Theresa Weld did it as well, winning first in 1914 (first year of the event!), finishing 2nd after the break for WWI, then coming back after the 1918 Flu epidemic cancellation in 1919 to win from 1920 - 1924.
It is true to say it wasn't common and it's equally true to say, as @carriecmu0503 pointed out, that it has become A LOT more common.
Nine ladies have accomplished this since 1914 (5 of the years since then did not have a national champion for one reason or another), and of the nine, four have been in the last 10 years.
