From Russia with love [#28]: Autumn to Winter 2017

MOSCOW, Dec 19 - R-Sport. Two-time world champion in figure skating Evgenia Medvedeva will miss the Russian championship in St. Petersburg to concentrate on preparing for the European Championships in Moscow, a source familiar with the situation told R-Sport agency.
<snip>
... it was decided that Evgenia would miss the Russian championship and continue the planned preparations for the European Championship, taking into account the fact that just a week ago the athlete was removed from the cast and the leg should be taken care of," the source added.

The Russian Championship, which will be one of the stages of selection for the 2018 Olympic Games, will be held December 21-24 in St. Petersburg. Earlier, Medvedeva withdrew from the Grand Prix Final, held December 7-9 in Japan's Nagoya, due to an ankle injury. The European Championship will be held January 17-20 in Moscow.

Although I will miss watching her at the RN, I am relieved that she is not rushing it, and she is taking her time to get ready for the Euros. Best wishes to Zhenya for a full recovery and great success at the Euros and the Olympics.

Since when does Gorshkov gossip? He's usually the last to know about everything. :cold:

Ilinykh/Shibnev might have split up
https://rsport.ria.ru/figure_skating/20171220/1130340127.html

Aleksandr Gorshkov: “Russian figure skating federation isn’t sure if this team still exists”

Maybe they came to the realization that the difference in their levels was just too great? Maybe they've other prospects for Illinykh lined up? It's just a pity that their better male ice dancers seem to only be comfortable with working with their girlfriends or best friends rather than a bright partner. Is the pressure is too much, better to skate with someone less demanding? Wow, where have all the Platovs and Kostomarovs gone? Oh well.

Or maybe male dancers want partners who actually show up to practice.

Reminds me of the Red Hot Chili Peppers logo, without the symbol in the middle. I guess they can't have any symbols so a 1-minute Photoshop job will have to suffice.

Ruslan liked a post about the Ilinykh/Shibnev breakup on Instagram...I don't really care about ice dance, but I thought it was amusing :D

What has he ever done to you? :drama:
 I think they'd be great together. She's an excellent skater and can sell a program like no other Russian dancer. Motivation has been her problem. Since she and Nikita broke up, her partners haven't been near her level. Not everyone is a Savchenko who can take a partner with lesser skills and help elevate them to the point they can be a top team. The :drama: surrounding the split, both with Nikita and Morozov played a factor. But, if she teamed with an equal partner and wants to skate, I think they could be great. Of course, it all depends on what he wants to do as well. If he wants to continue after Bobrova retires, it would be rather pointless for him to pick a junior level skater. He may continue one more quad, but I'd suspect that's all. Going with a partner who already has the skills would be a more efficient move. But, it's Russia so who knows what will happen.

What has he ever done to you? :drama:

Who is he going to skate with though and remain within the top three?

Some thoughts.

1. Ryazanova? - Can she still skate, did you look at her when she skated with Takchenko?
2. Sinitsina? - She is not leaving her headcase boyfriend.
3. Lozko? - What? seriously, like WHAAATTT!!
4. Betina? - Em,...like she's going to leave her boyfriend? Hubba, hubba Mosgov? Even their tattoos match :scream:
5. Vasilisa? - yeah, can you see Morozov letting her out of his sight?

He is either going to skate with maybe a Rizanova in shows until Katya decides her mind and if she doesn't they're just going to retire together. Just my thoughts.

You are so right, you stole the words right out of Carol Lane's mouth. :D Bobrova might also put off her baby plans for the next four years especially if the results in PC are less then satisfactory.

On paper, or on tour, sure. Day to day, hoping her motivation lasts more than a week at a time? She's simply not trustworthy about long-term focus and putting in the work. This is a guy who worked his butt off to come back from what for many would have been a career-ending injury, and then through his partner's injury and that verfukt-up Meldonium ban.

Well, then that would be the problem of the coaches to work out. She only seemed to lack motivation that last season with Ruslan when Igor gave her those craptastic programs. Personally, I wouldn't blame the girl. I'm not even saying I want this because I don't see how they fit together. But, a big but, she can skate and she can dance better than all those workaholic ice dance girls we have in Russia right now. But in all honesty, I'm really looking forward to their juniors. Their current squad is pretty meh to me.

Her motivation problems existed with Zhulin, Morozov Shpilband and every stint with Kustarova. Zhulin and Kustarova even called her out in the press for lack of work. The only times Elena had motivation were the months leading up to the Olympics and her first year with Zhiganshin.

Really, I guess if my math Olympics partner didn't understand the difference amongst the adjacent side, opposite side and hypotenuse of a triangle I'd get pretty bummed too.

But honestly, if you read between the lines more you'd pick up the details you're clearly missing. It's not a matter of being unmotivated, she just hasn't had a compatible partner. Katsalapov wasn't one and Soloviev definitely isn't one either. He doesn't dance and neither does Katsalapov, but they are great skaters. Russian ice dance needs something more.

Work ethic is portable. If you need perfect circumstances to motivate you to work hard, then you don't really have a work ethic.

The ice dance world is too small to have too long of a checklist in a partner. At a certain point, you need to "make do" with what you've got available. And at a certain level of talent, results become more about how hard you're willing to work than how much natural talent you have.

That quote is much funnier to read than I bet Gorshkov intended it to sound.
Well, literal translation:
“The situation with Ilinykh and Shibnev is complicated. Russian Figure Skating Federation still isn’t sure if they are going to skate woth each other”
