Candeloro feels Hanyu will skate 2-4 more years

Hanyu should create a 4 year Master Plan to try and become three time OGM. It is a very long shot, but he is young enough to do it - no need for quintuples. Having 3 types of quads and a 4 axel would win it.

4axel; 4 loop; 4toe combo; 4toe; 4sal combo; 4 sal; 3axel combo

He could probably still do it with only four quads. His only competition would be from Nathan and Shoma (of course, things can change) and I don't see any of the junior men challenging any of the top seniors. Seemed like they could barely do average-quality triples...

4 years is a long time and will get harder on his body BUT we shall see how this unfolds. I think it would be exciting if he stays in the mix, and adds the quad axel for more technical content so he is not overtaken by men who might not have the component scores he does, but are including more quads and quad combinations.
As always with competitions of any kind, those who have not won the gold medal yet are analyzing what the gold medalist is doing to win, and figuring out their plan to beat the GM at some point. That is the way of sport.

Edit: remembering that Nathan Chen won the long program at the Olympics by several points over Hanyu. So the train is coming down the track.

Though Yuzu's free wasn't foot perfect. He missed a combo and lost 30% value on the 2nd toe. Comparing PBs, for now Nate's 6 quads didn't beat two of Yuzu's 3 quad programs (nor Javi's Boston free). And then last year's worlds free is still the world record by a lot of points with only 4. But I guess we'll see what this new scoring system will bring for everyone along with one less jumping pass.

In general though I don't think Yuzu has anything else to prove nor should feel like he needs a 3rd OGM. His responses about it seem very noncommittal. He's my favorite so I will always like to see him skate for as long as he wants, but he seems reeaally satisfied with what he's done at this point. I can see him around for 2 more years, but 4 is stretching it.

The Japanese media are probably the most probing and intense group on the planet. Go to an ISU event where he is skating, and they outnumber world press ten to one.

Any answer steered towards a yes in Beijing, would definitely place a huge amount of pressure on Team Yuzu's shoulders. At times, he only looks like he actually enjoys competing, once an event is actually done.

Remember when Midori Ito ONLY won silver in Albertville, how she apologised to her nation. Anything less than gold would be considered a humiliating failure.

Here's hoping if he does decide to continue, and with his own injuries and new rivals to consider, that he skates simply for the joy of it.

He only states his goal for now is to land the 4A in competition. He told his former coach to teach him coaching etc.. maybe he hasn’t decided about Beijing yet but maybe at the moment he might think of only 1-2 seasons at max.
