Rossano: Current Replay Systems Not Up To Task of Insuring Accurate Calls

Given that there are fans who can't tell the different jumps apart, some who can't tell a triple from a double or a quad, or know the requirements for step sequences and levels, while some fans not only can identify all the elements but know every detail of the scoring system, with every combination in between, I don't think it's particularly controversial to say that not all fans can tell a UR in real life but some can.

Though I really don't care if the fans can tell. I'm talking about the tech panel. And I'm proposing that if they have to pour over the screen with a magnifying glass in slo-mo then even if there was technically a UR, it's not blatant enough to ding in the scoring. I'm also assuming they are trained enough to be able to tell a UR at all.

IMO the problem with this article is that the author is approaching it with a very strict definition of "accurate". Absolute precision in measurement is critical in building certain structures or systems, like spacecraft. But the same standard of precision is not really necessary, or even realistic, in measuring skating movements.

For example, he proposes that only 3 degrees over or under the stated amount of rotation should be allowed for a jump to count or not to get e or !. That infinite amount of precision is excessive. The systems already in use can usually tell when there's huge under- or over-rotation, and that's fine - but honestly, does anyone want to sit around and wait while the judges and TCs and referees try to figure out if a jump was within 3.1 or 3.0 degrees of the required rotation? I don't.

And as others have pointed out, the cost of the technology to be able to get that degree of precision is going to be huge, not to mention the cost of training people to use it correctly.

In this case, the context is a history of obsessively bashing certain skaters for URs (skaters who just happen to be US rivals of her favorites), even when the actual judges sometimes call the jumps differently.
:wall: The judges and Technical Panel don't get to see the broadcast feed while marking the skaters.
