The71st Miss Universe is happening this week, with finals next Saturday night - Telemundo live TV or, for English, only streamed on Roku.

So the 84 candidates include both Ukraine and Russia??? Yikes.

Since arriving in New Orleans five days ago, Russia is hardly seen. Just a couple of photos so far…only with the current Miss Univ…other contestants avoiding Russia. I think that she should leave.

Missossology FB seems to have the best photos of all:

Adding: In the Puerto Rico forum board, folks asking about Russia. The couple of posted photos are here. None with fellow candidates…just with the current MU:

My faves so far:

COLOMBIA (wow!)
USA
Iceland
Germany
Peru
Venezuela
Thailand
Philippines
and…
Ukraine - will get my fan-vote for 16th semifinalist…and is lovely on her own right.

Happy Monday! Just five days to go before the finals!!! Two days before the prelims!!!

Last night was the Opening Dinner in downtown New Orleans. Even Miss Russia posed with other contestants. Great photos of all here:

FB page of Missosology.com -

I still have Colombia to win, with USA #2. However, PERU jumped up to top 3 yesterday. South Africa joins my top list - tall, spectacular! I’m trying to not hype my Puerto Rico…but she’s beginning to make waves, likely making top 10.

My pre-prelims list:

1. COLOMBIA
2. USA (of Filipino heritage)
3. PERU
4. Germany
5. South Africa

6. Venez
7. Thailand
8. Philippines
9. Puerto Rico
10. India

11. Dominican Rep
12. Vietnam
13. Iceland
14. Bolivia
15. Honduras

Fan Vote #16 - UKRAINE

Who are your faves?

Just one day to go before tomorrow’s Prelims Night. My pre-prelims list is same as above, except for changes in the 14th & 15th places: Curaçao & Cambodia are “on” in place of Bolivia and Honduras, due to their impact at last night’s gala dinner.

I still have Ukraine as the Fan Vote 16th place into the semifinals. Russia is barely seen…was the only one to wear torn jeans to yesterday morning’s press conference by the Mayor of New Orleans, while everyone else dressed in suits or informal gowns. Russia seems spaced out…will she appear in tomorrow night’s Prelims?

PRELIMS TONIGHT from New Orleans, via the Miss Universe Org’s YouTube streaming site.

Stream begins at 7:45pm eastern US…competition at 8pm. All 84 competitors will be seen/marked in Swimsuit and Gown. All had their interviews yesterday. All-female judging panel this year. New owner - IMG sold the event to the famous transvestite executive Anne Jakapong from Thailand! About the switch:

My list of faves remains as above - COLOMBIA to win…PUERTO RICO coming up strongly! Will tonight’s Prelims change our final-fave lists? ?

p.s. For fans who want to stay up late…that’s me!…the National Costumes Competition begins right after the Prelims, at about 10pm eastern. It has its own livestream site:

Ukraine will wear a “Warrior of Light”outfit. Russia a Royal Crown dress.

A LONG NIGHT OF FUN! PREPARE THE POPCORN!!!

Just waking up after a grand Prelims & Costumes night. None of my faves changed…just some of the placements. I’ll stick with COLOMBIA to win and USA 2nd. Moving up PR to top 5 and DR to top 10.

Loudest, craziest audiences: HONDURAS above all but also loud for Colombia, Mexico and Philippines, that I could tell.

My favorites in last night’s three segments:

Swimsuit - PUERTO RICO…sass to the max!

Gown- USA…”Viva Magente”

Costume - COLOMBIA as the Phoenix…when the big wings open.

FINALS SATURDAY NIGHT - tomorrow!

My Final-Final List of the 16 semifinalists…who apparently will all do both the swimsuit and gown segments, as in old days (up to 1990s), then cut to Final Five:

1. COLOMBIA
2. USA
3. PUERTO RICO
4. Philippines
5. Curaçao… the big boom of the Prelims, after spending five days in COVID quarantine

The eleven remaining semis, in my order:

Venezuela
Thailand
South Africa
Germany
Dominican Republic
India
Vietnam
Cambodia
Peru
Iceland
…and Ukraine with the Fan vote!

Lots of other strong candidates …but only 16 spots. For ex, Australia (fitness), Portugal (face), etc.

