Now Manta is sharing the story of her journey in a new book, On Top Of Glass: My Stories As A Queer Girl In Figure Skating.
This week she joined Outsports’ Five Rings To Rule podcast to talk about coming out and being out in figure skating, body-image issues she has faced and how being different sometimes felt dangerous and how that contributed to the title of the book.
...
“As much as the book is about skating it’s about teenage girlhood,” she said, “and skating gave me a heightened experience of teenage girlhood. I hope people walk away from it respecting and honoring that experience, and also believing that institutions can change to protect all kinds of people.”
On Top Of Glass comes out Oct. 19.
Information on Karina's book, including excerpts online as well as from her audiobook, read by Karina herself:
PRAISE
“Resolute and hopeful, this memoir swells with emotion. Raw, kind, and close to the heart.”–Kirkus

“Manta’s talent as a writer is obvious throughout. Particularly impressive is the gentleness and clarity with which the author approaches her younger self and past mistakes.”–School Library Journal
Karina will celebrate her book launch day (Tuesday, October 19, 2021) with an Instagram Live chat with Jason Brown :): https://www.instagram.com/p/CVLXDINLUWU/
But before I ever knew I wanted to write a book, before @jasonbskates ever became an Olympian, before we both adopted shorter haircuts, before we were both iconically known to be LGBTQs…we were prom dates!
Tomorrow night Jason and I are going to be embracing all things camp and coming-of-age on Instagram live. Tune in at 8pm eastern to join my little virtual book launch! I can’t wait to party with you all.🎉🎉🎉
And if anyone lives near Aspen Grove, Colorado: https://www.instagram.com/p/CUgI4nWL5pR/
You are all invited to my book launch at Tattered Cover in Aspen Grove on October 23rd.
(Ahhh!! I have a book launch! Nobody wake me up if I’m dreaming!!)
If stories about teenage girlhood and brooding guitar songs are your thing, this is the event for you! @ren.elizabeth.music will be there, and she’s going to provide the perfect soundtrack to the evening—because what’s a coming-of-age story without a soundtrack?
I really can’t wait, and it would mean the freaking world to see you all there!💖

Karina Manta has shared this Instagram post about her in person book signing at this Barnes & Noble store on Saturday, June 11 from 12 noon to 3 pm in Tukwila, Washington (just north of Tacoma): https://stores.barnesandnoble.com/store/2607

Read the book over a couple hours last night. Not going to spoil it for folks, but it was very enjoyable to read. A great companion to Tillie Walden's Spinning and A.J. Sass's Ana on the Edge.

Catching up with Karina Manta about Her Book, Pride Month and More by Rachel Lutz (June 24, 2023):
Manta was quick to point out that she would feel like she was missing something on the ice if Johnson wasn't her partner, though. She suggested he could be the team's coach, if she ever did return to the ice in that capacity, as a way to keep their working partnership intact.
In fact, Manta and Johnson continue to skate on tour professionally to this day and coach skating lessons in New York City together.
"A lot of our decisions career-wise have been in tandem," Manta explained. "We both really had desired to have a home base, especially after not having that [while on British television]. I really love New York. We have really wanted to live in New York for a long time. I slightly pressured Joe into going; I wasn't doing it without him! It just made sense for us to come together."
Karina and Joe will perform with Ice Dance International in the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts on July 5 - ticket info (Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival 2023): https://www.jacobspillow.org/events/ice-dance-international-2023/
