T/M and S/K at the pro-war rally today in the Luzhniki stadium with a Z on their jackets. Seeing the way sport is used to prop up the regime makes me even more convinced that banning Russia from competition is the right thing to do.
This is very disheartening and so disappointing! Navka screaming a couple of weeks ago about how sport and politics should not be intertwined??

The image looks like it has been doctored with the Z added. If you look at the placement of it on the uniforms it is all over the place. Plus the guy in the background with no uniform wearing a gold medal? Anyone know who he is?

It's really disheartening. Even if they were pressured, realistically, it will be part of how people look at them and it's happening right at the end of their careers most likely.

They’re made of ribbon material hence the weird look. If you zoom in on this image shared by @airgelaal in another thread, you can see Tarasova’s very clearly:

Cross-posting from a different thread, but I would not discount the skaters being forced into this for social media activity.

Before Russians lost access to Instagram, Sinistina posted some things that could be construed as saying as much anti-war as she could (and is a close personal friend of Nazarova) and Tarasova had liked a bunch of posts that were vaguely anti-war…. Morozov started following Nazarova on Instagram after the war started…. (And T/m are coached by max, married to a Ukrainian and who posted anti-war stories before losing access to Instagram) And now, here they are at this thing.

This is the last account Tarasova started following on Instagram: https://instagram.com/tamarapodanyova?utm_medium=copy_link

The person is in Latvia, seems to be a psychologist, but is posting about what is really happening in Ukraine.

T/M and S/K also have the distinction of being the only skaters on the Olympic team to have trained in the US. (And Tarasova liked at least a couple of anti-Putin things on Instagram while they were here). I’m guessing the skaters were there under threat.

None of the girls, including Scherbekova, have posted, liked, or followed anything at all either way about the invasion.

I didn't notice until now that one of the Russian team sponsors, as per the logo on the jackets, was Zasport. I don't know anything about the company, but given what Z is representing now, it's an....interesting choice of name.

Zasport has done the Russian jackets for several years.

Even if they were pressured
They're pretty ecstatic and proud, actually. Katsalapov posted video on his Vk page with selfie and "speech" about "It's important for me to represent my country under the flag.. Sport is separated from politics.. Sport is peace.. Sport is life". The video itself called "Concert". Full disconnect from reality.

Russians live in a very different information field than rest of the world. If you'll try to watch russian TV or read news outlets, you'll be amazed by the absurdity and the tone of the news. Like today they aired Ministry of Defence briefing saying that Ukraine mined the hospital in Dnipro and want to blow it up when russian aircraft will be flying over the city. That's not a joke. That's the level of insanity of propaganda and BS russians live for decades.

There are some postings from Victoria's telegram of them all together. She posted a photo of the guys sitting together looking at their phones and looking bored and one of her and Yevgenia. They don't look unhappy in the photos but perhaps it's just another social engagement to them. They can also be patriotic and believe that Russia is right about the threat that Ukraine/Nato poses.

That's the impression that I get from their photos. However they owe their athletic careers and achievements to that regime. They wouldn't receive this kind of honor and privilege anywhere else.

This is true and that’s why I have a hard time being angry at the individual skaters. It’s like getting mad at someone who was raised in a cult. People can only form a view of the world based on the information they have available to them. The skaters may have been willing participants in this event, but they didn’t make that decision with access to the same information as most of the world has outside of Russia.

I agree. Unfortunately, even if the athletes are not fully informed or willing participants, the real problem with allowing them to compete internationally is that they essentially function as government employees.

They also don’t have the same power we in free/more free societies have to object or say no. Just in general across the board, when I see comments like Russians can just vote Putin out or an expectation that responses be what they are in non-dictatorships, I wonder if people realize how things work in dictatorships.

I keep thinking about this video I saw some years ago that came from North Korea. It was an impressively choreographed and performed military propaganda video. I keep expecting Russia to put out something similar.

But athletes often travel abroad. They train there. S/K and T/M trained in the USA. They understand everything perfectly. They understand that their success is largely the merit of the policy of their state. How can they go against this system?

The system probably also makes it impossible to go against, under threat if necessary.

At least in the case of t/m, their recent since the invasion follows were people outside of Russia posting the truth about Ukraine. Would the system see that as a betrayal of their investment and result in a requirement to attend this or else (threat to them and/or parents, siblings, and other family members) given that chilling speech calling for eliminating western influences blah blah blah?

Younger Russians who live in the major cities, have traveled abroad, use social media, etc. are exposed to plenty of other information and points of view. Thousands of them are leaving the country now because they don't agree with the propaganda and they see the writing on the wall...things are going to only get worse. Unfortunately there are even more Russians who know better, but they can't leave for various reasons - lack of money, family obligations, etc.

Soon YouTube will be blocked. Right now they can still access blocked sites with VPN, but who's to say they won't be further restricted in a few months to be more like Cuba or North Korea. Then they really will have no exposure to anything besides propaganda.