Faves of other fans but not my choice…but let’s name: Mexico and Brazil. Could make the list!

In US, live finals at 8pm eastern tomorrow:
TV in Spanish: Telemundo
Livestream in English: ROKU

TODAY IS THE DAY when the 71st MU will be crowned with the $6mill sapphire & diamond tiara!

I barely slept last night, following pageant fans’ livestreams of parties/rooting sessions from the New Orleans Hyatt Regency hotel. Fans from all over Latin Am & the Philippines (and Filipina Miss USA) are going full force with their streaming devices. How the world has changed since I began following Miss Universe since the 1960s!

Just one typical film, as contestants returned to the hotel around midnight:

Some crazy fans found the contestants being spirited back into the hotel via a basement passage!

Chit-chat with parents & friends of competitors, waiting around the hotel lobby - including the gorgeous mom of Puerto Rico (at about 4 mins):

QUE VIVA EL UNIVERSO!!!

How/Where to watch tonight’s finals (8-11pm eastern US zone)?

In most countries, people can watch MUO’s livestream via YouTube:

In the US, the English livestream is via the ROKU Channel (no link…find ROKU). The Spanish version will be on TV - TelemundoHD or regular Telemundo. I will watch Telemundo TV here in San Juan. I suspect that other Latin Am locales will also have to go Telemundo.

I also had Cambodia. There’s talk that the new head, Mme Anne, would love the winner to be from a country that has never won - such as Cambodia - and who could be icons for non-trad’l lifestyles…as Cambodia has stated. So maybe we should be focusing on her some more?

Other first-time winners among favorites/semi-faves could be Aruba, Curaçao, Iceland, Italy, Jamaica, Laos, Portugal, Ukraine…

It is asking me to sign up. Wants my credit card number. I am not going to Pay for this. I will read the results here.

ETA- looks like I can watch it on Telemundo. I don't understand Spanish but this should be easy to understand- see the contestants on the screen and watch the announcements of Semifinalists etc.

The problem for me is Telemundo comments are in Spanish even when the contestant speaks English. I don't understand a word!

Last 6

Curacao
India
Venezuela
Spain
USA
Colombia

Mexico :( Philippines out

Well 7 out of my top 10 made it. I think the title wil be between Venezuela, Colombia or USA but anything can happen I think there could be an upset

Top 5

Venezuela
USA
Puerto Rico
Curacao
Dominican Republic

More shocking results: pre-favourites Colombia, Peru, India out of the top 5

Curacao got the hardest question. It's hard when politics are already in the question. Dominican Republic got a fairly common one and she delivered a safe but strong answer. I thought the rest were fine, but nothing amazing. No predictions from me because I know nothing.

I think Dominican Republic is the best.

Venezuela gave a pretty generic answer IMO.

For me the crown should be for USA, best answer overall and very to the point though she exceeded the 30 seconds

Second place for Dominican Republic and third Venezuela, she had a very generic and 'world peace' answer

I think Dominican Republic is the best.
I like her best. I think she'll be third though. I didn't like Venezuela's answer either, but the last line may have saved her, as generic as it may have been. I think they should've removed the mic from USA when the 30 seconds were up. I've seen non-native English speaking contestants go overtime because they're trying hard to answer in English and they cut them off, but Miss USA has no excuse. I think she'll win.

I gave up guessing when I thought it was clear Peru was best by a mile all the way through the pageant a few years ago and they gave her 3rd place (sorry Braulio lol)

The only time I guessed the winner was when France won a few years ago. I watched the preliminary competition and I called it for France then. That was the only time I watched the prelim in full.

ETA: Did he just say that El Salvador is the safest country in Latin America? Then why are flight attendants transported to their hotels with a military parade around them and advised to not leave until it's time to go back to the airport? I know two AA flight attendants and that's what they told me.

Out of the final three Miss USA was the best, so it's good that she won.

I don't know the answers because Telemundo didn't let us hear English. They showed English text on the screen only for the question but not for the answers.

I was surprised that Dominican Rep made the final three. She was looking down throughout.

I didn't like Venezuela. She shouldn't have been in the final three. I would have picked Curaçao.
