We will watch, but less devoted fans will not be lured into it being much of “a qualifying competition” for the Olympics.

Idle question: would the rationale for leaving off Ross also work for Wagner?

You really think his skate will be just a happy memory for him or the people who watched it now? The memory will always be accompanied by first the Olympic non-selection and now the final insult of not even being named first alternate.

I pray Ross is able to remember the joy and treasure the medal but I'm not sure....

The decision was going to be controversial anyways, but to me it looks like the fed followed the established criteria, which were published way in advance and known.
And IMO, it's a good idea to put less weight on Nationals and more on the rest of the season/s like other feds (e.g Japan fed) are doing.

That said, 2nd alternate seems harsh and I hope Miner gets worlds in the same way Higuchi got worlds over Sakamoto.

Well they did randomly knock Brown off the world team for Aaron the last Olympic/World selection, so I guess there is precedent.

What is the point of Nationals now? This is completely different than the 2014 Wagner/Nagasu decision. Adam Rippon doesn't have the BOW resume Wagner did in 2014. Yes, it's better than Miner's but it's not that outstanding to justify this decision.

Ross still got a silver medal, same as he would have at any other nationals.

If they had to take the podium, he probably would have been cheated out of it by judges trying to manipulate the podium. That didn't happen, because the podium is not the team, and he deserves his silver.

Like others, I can’t say I disagree with the Oly team (the whole “body of work” thing), but to not even name Ross as 1st alternate is nuts. Thanks for the zero support there USFSA, reminding him that he’s choked a lot.

I guess a consolation is that Ross likely didn’t expect any team placements out of this Nats. The fact that he skated so well is always something he should be proud of. The placements are out of his hands, but the fact that he had such great performances, that’ll always be his.

Gymnastics doesn't name their teams based solely on Nationals/Trials and they're doing fine (attendance wise anyway, not...with other things recently). The dramatics surrounding fans and viewership is ridiculous.

If there's an injury and Jason gets to go, he needs to send all the flowers to Boyang Jin. Without him being in the GPF there'd be even less justification for being first alternate (I think his contributing to the US having three spots at 2017 Worlds did play a role too though).

I understand that the body of work comes into play so that, as Auxier et al keep stressing, the medal favorites still have a chance to be on the team in the event of one bad skate or minor injury or whatever. But I don't really think Rippon is a medal favorite or top 5 favorite. And one can make the argument that they need someone like Rippon potentially for the team event, but if Adam (or anyone besides Nathan) skates the LP against a Japanese man, a Russian, a Canadian, and a Chinese man, it's probably going to be tough to compete for anything higher than 4th on a good day.

I think the qualifying system should be more specific or exact. The South Korean and Italian and German federations use some kind of total points earned from specific events, including Nationals, in determining their teams. That would also have its flaws because of extremely lenient/strict technical panels internationally, and the increased likelihood of manipulation at Nationals if there is a close race in scores heading into the event. So, I guess similar to everything else in this sport, no system of qualification is going to be perfect.
