ISU Grand Prix Assignments 2018/19 season

Eunsoo Lim has been passed over so many times, I really hope she gets a spot, I also find it a bit frustrating how Hanul Kim who was 13th at Olympics and then 15th at Worlds doesn't have a single spot yet.

I'd like to see them both get one. Eunsoo is the highest ranked lady without two berths from last season, and Hanul is the highest ranked lady from last season's SB list without even one spot. Both were skipped over for other athletes. Hanul had a rougher go in her Challenger so there is an argument for other ladies as well; but I'd like to see SC invite Eunsoo and NHK invite Hanul. It is not these ladies' fault that their federation could not afford to fund a GP right after hosting the Olympics.

Of course.

There are no guarantees in skating.

Just as nobody expected the Olympic Champion to fall apart in Milan.
Generally speaking, skating is a range of reasonable outcomes, e.g., Alina's collapse lead to Kaetlyn, a skater with comparable technical content and PCS marks, winning; it didn't lead to Natasha McKay winning.

Three spots requires two top-tier skaters who both skate well. Canada has exactly two top-tier skaters in the ladies' discipline, and nobody else within spitting distance of them.

Eunsoo Lim is probably the most deserving, so I wouldn’t be upset if she were picked. But when it comes to my personal preference of who I would like to see at the event (which is of course most important :p), I’d pick Starr Andrews.

Please don't put words into my mouth, thanks

I...didn't?

You responded to my noting that Canada keeping three spots in ladies was always impossible without Kaetlyn by saying that nobody expected Alina's Milan meltdown, which would appear to be saying that you never know what will happen (if that's not what you meant, I'm unclear what that was supposed to mean).

My rejoinder is that while plenty of things can happen, there are certain viability thresholds. Canadian skaters other than Kaetlyn and Gabby simply do not have the technical base/PCS to make the top ten at Worlds even in a chaotic field.

I repost myself from the Canadian ladies thread:

Gabby writes on her IG that she's taking a break from training to focus on her mental health. Get well soon Gabby!!!<3

I hope she gets the help she needs and that she can get back to skating, if that's what she wishes. I'm glad more and more people are being open about this issue, so that more and more people dare to come forward. No one should struggle with these things alone. My thought is that Gracie being open can help many.

If I were part of the Canadian fed, right now I'd be promising Kaetlyn Osmond a car, a pony, a lifetime supply of chocolate, anything to come back in time for Worlds. I'm not saying the other ladies don't have promise, but promise isn't going to help them keep Worlds spots. Even if Gabby is much better by then, it would be a heavy burden on her shoulders.
They might!!!

Only one JGPF entry for Japan. Seems like it has been a long, long, while since that has happened.
Yeah, this wasn't their best year, despite coming third in the total medal count -- fifth ranked by type of medal, since they won no gold medals.

It’s definitely a rebuilding year for them in ladies. All their top junior ladies from the last few years have moved up. Yokoi has the most potential but can’t skate a clean short. None of the debutantes this year made much of an impression unfortunately ?

Japan has had non stop stars in singles skating for a while, they were due for an olympic cycle of rebuilding on the junior level, plus with the talent in the current crop of senior women, and Hanyu/Uno. I think Japanese skating will be ok.

The ladies all just flocked up into seniors. Kihira sure started off her senior career with a bang.

I feel like the Japanese junior men, though, are on their way up again. At least four Japanese guys had a shot at the Final this season and brought their triple axels. And the rule changes are helping Shimada (and probably Kagiyama as well). Kagiyama, Shimada, and Sumoto--that would be a pretty solid team if they could all go to Junior Worlds, which they can't. But it should be an interesting battle to make that team this year. (Including anyone who is at home).

Kinda the end of the last light of Mao boom? Having Hanyu and Shoma as their inspirations, Jr men's field looks a bit more promising than Jr ladies' field.

And she might still say no. She might just not be up for the training and mental preparation, and possibly no one can force her to be.

I'm sure that federations put pressure on skaters to continue competing - believe that is why Chan competed in 2018.

But, they don't have the right to hold skaters hostage.

Which is why the poster you’re responded suggested bribing her. Everybody is aware they can’t make her do anything, so saying “they can’t hold her hostage” is neither here nor there.

I knew Elena was going to withdraw, just surprised she waited until the last minute. Too bad, someone else could have had a chance. She was clearly not competition ready at the Russian Cup.

Ugh, USFS probably won't replace Radionova. Hopefully there's someone close that can take the spot.

Also wondering if Skate Canada is planning to replace Choi? Seems like the sub should have been announced by now ...

I didn't actually suggest it. :D I just said (jokingly) that they're probably very tempted.

:fragile: about Elena -- I'm not surprised, but still sad. about Karen.