I understand that athletes sponsored by the state have certain obligations, but this tacky rally does not seem like something everyone was forced to attend...otherwise where are the other medalists? The optics are terrible. I didn't like S/K anyway, but I am extremely disappointed in T/M. What does Tatiana Volosozhar think of her friends being there?

At least with T/m, they both folllwed after the invasion people who were sharing what is actually happening in Ukraine?

You don’t think it’s possible for some people to be forced as punishment and others who have said nothing either way to not be forced? Or maybe be made to be an example of what happens if you dare even follow accounts outside of Russia telling the truth. Max posted a bunch of anti-war stories. Maybe it’s possible his team was forced as a message. Nikita did post gloating about using a VPN to gain access to the outside world…. Russia doesn’t want people to access the outside world right now.

I found the bizarre North Korean video I was thinking about and 75% expect Russia to make their own version. https://youtu.be/tKRelLh88YE

Edit: This article was shared by @Sylvia in a different thread: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60793319.amp

Many told the BBC they worked in the public sector, and that they had been pressured into attending by their employers.
One man who works in the Moscow metro, told us that he and other employees had been forced to attend the rally.
"I'll be here for a while and then I'll leave… I think most people here don't support the war. I don't," he said.
Many people didn't want to be filmed or answer questions.
Students told us they had been given the option of a day off from lectures if they attended "a concert". Some of the students we spoke to didn't even know that the event was dedicated, in part, to support the war in Ukraine.

They’re pawns of the regime.
Then how come everyone else isn't there. These couples chose to go. They do not look coerced and in one of those photos, Morozov looked moved with emotion. No one even knows these people and their political views. Their families could have been well connected in the former Communist party and they may support Putin. You can't tell anything by looking at whom they follow on Instagram. There are a lot of views out there from people who are Ukrainian who are living elsewhere, that the US is doing its part to heighten the conflict.

To add, these people are not your little pets. It is really patronizing how on boards, people assume there is a "good side." Someone just asked if Sarah Hughes was conservative bc she dated Guiliani's son. What difference does it make if she is? And also, does everyone only have friends who think like them? I think that's the real problem, rather than speculating on political views of complete strangers.

Not to throw gasoline on the fire, but Nazarova/Nikitin both posted the following along with photographs from the propaganda event on their Instagrams @ Victoria and Nikita:

"Not so long ago we supported them in this difficult Olympic season, now they support the war against us and our country."

I don’t blame anyone for not giving these skaters who attended a pro-war rally the benefit of the doubt.

I think if S/K were really forced, then Sasha and Max would not have written such words

are you implying that the athletes who were there was pressured to be there to "prove" they are good patriotic citizens. because they have been given other signals?

I wonder why 2x silver medalists were there, and not Scherbekova, a OGM.

in any case, the whole thing is disgusting.

Hypothetically? Government is surveilling people for social media and other activity (email, phone calls). Someone says something/ does something that the regime does not agree with and the regime issues a different this or else threat to put in an appearance to “prove their loyalty.” People who didn’t say anything at all or who have already expressed support are left alone.

No, we don’t know these people, but same time, in this situation, being forced into this or otherwise coerced is a very real possibility.

Read the bbc article. State employees were forced to attend. Students were told if they attended this concert, they’d get a day off of lectures without being told what this was really going to be about.

Quoting this again:

I think it’s one possibility given the things that go on in dictatorships. Russia does not want its citizens accessing or communicating with the outside world, particularly and especially if it’s a source or person communicating about what’s really going on in Ukraine.

Scherbekova has posted nothing at all one way or the other about the war. So, if this was about a punishment or making an example… she’d be in the clear.

There were athletes other than skaters there. Have any of those athletes posted anything anti-war.

I don’t follow the other sports that closely. I did see a tweet where someone thought it was interesting the particular gymnast who were there were the ones there rather than ones have been very outspokenly pro-Putin.

Regardless, it is sickening either way. If this was forced as a punishment for following some social media accounts from non-Russians posting about the war or accessing information from outside of Russia…. That says a lot about the situation there in a context even more broad than this. I know my friend who had the friend in Russia is communicating with the friend over telegram but still using sekret code because they’re terrified of the government finding things… and this friend is just a woman who has a dog and a cat, an Etsy business, and teaches Russian language lessons over zoom. She’s a nobody.

Look, both Sinitsina and Katsalapov have made more than enough money as World Champions and now Olympic medalists to have, if they were truly anti-war and horrified by Putin's actions, gotten out of the country 2-3 weeks ago. And they could have taken their immediate family members with them. It isn't as though they couldn't have done what Kazakova/Reviya did and fly to southern Russia then drive across the border into Georgia. They could have and they did not. Then, they showed up at this rally today. Even if they were told a day or two ago to show up, in their Olympic team gear no less, they still could have packed up their cars and started driving south. They have made their choice and I do not believe they were coerced into anything.
