Also, for comparison as the day goes on, if everybody skated like they did in the individual YOG events, the results would be:

Team Courage - 22
Team Focus - 21
Team Discovery & Team Determination - 19
Team Motivation & Team Vision - 17
Team Future - 15
Team Hope - 14

The wide discrepancies between capabilities of many of the participants mean that this can be decided by relatively narrow fluctuations in performance; Kagiyama, for instance, would have a very hard time dropping lower than second place, same with Panfilova/Rylov. The ice dance in some ways strikes me as having a lot of potential for movement, since the Russian, Canadian, American and Japanese teams are all a bad twizzle away from shifting up and down noticeably.

The teams just look confused standing there. Bless them.
I’m guessing the organizers thought that this would be great fun for the participants. Unfortunately, you can’t force fun. Add in the “my fed is watching” component and it’s bound to be awkward.

I can't imagine the top skaters of any discipline are finding this to be much fun. They may just as well have given all the non medalsts a participation trophy if they wanted everybody to feel empowered.
Well, who knows, but at least Tuytuynina/Shustitskiy seemed to be having a lot of fun in the K'n'C. Probably at least some of them enjoy the chance to get to skate again in front of the wonderful audience.

:cheer: Brooke & Brandon give their best performance of the season; really impressed with how clean the twist catch has gotten, and the throws never better.

EDIT: I'm not clear why that score is lower than what they got in the individual, seeing as Brooke had a hand down on the throw Salchow in the earlier event.

Muk is not having a good day, but with the way the judges are scoring, they'll probably get a new PB

P/R would have to work hard to not win this segment now.
They could take their skates off and go shopping and still win.

Rylov is one of the best male pair skaters I've ever seen and he's only 18. Just think what he'll be like in 4 years. If I were Stolbova, I'd be putting on my cougar suit and trying to recruit the boy for a partner.

Still dreaming of Panfilova getting a triple jump, probably.
I sincerely hope she can get them because she's a quality skater, but if fate is such that she cannot, I hope he finds a different partner because this boy is Olympic medal worthy. If she can, then the sky is the limit for them as a team.

With the event half over, if you add on projected results based on the individual YOG events, the results would be:

Team Courage - 24 (+2)
Team Focus - 20 (-1)
Team Discovery - 19 (even)
Team Vision - 18 (+1)
Team Determination - 17 (-2)
Team Motivation - 17 (even)
Team Future - 15 (even)
Team Hope 14 (even)

Team Courage has this in the bag, frankly, because Sinitsyna can't realistically finish lower than second and their man is projected second-last, so he doesn't have much space to underperform.

Carle drops to the bottom of the rankings from projected fifth place, which gives Team Discovery a projected 16 points (-3), effectively out of medal contention.

Wang's overperformance has revived Team Focus' slim shot at gold, though they'd still need Sinitsyna and Levandi to help them out a bit.

Uncharacteristically sloppy from Sinitsyna.

EDIT: But enough for first place anyway. And with that, Team Courage's gold medal is locked. Levandi can finish dead last and they'd still win.

Projections based on current standings plus individual men's event scores (+ comparison to original projections):

Team Courage - 24 (+2)
Team Focus - 22 (+1)
Team Determination - 18 (-1)
Team Vision - 18 (+1)
Team Motivation - 17 (even)
Team Discovery - 16 (-3)
Team Future - 15 (even)
Team Hope - 14 (even)

Gold is now locked and silver is effectively decided too, unless Kagiyama decides to do his best imitation of Carolina Kostner at 2009 Worlds.

I'm not clear how the tiebreaker works if Determination and Vision both get 18 points, but Mozalev could make the difference for Team Vision if he can beat Kagiyama.
