Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Just saw previews of the new West Side Story and if Spielberg doesn’t get the same criticism as Lin-Manuel Miranda I will be ticked but not surprised.
Even if one of the main characters is a black Latina actress? Do the Sharks look more whitewashed in general than the In the Heights cast?

7/10 - The Decline (Netflix) - A 2020 action thriller about a survivalist training program where a fluke accident occurs...and leaves everyone else at odds on how they should deal with the accident that happened. I'm wondering if thrillers are hard to get right...there's always going to be somebody pointed out a plot point problem here or there. This movie suffers that same fate, but the story is interesting and the performances are all good. Perhaps the movie is just a little on the cheesy side, but I found this to be pretty good escapist fun.

7/10 - Standoff (Tubi) - Another thriller starring Laurence Fishburne and Thomas Jane and a fantastic child actress, Ella Ballentine. Fishburne stars as a hitman who is spotted mid-job by a girl...and her camera. The girl makes a run for it and ends up at a house of a man (Jane) packing up his house after a personal tragedy has broken up his family. Jane's character is ex-military and vows to protect the girl. This, being a thriller, has a few plot problems (like the previous film), but the acting of the three main characters is so good that one can let a few things slide and just enjoy some great performances happening on screen.

5/10 - Common Threads: Stories From The Quilt (DVD) - A 1989 HBO documentary about the AIDS quilt, with five stories spotlighted of people who had a quilt made for them. Such an important topic (and project). But the tone of the director for this film is so sombre and dour. I felt dragged into a bit of a despressed state. The music doesn't help, it has the same feeling of the movie and it's basically the same stormcloud of a tune on repeat and used constantly throughout pretty much the entire...length...of the...movie. But what do I know, this won the Oscar for best documentary in 1990...

Well, you know what they say opinions are like, and that goes for mine as well, but I was frustrated and saddened at your final emoji regarding Common Threads winning the AA for Best Documentary. I am pretty sure that the partner of one of the people profiled in that film was from my hometown and that his family attended the same church that I did growing up.

Maybe you should look up "Drop Dead Gorgeous" by Steve Moore (a Virginian, BTW, whose nephew is an acquaintance of mine) - the lighter but no less heartbreaking tone of his experience in living with AIDS (which eventually took his life after many years) might be less "despressing" to you.

I think Common Threads was (and is) an important documentary. I'm glad it was made and still exists for people to see. I just thought the stories told would be a moment to remember, honour and celebrate of those who we lost to AIDS. I remember going to the AIDS quilt when it came to Vancouver and while there was a lot of quiet and sorrow, there was also a lot of hugging and smiling and even laughter. I didn't get any sense of that kind of warmth or joyful remembrance from Common Threads. :(

6/10 - Things Heard And Seen (Netflix) - A 2021 thriller with a supernatural edge, starring Amanda Seyfried, James Norton, Karen Allen, Michael O'Keefe and F. Murray Abraham. This movie was so good for the first three quarters...then in the last half hour, it veered off the tracks careening farther and farther into a non-sensical conclusion...in more ways than one. I don't think I've ever enjoyed a movie so much and then end up being so disappointed in it! And the movie is based on a novel...usually with book to film adaptations, the screenwriter can iron out any bugs with the book. But I wonder if the writer maybe wanted to switch up the ending but screwed it up instead of switched it up. So I guess in spite of loving this movie for the majority of the running time...I have to tell you to skip it because of the horrible way they took the story for the ending. :(

Bikes Vs. Cars is a 2015 documentary about the use (or not) of bicycles in large cities. Sao Paulo, Los Angeles and Toronto are some of the cities featured in this film. I found the movie a bit of a downer and rather dry to watch. Like something your boss would make the employees watch. Plus the movie switched back and forth between cities, so your attention/focus had to change when all of a sudden the dialogue went from English to Spanish and the need to read sub-titles would start then stop (as they moved the story to L.A. or Toronto) over and over again.

