@FSWer everyone in every kind of skating starts in learn-to-skate lessons. The basic skills in skating - stroking, edges, crossovers, turns - are the same in every kind of skating. So every famous skater started out learning those basic skills and working hard to become good at them. No one steps on the ice and is a great skater right away, even skaters that are famous now.
It usually isn't until after skaters learn the basics that they think about whether they want to do singles, pairs, or ice dancing. Everyone learns the same things at the start.
