, IMO. Give some credit to Swiatek. She's in pretty awesome form right now.

In other news, it's going to be Sinner-Alcaraz on Sunday. Sinner absolutely destroyed Djokovik today, though Novak says this will not be the last that fans see of him on Center Court at Wimbledon. The Alcaraz-Fritz semi was a lot more competitive, though Carlos was clearly the better player today. Should be another exciting final, providing Sinner's earlier injury doesn't come back to haunt him.

Fritz is one cool customer. Even though he lost, he was fully convinced he could win until the very last point and made the most of almost every opening he had in the match against Alcaraz (there were not many). I would like to have that sort of mental strength.

I fully expect that if any American man is going to win a major in the next couple of years, it will be him. Although Shelton may not be far behind.

I'm shocked we have so complete a rivalry so soon after The Big 3 started stepping down! Only Jannik & Carlos are winning Majors! I doubt they'll get to the heights of Fedalovic stealing every major event, but so far have been quite impressive!

I didn't get to see any of the matches today, but it looks like Novak's second serve stats were really terrible, which obviously gave Sinner many more chances.

I'm surprised but happy Fritz was able to get a set off Alcaraz. He's worked to be more than just a big booming server, and it's slowly paying off.

Let's hope this Sinner/Alcaraz final is as thrilling as their battle at the French Open just six or seven weeks ago. :watch:

Can't help but feel Sinner lucked out a bit with two sets down and then get a walkover from Dmitrov. So I'll be rooting from Carlos though I won't be too upset if Sinner wins (he's a better shotmaker while Carlos is more up and down)
