From Russia with love [#28]: Autumn to Winter 2017

I always liked U/V, I thought they had great potential when they debuted, but I think she has got to tall for him. I thought had some star quality about her, I hope the info about the injury is untrue, is not a nice way for a career to end. On a separate note it’s nice to see Atakhanova back, if all the above is true.

It is supposed to be a tryout, so it is probably not a done deal yet.

Today, Thursday, the Russian Figure Skating Federation held a press conference on the upcoming European Championships. Federation President Gorshkov said that the Russian team for Europeans is unchanged from what they announced at Nationals. He said that Evgenia Medvedeva is back to full training and will compete.
Reports (in Russian) can be found here:

Apparently most skaters are now at a training camp in Novogorsk in order to prepare for the event.

Anna Sherbakova’s SP at Moscow Cup, it’s her first outing after summers injury (fractured her leg on 3Lo)
https://youtu.be/R75PG1NZnJ8

Thank you so much! I hadn't seen any updates on Shcherbakova for a while and was thinking of asking you if you had any scoop. She is far and away my favorite in this age group, as Proklova was in hers, and I was worried her career would follow a similar arc. I really hope she can stay healthy and dominate next season. Her musicality, ability to interpret a wide range of music styles, and natural dance ability are stunning, and IMHO her carriage is superior as well.

According to Betina Popova's and Ksenia Rumiantseva's instagram and facebook their whole group got kicked out of their rink and have no ice as of today :( . They've been having these problems all season long (no ice time) and there are 3 junior couples that have to prepare for Junior Nats.
It's unbelievable how Sambo 70 is treating their ice dancers.

That said, now I am even more impressed with how much Popova/Mozgov managed to improve this season.

No one needs to be suprised at russia treating its ice dancers bad. Russia has moved to ladies. It’s ice dance program is on its last legs. It must be written about. When did Russia stop caring about ice dance? When did it lose its mojo? Did the emergence of Sotnikova and tuktamisheva and liptnitskaia and even leonova and then Medvedeva and zagitova and so so many others! All the polinas - the early polinas. Agafanova shelepen korobeynikova

Ice dance is not dead. They have wonderful teams coming up. There must be a solution

We have to consider that because of break ups, injuries and retirements Russia lost nearly every junior team from the 2010 to 2014 generation, that medalled at Junior Worlds. There is a lot of talent coming up in Russian ice dance in the next few years. Let's hope for the best :)

Russian ice dance dead? No way! These things cycle around, eventually, w/ all the disciplines -- except maybe U.S. Pairs... :p :sheep: :slinkaway

Sending their best junior to moving to senior teams to debureuil isn’t even considered! It’s forbidden to even discuss. So if you can’t even talk about having a team move to dubreuil than no one cares about ice dance in Russia anymore. I

They also lost the whole 2014 to 2018 generation of juniors moving to seniors too. You have all of 2010-2018 of one team only being able to win only bronze at gp events which is s/b- that’s still competing! It’s shows the program is dead.

This is almost worse than US pairs. Dance in Russia I’m afraid is no longer being supported. It can’t cycle up. Because there is no support. It’s all for ladies. All ice dance resources moves to ladies.

Why isn't possible for Ice Dance teams to move to Montreal ? Let's say just one. Everyone would benefit : Marie-France can have the russian judges advantages, and the Russian fed can have Gadbois' favour and expertise. The last 3 World titles and Euro titles are from Montreal. Sometimes you need ONE team only to dominate in your country for let's say 4/5 years. By that time you can take care of the upcoming teams.

EDIT : Has the Vika/Nikita or Elena/Ruslan situation made it worse for team to go overseas ?

The reason why this group doesn’t have ice is because their rink is being used for Euros.
The situation is more complicated, afaik, they don’t train at Megasport constantly, just use that rink at times. Other Sambo-70 groups (not Eteri’s and Tsareva’s, who work at Khrustalny) train there as well but Sambo-70 have found some ice for other groups at other rinks this week, just not for Rumyantseva’s (that’s what I read at Russian boards at least)
The problem isn’t new, they had these problems from the beginning of the season and during the off season as well.
That being said, if she knew that Euros will be held at “their” home rink and was aware of the problems, she should have started thinking about it earlier..

I am quite sure Popova/Mozgov are in the Sambo-70/Krystalniy club, and the lack of ice they are ref. to is at Krystalniy... I did not think they were talking about Megasport, as this rink is fully dedicated to Euros this week, and no-one in the right mind would presume that they can have group practices at a rink where an international competition is taking place.... (let me know if i am wrong, though).

I didn't know about that.
But according to the social media of the skaters and coaches, this problem has been going on for the entire season so far just as @Ka3sha said.
I just want Popova to do well, I have a soft spot for her and her entertaining OTT moments :respec:

They send two people with some of the worst work ethic in Skating to North America and they blame the horrible results on training in North America rather than the total lack of work ethic! Need to send a team with great work ethic to Montreal and also not be so nationalistic!

Rumyantseva’s group is a part of Sambo-70 club but they don’t train at Khrustalny ice rink (Eteri’s and Tsareva’s rink)

... except...... when "Russia/Russians" are "bitten in the butt by a roasted hen", they will accomplish.. If "russian ice dance" becomes a critical issue, like it did with "russian ladies" and "Slutskaya being called truck-driver by western fans and press", the whole Russia will be turned inside out for few years, and soon there will be champions. I doubt the current Russian Junior Teams will be let loose on their own device after Olympics. Olympics will pass, and some serious work is planned.... :D

And where are the "superior" Canadian teams from that JGPF now?

While those teams are finished everyone is beating down the door of Gadbois and that will benefit Canada post virtue moir retirement.

I know this is the hope! That Russian dance in its lowest moment will create a ladies like renaissance when all new people can come in and create new success.