7/10 - How To Win At Checkers (Every Time) - A 2015 drama from Thailand about two brothers who live with their aunt after both of their parents have passed away. The younger boy is not yet a teenager and this story is about how his older brother receives his draft papers for military service (and the boy's fear of losing the last member of his immediate family). This is a well made movie and is quite amazing in that the gay and trans characters are all seen the same as any of the other characters. Their sexuality is accepted and homophobia is not part of the storyline (although poverty for the gay/trans characters is definitely an issue). This movie was selected as Thailand's entry for Oscar consideration for best foreign language film (but was not nominated).

6/10 - Time Trap (Netflix) - A 2107 sci-fi adventure film with a new cast. There is a lot wrong with this movie, but a lot right as well. Mainly the premise of a group of young people who follow their professor into a cave where his parents disappeared decades earlier. Is this cave the source of the fountain of youth, or is something else at play? I don't want to say more so as to not give it away, but this could have been an AMAZING movie if Spielberg was producing and/or directing. Hey, if any of you know Steve, maybe you could have him check into buying the rights to this story and doing a remake??

New Shang Chi stuff! :cheer2:

My friend, for some reason, gave me another review of Snake Eyes:

We saw G.I.Joe: Snake Eyes yesterday. Meh about says it all. Aubrey gives it a 5. I gave it 5 too. Lots and lots and lots of sword fighting, shooting, and martial arts. Not much story but better than the first G.I.Joe. Had a bit of a cheap marvel feel to it. I wouldn’t recommend it for anything other than a cool place to eat popcorn while the world passes by (or melts) outside.

Me: And you couldn't even enjoy the hotness that is Henry Golding (like the rest of the world). ???

His response: Who? Lol

(He's more into the bear part of the gay world...!) :D

Anyone else looking forward to The House of Gucci set for release in November? -

IDK. I am intrigued w. Lady Gaga <-> acting. She seems to have the chops and she is styled well. The movie is about the wife of the heir apparent of the Gucci empire who arranged for the murder of her husband. In the 1990s, the trial had an O.J. Simpson level of press attention in Italy.

7/10 - The Lady From Shanghai (DVD) - A 1947 film noir directed by and starring Orson Welles with Rita Hayworth. This movie builds very nicely and seems almost like three movies in one. The first, where the characters all meet in New York City, the second where they travel on a yacht through the panama canal to San Francisco, and the final story, in a courtroom setting after Welles character has been charged with murder. Then the famous dramatic conclusion at an abandoned amusement park in the Hall of Mirrors attraction. Hayworth is wonderful in this movie. I felt the same about her performance as I did with Gilda...she uses her eyes so well at the moments when it has such an impact. Especially in the final scenes of the movie. It seems strange to me that she next to nothing in regards to award show recognition during her career.

5/10 - Eating Out (Tubi) - A 2004 gay-themed comedy made on a very low budget ($50,000). I would have liked to have rated this higher as there are some fairly good performances in this movie. But the direction is uneven. The script, although it has some high points, is overly precious too often. And the cinematography and especially the lighting are rather lacking at times. But I liked the characters in spite of their flaws, and the movie cliches which I expected to happen...didn't. So I was pleased that the script avoided the obvious quite often. An unknown cast except for Jim Verraros from season one of American Idol and Ryan Carnes who spent many years on General Hospital.

Trailer for Eating Out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cixBLpKhZMg

2/10 - Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones - So I am not a snowflake when it comes to stand-up comedy. I enjoy comedians who push the envelopes like Jim Jeffries, Kathy Griffin, Jimmy Carr, Anthony Jeselnik, etc. But I found that Chappelle missed the mark with this special. He was going for politically incorrect, but ended up coming across as the straight black male version of those out there who wish things were the way they were back in the good old days. Especially the very long segment on those in the LGBTQ community. He just came across as a bigot to me, even though he delivered his material in a humourous way (and his audience seemed to be loving it). And a bigot unlike Jeffries or Jeselnik who slyly let you know that they are being a male chauvanist (or are they really not...but are making fun of male chauvanists?). So the more I think about this special, the more I feel dirty having watched it. So as the day progressed, my rating for this special went from a five to a four to a three...and ended up as just a two out of ten. Yuck.

No trailer at youtube...at least not one that makes any sense.

