Knife attack in Solingen, Germany

Three people were killed and several injured after they were attacked with a knife at Solingen's 650th anniversary celebration. It seems that the attacker chose the victims at random. The attacker was also able to flee in the ensuing chaos. No known motive as of yet.

Well that's awful. Shades of the threat in Vienna though who knows why someone does this to others?

That's the age-old question and also a question I've been asking myself in general so often as of late.

I sure hope it wasn't another intelligence failure on Germany's part.

The suspected knife attacker from Solingen was supposed to be deported to Bulgaria last year. Corresponding reports by Die Welt and Der Spiegel were confirmed to the news agency dpa. According to the reports, the Syrian-born man had entered the European Union via Bulgaria and applied for asylum in Germany at the end of 2022, which was rejected.

According to the reports, the man had entered the EU via Bulgaria, so Bulgaria would have been responsible for the asylum procedure under the Dublin Convention. However, as he had absconded in Germany, he could not be transferred to Bulgaria in time. Germany was therefore responsible for his case and granted him subsidiary protection, as is usual for people from countries at civil war.

Very recently I've read an interview with Peter Neumann. He talked about, how terror attacks have changed, about the role of tiktok regarding radicalisation, that these days attackers are quite young, two thirds of them between 13 and 19, which used to be the exception ten years ago. He also underlined, that nowadays when lone wolves attack, ISIS tends to claim the attack.

Good news (relatively, as this shouldn't have happened): Eight other people were injured in the attack, some of them seriously; according to the hospital, all of them are now out of danger.

Is he? The article that I've read indicates that the suspect is seeking asylum which is a legal status under German law.

He was denied asylum and was about to be extradited back to Syria back in 2023, but he went into hiding or whatever and managed to stay.

What awful news. Thoughts with the dead and injured and their families. :(

Two people in this thread though telling on themselves with what they choose to post in the aftermath of horrific events like this. Not a word of sympathy for the victims and all about making their bigoted political points.

Anyone who votes for liberal parties has the blood of this attack and others like it on their hands.

I’m out of thoughts and prayers; show me deportations and enforcement of the law.

(Didn’t realize this was OTBT and not PI; maybe a mod can move this there or move the political posts there.)

This might come as a huge shock to you, but people are deranged and do bad things while being (a migrant/a POC/gay/a woman/trans) and so on.

It's not connected to that person's status as (a migrant/POC/gay/a woman/trans).
Statistics speak LOUDLY.

A couple of years ago a close friend of mine got nuts because one of her best friends was murdered by a truck driver from Morocco.
The only thing her friends and family were worried about after the horrible news came in was "not to instrumentalize her death for the right-wingers".
Dude, if it were my sister/friend/daughter whatever who just was MURDERED, BURNT and LEFT IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, my first priority would be to grieve for her.

I experienced the search for the girl first-hand because I was invited to the FB group which was dedicated to the search for her.
I will never forget that one post by one of those people: "Thank you Sophia, for bringing us together in a way we never thought possible!"
Yeah, but dear Sophia was already dead in this dude's truck at that exact moment.

THIS is what I consider distasteful.

What if her best friend was murdered by a Native-born person of color? Or Native-born White person? Where are the statistics that show that foreign-born POC commit more crimes than native-born ones? The only consistent statistics that cuts through all racial barriers is that males, whatever their color or sexual preference, commit more violent crimes than females.

You have a point there.

But the family and friends EXPLICITLY demanded (!!!!!!) not to "abuse this case for racism" before even saying that they were grieving.
And this is why I consider it ****ed up.

Morocco is a country where patriarchy is THE SHIT, also because of Islam.
I am seeing the Muslim families having bbqs in our parks all the time. The guys are cooking and the women are sitting all together, veiled and have nothing to say.

So that truck driver probably thought she was offering herself for him because she was wearing a top and a short skirt or shorts or whatever.
She declined and paid for it. With her ****ing life.
