Can Avatars be made not-visible?

Is there any way to disable avatars so I don't see them? I've looked but I'm probably just blind.

If there isn't a way to disable them, could that possible be part of the upgrade?

This site looks different on a regular computer vs my iPad. The poster info section is large on my iPad but on a desktop computer it looks normal size. Perhaps that is why?