6/10 - The Tomorrow War (Amazon Prime) - This one seemed to be advertised so hard, I should have known I would buckle and watch it eventually. I do love a big Hollywood popcorn movie. This is another movie that seems to be in three parts. The first (and final third) parts are the cheesiest of action sci-fi movies, with stock characters and groan-worthy dialogue. The middle third of the movie is more serious with better dialogue and seemingly better direction. It's also the part of the movie that co-stars Yvonne Strahovski, who I recognized but couldn't place. I checked out her filmography and saw that she is in the TV show The Handmaid's Tale. I assumed she was on a season of that show that I have yet to see, because I couldn't place her role on that show. But I did a google image and she plays (played? don't spoil me!) the main bad guy's wife. OMG...wouldn't have thought it was the same person playing these two different roles. So she made this movie worthwhile for me.

5/10 - Saw II (Blu-ray) - Donnie Wahlberg is the star of this (in his first big lead movie role) as a police office trying to figure out where a group of people are being held captive by Jigsaw. And the catch is that one of the people in this group is his son. I found this movie to be more extreme than the first Saw. I had to look away more times and even fast-forwarded it a few times as I couldn't handle what was happening on the screen. The first movie was more of a psychological thriller than slasher flick. They upped the gruesome factor with this one. So it was a bit much for me, but at the end of the movie, they showed about 30 lines of the movie edited tightly together which lays out that a puzzle was happening in real time and if people had just listened to what they were told, things would have proceeded very much differently. Who knew Jigsaw was basically just promoting mindfulness??

From "The Ringer":
The latest Arthurian adaptation is here, and it hails from none other than acclaimed indie studio A24. The Green Knight follows the tale of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), a newly minted knight on King Arthur’s Round Table, as he undergoes a long and arduous journey to prove his valor. What begins as a straightforward quest morphs into a thought-provoking meditation on the nature of honor and bravery. Below, The Ringer staff weighs in on the film’s notable insights, visual splendor, and more.

1. What is your tweet-length review of The Green Knight?

Rob Mahoney: When the end credits rolled, all I wanted to do was watch it again.

Arjuna Ramgopal: It’s the epic, Arthurian legend we deserve, and it’s the one we need right now. It’s awesome.

Alison Herman: I’d happily watch Dev Patel stroll the English countryside for two hours straight—and I basically did!

Aric Jenkins: To quote the guy I overheard walking out of the theater at the same time as me: “I don’t get it.” To be more specific, I do get the point of the film, but maybe not all the hype surrounding it?

Andrew Gruttadaro: Saw The Green Night and now I have to take the rest of the week off.

Julianna Ress: They really made Groot a lot scarier since the last Marvel movie I saw.

A Long Way Down is a British black comedy which I LOVED. It stars Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) and Imogeen Poots as four people who randomly find themselves atop a building on New Year's Eve. They quickly learn that they had all planned to leap off the edge and commit suicide. That does not happen as they all get in each other's way, both literally and figuratively. So what happens next with four people who have a connection through such a strange circumstance? The movie explores this in both a funny and touching way. I see that this movie isn't rated well online, but they are stupid dumbheads. This movie is GREAT. :D Also appearing in this movie in small roles are Sam Neill and Rosamund Pike.

Definitely. Saw the trailer and looks great.

New Shang Chi stuff! :cheer2:

I'm almost over Marvel as an entity (their movies all basically have the same plot), but there are four things drawing me to this one:

1. Awkwafina. I enjoy her in whatever she is in and yet I don't think the movie world has found something to really showcase all she has to offer.

2. Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Crazy Rich Asians and all four of the upcoming Avatar movies). One of my favourite Chinese actresses.

3. Tony Leung as Shang-Chi's father. My favourite Chinese actor, so good in In The Mood For Love, Infernal Affairs and Lust Caution. Cannes Film Festival winner and 13 time nominee at the Hong King Film Awards (he won seven times). And from a quick scan of his imdb filmography, this is his first English language movie.

4. Destin Daniel Cretton as director. He directed the fantastic Short Term 12 (which starred Brie Larson, LaKeith Stanfield and Rami Malek) as well as the more recent Just Mercy (starring Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson again).

And the movie also stars Tom Roth and Ronny Chiang (The Daily Show). :)

I enjoyed "Judy" and Renee Zellweger's performance in it. But as the movie is about the last year of life, it is heartbreaking to watch. But there is a moment of sweetness in the middle of the movie where a gay couple wait at the exit of the theater when Garland is leaving one night. She is very sweet to them and they adore her. They end up walking together for a while and when they can't find a place to eat, they sheepishly say they could cook her a meal at their place if she would like. The time at their home that we see is (bitter) sweet. I would have been okay with the whole movie being about Garland and these two fans. Because the rest of the movie is just so sad! :(

Ok all y’all Even though it came out exactly 20 years ago I still to this day cannot stop watching Nicole Kidman and the very small cast of the movie “THE OTHERS!” It’s just blown me away, 20 years later. Yes I know it came out about six months or so after the sixth sense but this is the most original and fascinating script I think I may have ever seen

I think this movie has the biggest twist I’ve ever seen as far as twist goes and even more so than the sixth sense. Even though I’ve watched it probably 25 times in my life I still keep discovering things like when she goes to cock the shotgun to go after the housekeepers she has a look of déjà vu on her face and after watching this 20 times I finally realized why she has that look of déjà vu

I just still can’t get enough of this movie

❤️

Wow, read all the comments on the YouTube page about this movie. That sums it up. Underrated, masterpiece, exceptional ghost story!!

Nicole Kidman was nominated for a Golden Globe for this but for the Oscars she split the nomination with Moulin Rouge and the nomination went to Moulin Rouge. If you ask me this is an Oscar worthy film and definitely Oscar nominated worthy performance

8/10 - Old (movie theatre!) - This one blew my mind. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it a day after seeing it. It's based on a graphic novel...as I was typing this I started searching libraries to see if they have it. And if there's an English language translation (the original is in French). One library has one copy...and it has 22 holds! I'm guessing there are plenty of other people impressed by this movie. I don't want to say too much about it because it's one of those movies which slowly reveals more and more of what is going on until your mind is blown by the ending. The cast includes Gael Garcia Bernal, Rufus Sewell, Alex Wolff, Thomasin McKenzie (so wonderful in Leave No Trace) and Ken Leung (Lost).

8/10 - A Fantastic Woman (Blu-Ray) - A Chilean drama about a trans woman whose partner dies suddenly. This won the best foreign language film a few years ago at the Oscars. After her partner dies, things get even worse. But she refuses to let anyone or any thing hold her down. This movie was directed by Sebastián Lelio, who directed Gloria, which was remade in English as Gloria Bell (starring Julianne Moore). A Fantastic Woman is a great movie, but tough to watch at times. But worthy of your time if you like strong dramas about even stronger women. :)

6/10 - Perfect Sisters (Tubi) - A 2014 crime drama starring Abigail Breslin and Mira Sorvino. Breslin plays one of Sorvino's two daughters, who experience abuse and neglect for pretty much their entire lives. The abuse is psychological, physical and sexual. And it happens on a regular basis. The girls also fear they may become homeless as the struggles their Mom is going through are so great that she cannot provide much stability for her daughters and son. The daughters take on a parental role for their younger brother and towards their mother as well. One day, the girls play a fantasy "What If" game (that they have done in different ways in the past to deal with their trauma). But this time it's "what if we killed our mother..."? The "what if" scenario goes farther than with their other coping mechanisms. I thought this movie was good, but the tone was a bit "Afterschool Special". As if the director wanted to "lighten things up" because the subject material was too dark. But that just served to make the movie not have the depth that it warranted. Still, I give it a thumbs up (for the most part).

The Kate Logan Affair is a horribly cheesy Canadian drama starring Alexis Bledel as a young police officer who begins an affair with a businessman visiting from France. Well, cheaters never win, so you know the both of them are doomed. Or are they? Problems arise and the two disagree on how to handle matters. The choices made end up deadly. Bledel deserves better material than this. She is the only well known actor in this movie. Maybe she took the job because of the free trip to Alberta.
