2020-21 Canadian Pairs News & Updates

Whatever the implications for how many medals KMT could have won in the 2014/18 quad, we should overall be glad she switched partners since we wouldn't have had a top pair in this quad otherwise.

I agree with this. If she had stuck with Dylan she would have been left without a partner after the 2018 Olys.

It’s great that Evans posts clips of his skaters. He’s posted one recently though of Lily Wilberforce doing a twist off-ice and she has such a bent leg for the “split”. Ugh.
Agree it’s nice Evans posts clips of the progress his skaters are making, especially during a time when a lack of competitions doesn’t provide an opportunity for parents and fans to see some of these younger skaters. Looking through the clips (and I’m sure this is happening in other skating schools) it’s encouraging to see so many of his young skaters landing double axels and triples. One 11 year old even has a lovely triple lutz double toe combo. Good work being done there.

I just watched KMT/M LP on CBC. Not a fan of her packaging here both costume and flower in hair.

Their twist has regressed but maybe an injury.

Really didn't love the LP dress. Nothing about The Blower's Daughter should include mint green/bordering on lime green. A rare miss from Mathieu Carron. I've loved every other costume he's done for her, but this was was a huge NOPE from me.

I too suspect she may still be dealing with an injury. She seemed just a bit off the entire event, in ways that were uncharacteristic for her. But in the end, not a bad effort considering the year that led to this.

I assume Walsh/Michaud are doing WTT. We know M-T/M bowed out, and per what KMTs said on instagram this morning, Trennt Michaud is already back in Canada. Assuming they went back early to get a couple extra training days in after quarantine before going to Japan?

None of the skaters who went to Worlds are doing WTT - it will be Lori-Ann MATTE / Thierry FERLAND in Pairs.

None of the skaters from Canada who went to Worlds are going to WTT.
Yes, I’m well aware of that as the teams were posted on on March 31st.

My initial speculation over why Michaud went home early from
Worlds occurred when worlds was still happening. All I was saying in the comment you replied to was that he must have had another reason to go back early.

The Worlds c19 protocol requested that skaters depart as soon as their competition was complete so a LOT of pairs teams headed out on Friday, and a lot of ladies followed suit by departing on Saturday.

As for our top 2 pairs teams, I think we have what we have.

If MT/M were going to get to the next level, it would have happened by now. Attempted a new jump combo a few years back but abandoned that. Unsure if it's training or just max potential or both, but I see no reason to believe they can crack the top 6 at the Olympics. Three Russian teams, Chinese teams skating at home and the likelihood that S-K/F blow past them should seal their fate.
No unique elements, levels and GoE stuck in the 2/3 range and a steady diet of Adult Contemporary that just isn't special any more. I hope they have a great season but I think much of the world is sadly looking past them now.

W/M have made some improvements in last few years. Twist and BoDS are better. She's landing 3S more consistently. But they, too are lacking base value, levels and GoE. Lots of work ahead if they want to break into the top 10 and much past the low 60s/120 threshold. Their LP got my attention this year but didn't seem to go anywhere. The energy in the 3rd cut of music was a bit higher, but I think they need a 3rd cut with faster tempo or just something a little 'more' to prevent the program from landing flat.

The good news is, things are percolating beneath that top layer and behind the scenes. Let's not assume that the landscape tomorrow will reflect what we see today. Excited to see what we put out on the grand prix this fall - something tells me we might have a battle at next year's nationals that I hope will elevate all teams to push that much harder.

Saw a news item today saying the US is either contemplating or will boycott the Winter Olympics in China. If Canada decides sooner than later to follow suit I suspect MTM will retire as might another pair or two if the goal of making the Olympics becomes a 5 year not 1 year endeavour. Then we will see that next layer of talent on display in 2022.

wonder if we’ll be seeing any competitions this summer? I am concerned for Canadian pair teams this season, seniors seem to be struggling to get up to the top shape needed.
I know it’s not fair to judge with just gone through such a crazy year. I wish them well with their training, and hope to see a few new pair teams pop up this season.

Is there a strong clockwise pair girl out there? Nadeau skates clockwise, doesn't he?Is there a strong clockwise pair girl out there? Nadeau skates clockwise, doesn't he?
Doesn’t Kaiya Ruiter jump clockwise? Doubt pairs is in her future vision but she’s got size and jumps as a big plus. Just throwing that out there.

The latest TSL video states that Eric is making plans to compete next season, partnering with another skater we haven't seen compete in a few years who hasn't previously competed for Canada but conveniently already has citizenship and has recently been appearing on a Canadian reality competition show.

I guess this is why Megan said in her IG stories the other day that she wouldn’t be skating again with Eric anytime soon? She said she would do shows as a solo act if she could.

It was a Q and A and she was asked directly.

Can we figure it out from the clues? I know zilch about Canadian reality shows . . .
