Love, Balls and Courting: Tennis V

Monfils also achieved the same record today!
Oh wow! His wiki page says he has reached a tour final every year since 2005 but he wasn’t on the list I saw today that had Djokovic in 2nd place at 16 years running and Fed I think was in 3rd place, he had ended his consecutive run of years at 15. Has Monfils won a title in 19 years but not consecutively?

Either way what an amazing career! :cheer:

He has 20 slams. I’m not saying he doesn’t care about tennis when he has 20 slams! It’s so easy to get a shot and I don’t understand why he won’t but the rules allowed for exceptions If you had it and now he’s had it twice so he qualifies for exceptions
Except the exemptions don’t say that you are exempt if you’ve had it twice. Or even if you’ve had it once. The exemptions say “recent acute major medical illness” including with c*vid can be a contraindication to vaccination. He’s never said he had acute symptoms (this is the argument the Australian government is running).

I’ll have my popcorn ready for the hearing today. A win would mean that either the government appeals (and unlikely an appeal could be heard on time) or the decision maker has to make a new decision. And that new decision could be cancellation, again. So I think he’s unlikely to play either way tbh.

Unless he is deluded why would you want to put yourself in a situation where you are going to be the most unpopular person in the room?

He’s at the height of his career. He’s on the cusp of proving he’s the greatest player of all time on any objective measure. Why would he care what people think?

Meanwhile Ash Barty is such a class act. I’m so glad young women have her as a role model!

NYT article

Looks as if it's more of a problem of the Province, Federal, and Tennis Australia and diverging ideas of handling C-19 and entry into the country! Djokovic observed conditions of some who say it's ok to come into the country if proven to have had C-19 within the last 6 months! There's also a question of fairness at the border when it came to the VISA interview! It's a mess and will taint the tournament for a while! Accommodations should have been made with the #1 player in the world! :wall::blah::2faced:

Novak has won his case and the order to cancel his visa has been squashed by Judge Kelly on the 'procedural grounds.'
The Australian gov't has expressed its readiness to re-cancel the visa and redetain Djokovic, so round 2 is coming.
Judge Kelly has said that Novak can be released from hotel quarantine in the next 30 minutes. :40beers: :wall::summer:

Ooh the government withdrew from the case mid way through the hearing :watch:

That’s a default win for Novak, but now the immigration minister is considering whether to exercise his personal power to cancel.

Drama!

ETA - regardless of how he won, the court doesn’t have the power to grant a visa. The most they could do was send it back to the decision maker to be remade. And since the decision maker effed it up and it’s high profile, it’s actually normal that the minister would make the decision instead.

Will be very interesting to see whether the government’s had a change of heart about starting war with Serbia :shuffle:

So Djokovic is out of the quarantine hotel, yet could still be deported? I didn't think this could possibly look worse for Australia, but this has become theatre of the absurd. Either he meets the entry requirements, or he doesn't. How many people does it take to determine this? Make up your mind.

It’s an issue of who has jurisdiction over what.

I can so relate to this.

I’ve spent a good chuck of my career tangled in these issues with respect to who owns what data and who is allowed to access it on a community, provincial and federal level. :argue:

What a mess.

Ugh this just leaves such a bad taste in my mouth. Should not have been allowed to enter in the first place. So because Australia f**ed up its own rules, he gets to stay?

Oh, yeah and being maskless at events with kids after a positive COVID test...just gross.

Just goes to show that if you are rich and famous, you can get away with anything.

I thought he maybe didn’t know he was positive when he was out and about at multiple events on the 17th without a mask. But he knew - on his own evidence he got that result at 8pm on the 16th.

Did he quarantine after he got the evidence? Did he start wearing mask when he was with people after that?

Watching news clips from around the world and Australia in particular where Nole's PR is working! Tennis Australia is made to look foolish along with politicians more concerned with their own popularity in an election year! Just saw Justin Quill of Channel 9 say "Australia's being made to look like oppressers" the way they've treated Novak, the #1 player in the World! Now Zali Steggall is lambasting officials! I said this was going to be a mess and it has; really much bigger than I thought! Now Chris Smith is giving it a go agreeing it's been shameful; the politics and treatment where food with maggots being served at that dump hotel! :wall::2faced::summer:

So if he is rich and famous, he should be treated differently from others who broke the same rules?

No. he got the result at 8pm on the 16th. He was at an awards ceremony that night and he didn’t wear a mask or leave. He then went to multiple events the following day involving kids, maskless, and went to a photo shoot on the 18th, massless. His wife’s social media also indicates they went to a museum on a family outing.

It takes so long to get PCR results here that I assumed a test done on the 17th might not be back before the 20th so maybe he didn’t know. But no. He knew and didn’t care. Or it’s a fake PCR test ;)

To put it bluntly, is he lying?

To put it bluntly, is he lying?
Well…maybe? Either he’s lying about the positive PCR test or he actually is a danger to the health and safety of the community (which was the reason his visa was cancelled).

No word yet on whether they will cancel again. The cynic in me thinks the government would be doing some polling so they can make a politically popular decision :shuffle:

In other news, Kyrgios is positive and out of the Sydney international. Ash Barty withdrew to focus on prep for the Australian Open. My tennis obsessed colleague has tickets for the Sydney international but isn’t going because of the amount of c*vid around. Big shame for that event!

I also can’t get over the fact that he would have conveniently gotten infected a month ahead of the AO as his only way to get in. And did he have symptoms which lead him to get tested or close contact with someone who had it, yet did not isolate while waiting for results or after? Or did he just keep trying to get infected everywhere and then test himself every day to see if it worked? And then once confirmed, not put it on social media like most players do and he did before? So as not to cancel the kids event? All these scenarios are ridiculous.

He’ll get to stay and play now I’m sure, and I’m irrationally p*ssed off about it.

If you are PO'ed about it, that is not irrational.

Every news clip from "down under" seems to feel it would be better to be hypocrites and allow Novak to play over running him out of the country where the NEWS would go on for heaven knows how long! This is a Victorian event so Chris Smith (9) is on Dan Andrews' arse & doling out a lot of blame for changing his stance on the issue! :wall::blah::duh::bribe:
