Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir # 47: Come What May...

I’m not certain but from the pics on tumblr it looks like the entry and exit are the same but she only has one leg on his shoulders rather than two?

If they've been leant on to change it rather than it actually being an organic evolution of their artistic vision (lol) then I hope they spent half their exhibition whirling around the ice in that position just for the hell of it :p they're retiring, it won't matter!

Count me in as disappointed. Oh well. If it looks like the one in the Perfection vid, I'm ok with it, I guess (Just curious as how the entry lift would be now) I've been quite satisfied with the changes they've made at Nationals so I hope they fine tuned those...and the modified lift still sets the overall tone of MR. That's what's important.

Whatever the reason(s) for lift change, we just have to go along with it. At least the FD at Nationals is available on YouTube for our viewing pleasure.

On a side note, after watching the Roxanne documentary, I'm even more pleased to know why they've chosen it and believe in it as their final dance (urgh, it's making me teary eyed)

It truly is a piece that speaks (display) what makes them - V/M - in all these 20 years in less than 4 minutes.

My hope is that they put out the best skates they'll treasure forever and everlasting happy memory of what will be of their last competitive skating career. (I will be among many who will probably shed a few tears in those final 2 skates. They will too, I think)

I’m actually so bitter and upset about this. I assume No other team has gotten feedback like this except V/M. I’m so tired of the narrative that V/M’s programs aren’t good enough just because they don’t fit a specific asthetic. I’m not fond of the music but choreographically it’s a beautiful program that they skate beautifully well.

But why? It makes no sense to me. They’ve been scoring more than well with that lift all season. And it wasn’t “aesthetically” unpleasing before why all of a sudden? I’m afraid they got rid of that dynamic element just for a chance at gold when it might dampen rather than help. I don’t know, we’ll see. Maybe they’ll go back to the old version for individual event. Sigh I think I’ve done enough venting for today.

I'm one of those who preferred the modified goose dismount they performed at the 2010 Olympics over the jump dismount they had earlier. While the earlier dismount was athletically impressive, it didn't fit the overall aesthetic of Mahler as well as the dismount where she fell and he caught her, imo. Hopefully that is what has happened here, as well.

I don’t understand it either. I honestly don’t think it was V/M’s preference to do this..if it was I think we’d have seen it at nationals with all the other changes. Why would anyone make changes to debut at the Olympics? I’m 100% positive someone strongly suggested this and they are trying to do whatever it takes to get that gold. I’m honestly not sure if it’ll help in the end but I can’t blame them for changing it. They’ve worked their ass off for 2 years for this and if the lift becomes a scapegoat then you know they’ll have regrets. And I think their main objectives of these games is not to have regrets and close out their careers in a manner that satisfies them.

Yeah I preferred the Vancouver Goose too. And the Worlds Farrucas too, come to think of it. I'll reserve judgement.

This does make me roll my eyes just a little harder at the narrative that P/C are the true innovators though, if by doing something more dynamic, more edgy, more outside the current trend of flowy lyricism and open/non existent holds they have to change their elements.

I think one of the reasons it seems like VM are the only team that gets feedback like this is because they are one of the few teams that can actually change parts of lifts between competitions so easily. Like that Mahler example -- really how many teams could have pulled off a change like that when going for the first Oly games? Maybe other teams get the same sort of feedback, but can't pull off the change in time so just take the lower scores.

The new lift just isn't wow or fit the character of the piece like the Carmen lift did.

I'm actually really upset about this. I was okay about them losing, but I really just don't want them to bastardize their artistic vision. Just let the program be.

I also had the same thought as well. However I figured it’s the Olympics and there are some top level teams out there and i’m sure that some of them would make necessary changes if they’ve gotten feedback so it doesn’t jeopardize a medal.

I completely realize how I sound..in full disclosure i’m so incredibly frustrated as a V/M fan. I felt like they finally gelled this program at Nats and to make a lift change so close to the Olympics is just ugh! It had such star power..who knows maybe that’s why they were told to change it. I mean I could end up loving it but so help me god if they get a lower GOE on that lift i’m going to lose my mind.

I read a headline that said it was changed to make it more “family friendly” for the Games.

I really don't think we should read much into the changing of the lift. I always found the entry spectacular, but I also found the entry woefully underrated. Black flip on his shoulders while both are gliding on ice? Like hello? Why weren't more people gasping and talking about that?

Also compared to 2014, V/M are way more confident, fit and strategic. In 2014, I was grimacing the whole time I watched their SD and FD because I was worried about them committing a mistake. They proved me wrong. This time, they look so prepared and there's no way they haven't discussed every possibility with their coaches and B2Ten team. I feel like they can take anything that comes their way. The only thing that worries me is biased predetermined judging. (Again, is Rodgers really going to be the US judge??)

Heavens, is Rogers really rumoured to be the US judge?! I will never ever ever get over 4CCs. Lower than all 3 American teams. On Prince. 7 points lower than Chock and Bates, of all people, on the free. *8.75* Utter crock, she should've been pulled up for it. Didn't she tag team with Hurth on their Worlds SD as well?

All this talk of predetermined scores, suspect judges (known to (blatantly) underscore actual performance of skaters - not just to v/m, etc), "suspicious" PR (raised eyebrows on this one, talk about paranoia )...is enough to have me ranting in the privacy of my own home. And the Oly games haven't even started. :p If it spills on this board, well, you all know how that will go. Honestly, I'm tired of all this. Pretty sure others, especially those in the discipline, are too. Having said that, what can we do, except watch things unfold as they may. Maybe we will be surprised. Or not. It is what it is.

CBCs coverage just started and they showed a brief clip of V/M getting off a bus in PyeongChang with their luggage.

Looks really cold there.

I hope they keep warm during the opening ceremonies. Too bad the Canadian athletes don't have heated parkas like the US team (at least I have not heard otherwise).

I'm not gonna lie but it's funny how petty some non-V/M fans are on here. Y'all stay in your own lane and go talk shit about them elsewhere. I mean, this is a fan thread, not a "Lets criticize every single part of V/M thread" lol
It certainly sets the tone of this site when even a moderator is blatantly biased against V/M and for P/C and comes in this thread being snarky, Which is totally professional and mod-like. (Wish I could block him, how is this person a mod?! when he acts the exact opposite of one?)
