Songs You Dislike and/or Detest

Everything by Bob Dylan.

It's unfortunate that real singers like Linda Ronstadt and Julie Andrews are no longer able to sing, but Bob Dylan is able to record "music" to assault us with. I was wondering if maybe he has already lost his voice, but just drags his fingernails down a chalkboard and gets the same sound as when he "sings".

I respect Bob Dylan as a songwriter, but I can't take his voice, either. Re: Julie Andrews, we were fortunate enough to see her in concert in August 2008. She did an eight city US tour, about the time her autobiography Home came out. She sang in her lower range, and was accompanied by younger singers through much of the show. In the second half of the concert, she narrated her latest children's book @ the time, Simeon's Gift. Even though she can no longer sing in her amazing soprano range, it was a thrill (and dream come true) to see & hear her!

As far as "Santa Baby" goes, I never saw it as sexualizing old Santa but in the lines of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" i.e. that it was about the person's actual crush/partner. But, I'm not a fan of either song, I much prefer the traditional Christmas carols. The worst song for me is Christmas Shoes. I'd rather hear Paul McCartney ad nauseum rather than even the opening lines of that song.

For non Christmas songs, I think Carol Channing had talent and charisma but I personally never identified with it, and her style grated on my nerves.

It is really hard to destroy Silent Night, Holy Night. Like really hard because I love the song

BUT MY GOD, the Stevie Nicks cover I heard tonight made me want to stab my eyeballs out. At first I thought it was Miley Cyrus, but it was even worse than Miley could possibly make it.

Then the station identified it as Nicks singing. There was nothing that would make me voluntarily listen to it again. I would have to change the station.

Nick's version of Silent Night has been torturing us since the late 80's. It is truly awful.

I hate the song "Let Her Go" by Passenger. Not sure why it gets radio play.

My own personal hate song is about cannibalism after a mining disaster. It was a bona fide top 40 song called Timothy. I get nauseous thinking about it.

Love it! We used to be so scared of that song. And since adulthood it has bugged me that the melody and the singing are so pretty to have such stupid words. Couldn't they have written a love song?

Stupid title, horrid lyrics and awful melody. Whenever someone sings this on a talent show, I know they're an idiot because of all the songs of James Brown to pick...they choose this piece of dreck!!

Yeah. I have always wondered (and I'm not going to get this exactly right without looking up) what he means by "a woman or a girl". Huh? Pick one.

But it's so neat in person, everybody swaying with lighters (uh, now with cell phone lights wouldn't have the same impact!!!!) and singing along.

As much as I loved the Beatles is how much I loathe their post-Beatle output. McCartneys stuff was saccharine dreck, it's not just Imagine that sucked. Harrison's What is Life wasn't bad if you ignored the lyrics.

I like a lot of Paul/Wings not on the pop chart songs. Hate "My Love" (sorry Linda).

ETA: After reading PeterG's post upthread, I just remembered I don't like The Who either. I really couldn't stand Tommy (movie or album), and I think the movie was a waste of perfectly good pinball machines and cans of baked beans.

But, yeah, we were in high school when Tommy was out and the music was SO LOUD (and the whole thing so stupid) we almost left the theater.

I can't think of any Who songs I liked either.

Okay, who started all the "Timothy" talk. I only heard that song once, maybe like 10 years ago on a radio show, yet all of a sudden its been playing in my head all day like I just heard it yesterday!

I have it on a Hits of the 70's CD. I can't listen to it in the dark though. I have to go turn on the t.v and all the lights now!!!!

All of Tom Petty's songs. Actually, the songs might be okay...even great. Just let a singer sing them instead of the shrieking-cat writer of the songs "sing" them...

The Waiting

How can we agree on half of these and be completely opposite on some of the others? Tom Petty = radio station change..............Bridge Over Troubled Water = sigh.

For a long time, I didn't care for Michael McDonald's voice, especially in the song "I Keep Forgettin'." Otherwise I like the Doobie Brothers music. @ this point I've gotten over my dislike for his voice, and it's all OK by me.

Did you ever "see" him sing (on t.v.) back in the day? Looked like his lips were glued to the big microphone.

I never cared for Joe Tex: The songs I remember are "I Gotcha" and "Ain't Gonna Bump No More." I couldn't believe either one were hits. I'd rather listen to that guy who talks his way through "Convoy" and I dislike that one too.

I hate Sweet Child O Mine! But I love so many other GnR songs...so many better ones than that overplayed ear bleeder. Overplaying has killed many songs.

Reading all these posts made me think of some I hate (change the radio station worthy) last night.

Why I thought of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", I don't know. Which reminded me of "The Night Chicago Died". "MacArthur Park". Any working class story songs like John Cougar/Mellencamp or Springsteen.

I don't listen to popular music. I would probably recognize an Adele or Taylor Swift song in passing and probably not like them. I'd have to look at all my 60s and 70s compilation albums, tapes and CDs to list the ones I would skip over. (I'll pop some CDs on while I'm cooking and let you know. ha ha)

Right, but if you look at the bottom right hand corner of every post there are three buttons "Like", "+Quote" and "Reply". If you press "+Quote" of every post you want to comment on when you finally come to reply they will all be in one post which makes it easier on everyone trying to read a thread.

OH I loved that song. It appealed to every cheesy melodramatic cell in my body.

Along with Earth Angel and (drumroll) MacArthur Park. The original Richard Harris version, not the disco version. I love them both.
