I LOVE Kihira but she’s so inconsistent - I wouldn’t even consider a sure bet. I wish she could get some of the mental toughness from the Russian girls.

Fortunately (or unfortunately for some), NONE of the ladies are guaranteed shots to be in the Grand Prix Final. Every single event is STACKED and any of the ladies could very well place at or between 1st and 5th. Rika is inconsistent and with the added pressure of a quad-salchow and a triple-axel in the second half of the program, only time will tell how she manages to stay focused. Zagitova showed last season that under great pressure, she is not immune to falling apart like any other human. However, now that all eyes will be on Russia’s newest phenoms, Zagitova might have the breathing room she needs to pull ahead of the curve. A bloodbath of a season is coming up in which almost every Grand Prix event will feel like Worlds and I for one am utterly excited.

Looks like if your last name ends in va, you have a good chance of making it. But really, the Russian ladies are so strong now, I wouldn't be surprised if the GPF has a majority of Russian ladies.

Well said, Pete. Well said. The religious hypocrisy makes me gnash my teeth.

I’m not sure about Kihira, since she’s planning on including a quad. She wasn’t consistent with the 3A. Adding another super risky element could easily drop her out of GPF. She might get both more consistent by worlds (I hope so), but I doubt that will be the case in the fall.

Since the series started more than twenty years ago, the ladies' division this season is probably the deepest ever across the board.

I couldn't even begin to predict the Final Six. Suffice to say, everyone will need to bring their A+ game to even stand a chance of making the podium, and indeed, the final.

Do you think so? I've been wondering if--with more quad & triple axel attempts--we will start seeing more ladies' winners with more mistakes as we have for years with the men. The changes with the scoring system seem to discourage this. But then Kihira won a lot of events while missing the axel in the SP last season.

Also, while the battle at Skate America did produce three pretty fabulous pairs of programs last season, it is Skate America. New programs are new programs, and mistakes happen even in fields full of depth.

Not to be a pessimist. I expect some great events! Just to say that I think it's worth acknowledging that more risk is more risk.

I do, actually.

There are five to six medal contenders at each event. That Team Eteri rely on their technical content, and that Korstornaia, Shcherbakova, and Trusova are brand new to the senior international level, her skaters usually make an immediate impact in establishing the pecking order.

Seven triple free skates are pretty commonplace now. So owning something extra like a triple axel or a quad, and getting comfortable with it from the outset, is always going to help.

Keep in mind, too, that some of the skaters will have already tested their program at one of two local competitions and Challenger Series events prior to the Grand Prix.

As the great Tamara Moskvina says, "Those who risk, drink champagne."

I'm looking forward to an exciting season.

They usually come in prepared and with the most B.V. Very likely to hit the triples.

Kostornaia didn't bring the big jumps last season. Scherbakova & Trusova each presented one "watered down" LP that went clean and took falls in their other JGP and at the JGPF. With the exception of Anna at the JGPF, they won or medaled anyway because like the men, they brought in big points.

Guts, absolutely. Making an immediate impact? I think very likely. But considering the difficulty that is in Trusova & Scherbakova's A game, I don't think it would be surprising if we have big mistakes on big elements and/or less than A game early in the season. (I do expect them to go for the big jumps as they have a lot to prove as first-year seniors). I wouldn't be shocked if Trusova went totally solid in an early event. She is a go-getter.
