Evgeniya Medvedeva: When life gets tough, the tough get going (russian wording: when it gets difficult, try harder/due more).

18 year old Olympic medalist is speaking about handling stress, her schedule and beauty tips (March 25, 2018)

Editorial/Vogue: We are meeting with Evgeniya Medvedeva at the studio in the city centre. Yesterday evening she arrived from Korea, and late next night she is flying to Europe. She will remain in Moscow exactly 30 hours. On her schedule are an interview and a photo shoot with Nike, meeting with the fans, and an appearance on the national TV channel. The next vacation is planned it seems not until the middle of April; time to eat? – in transit; time to sleep? – sleeping is for the weak. How does she manage such lifestyle? Only her mother knows. Zhenya complains not about such turn of fortune, she does not believe in it. She says we forge our own fortune and misfortune, and with a great level of maturity follows her own motto “when life gets tough, try harder”.

At the photo shoot, yesterday’s school-girl, for 5 hours straight holds everyone on edge, the photographer, the stylist, the producer, and the three assistants. This girl knows exactly what style looks good on her and how to pose for a shot, and uses an eye-liner better than any makeup artist.

Before each skate Evgeniya puts on make up only herself, mentally prepares by listening to k-pop music, ties her skates always left foot first, and then steps on the ice. “I don’t entrust myself to anyone, even for a manicure I have my own specialist. During the month spent in Korea everything grew out, but even then I waited.” – admits Zhenya.

At first it is hard to believe that she is just 18. But Zhenya is not just a world record making machine, she is still a brittle girl that weights only 43 kilos. Like every fine lady she wants a good figure and to eat chocolate. She admires Princess Di, crazy about surprises, wishes someday for a gift of Cartier, and to a question “what’s your ideal vacation” she replies “ideal vacation is in my room. I remove stress with silence”. Needless to say, as a little girl she dreamed not of becoming the pride of the nation but simply a princess.

In the middle of the photo-session, she stops and pulls out 2 heavy silver medals from her flower-laced reticule, to the amusement of the whole crew bewildered as if they’ve seen a ghost. And that is Zhenya for you. Amazing how in this body of Thumbelina lives a child and a great champion, all in one. Finally we decided to gave the young lady a questionnaire and each answer is just a proof of her character.

What gives you confidence in your appearance? – Black Eyeliner.

High hills or flats? – Tennis shoes.

Where would you want to be right now? – Somewhere far from all… Ireland for example.

Do you prefer to practices or to competition? – To compete.

Where do you keep your medals? – On the wall rack.

More nervous before a date or a competition? – Before a date. I never feel nervous before a competition.

What is your daily schedule like? – Wake up at 8:30; eat my oatmeal; 10 am – gym, then all day at the rink, two 1-1/2 hr. sessions on the ice, 3 hours in the gym, 6 days a week, 1 day off.

If you were not a figure skater who would you be? – I just discovered curling....

Who would you like to look like @ 30 or 40? – To look as respectable as Angelina Jolie.

If you can have any plastic surgery what would you get? – A nose job.

What do you wear to practice? – Only black. Because the ice is white.

Don't ever change your nose, Evgenia!
She is lovely as she is now. But if she wants to adjust her nose a bit, it won't be a problem. It's not going to be something major, just adjusting the tip of her nose and I think it's fairly minor. If she likes it then it is ok.

I think she's gorgeous as is, but it's her nose. Also, it was asked which she would do if she was going to -- so it may not be something she is serious about. I would probably answer my nose as well, but I have no intention of doing it.

I hope that weight is a typo...that's scary. I love her and don't want to see her disappear!

I don't usually like to comment on skater weights, but I don't think 43 kilos is unreasonable for her frame/height. When I was 18, I was active (not competitive skater active though), and at 160 cm--which was/is my full adult height--weighed just under 42 kilos, and definitely did not look anorexic (nor was I, in fact gobbled with gusto anything that crossed my path!). Very similar frame to Miss Evgenia and didn't have to do anything extreme to maintain that size even into the early 20's.

I have the same built as Medvedeva, and was 5'6 and well under 100 lb at her age. Barely got into 100s in my twenties and thirties. Not much in the curve department. I always looked petite but healthy. I am about 115 lb now, in my mid forties, after two kids. I eat everything, obviously within reason. And yeah, I am very active with daily running and frequent yoga. So sometimes it is what it is. I've seen a lot of frail-looking skaters. Medvedeva doesn't look frail to me. She looks lean but strong.

Not trying to skinny shame her or imply she's anorexic, but 16.6 BMI is very underweight. I was a 17.2 at one point and I was a waif. And the "brittle girl" comment made me think of Miyahara/bone density worries.
