Bolero Cup - Sheffield GBR - 5-6 September

Today Raul Bermejo is wearing a bright red boiler suit with a black garter round one thigh.

Layla Karnes is wearing shear palazzo pants that look like a toepick disaster waiting to happen.

Lewis Gibson is not wearing a kilt. :(

Juniors just finished and running ahead of schedule so senior FD starting at 1520 for anyone planning to watch the stream.

Very strong skate for Marler Davies/Black but this FD is not it. Lots of small bobbles for Slatter/Gregory unfortunately. Czech guys just can’t keep themselves from flipping their sisters’ skirts.

It looks like the scores aren't updating. Who won juniors?

R/A's free is kind of one-note, but I didn't hate it like I hated their last two FDs, so there's that.

It's Lilah who's got the kilt -- a short sparkly kilt, with a top that looks like it's growing up her torso and arms. :) Lewis needs a better costume -- this one is mostly just dark with a few sparkles. I hope there's something better in the works.

This is a FANTASTIC choice of program for them. Mad props, because I never in a million years expected them to come up with something this fresh and unique, and in an Olympic year too. They should make a splash in Milano with this!

There's a separate Live results page - if you click on "Categories" you'll get a drop down menu & from there select the Junior to see the overall results.

I wasn't paying close attention to ReedAmbru, who bore me beyond belief, but I quite like FearGib's FD. There were definitely some messy spots that will get better as the season goes. That's a pretty underwhelming score, though, compared to where they started out last season.

Agree he needs a better costume. He's got some dark blue/burgundy plaid on his sleeves, the lower back half of his coat as well as a stripe down the sides of his slacks to match Lilah's dress, but it doesn't really pop against the black of the rest of the suit. It also doesn't help that we don't have great camera lighting - the colors show up much better in the KnC than on the ice.

I really liked the dark purple and the jacket for Lewis (much better than last season’s ugly clingwrap shirt). Maybe add some burgundy details to complement Lilah.

Also liked that, other than the slide, there weren’t a lot of reused elements (which prob explains some of the level issues). Callers had been generous on twizzles earlier but seemed harsh on them (they can take it :p )

Well, they know what they need to work on.

I cannot BELIEVE Fear/Gibson actually got me rooting for them. I think a pig just flew by the window. The power of a good program!
They've managed to get me back on board - this past Olympic quad has been ROUGH with their terrible choices for their FDs. This will absolutely SLAY in Sheffield next January. They really did a great job embodying some of the characteristics of Scottish dancing to the program. The first section was clearly the most competition ready at this point, but I expect the rest will only get crisper over the next 4-5 months. We'll have to see what GuigFab and SmaDie bring to the party, but I don't see FBCiz beating them at Euros - GPdF may be a different animal because France, lol.

ok what i really liked about Fear/Gibson's free dance is that it looked like ice dance! They were doing a cohesive program with actual highland dancing but still skating in hold and doing those things that make ice dance ice dance and not 100000 sbs crossovers just to look speedy and smooth.

do i think they will or should beat other teams? idk yet because the skating needs some work. But they are giving an actual attempt at ice dance which should be applauded.

Fear/Gibson's Scottish FD is definitely a winner. I love how into it Lewis is, especially in the choreo step! This dance could be amazing by the time of the Olympics. It's different and unique (thankfully so) ....Crowd-pleasing, but also with actual content, as other people have been saying. Looks to me like they've probably been putting the majority of their work into the FD. The Spice Girls RD is quite underwhelming, but knowing them, I'm sure they will improve it.

Reed/Ambrulevicius, though ... Their move to I.AM benefited them in terms of judging and placements (which is what counts), but their programs under Zoueva were so much more varied and interesting. With I.AM, it's either rock or techno, that's it. This FD feels like a rehash of things they've done before--and to less appealing music. It did not hold my interest, sorry to say (because I do like this team). It doesn't really feel Olympic-worthy. (P.S. At least their RD is one of the more appealing 90s RDs.)

Cui/Rogers look good. Seeing them live at U.S. Nationals last year, I found them very charismatic and interesting. The program here was pretty good, and their skating is nice and smooth. I think they should look to develop the chemistry and relationship between them even more, going forward; that will be their strength, I think, as a team.

I actually like the Fear/Gibson FD program! The bones are good. They are doing something different than their past several similar programs, there's hard technical content there, and they have fabulous performance quality. (Sitting on the boards has to go, though).

I think Fear/Gibson's program almost has too much going on because if it stays how it is, it's always going to look like a frantic unfinished mess. I applaud the risk they are taking as far as constantly doing something. I think the opening lift is so wonderfully unique and matches the music perfectly, and of course I love 500 Miles. The second half of the program completely loses me. If anything I wish they'd go back to the drawing board almost completely, use the Sunshine on Leith movie slower version of it to start, and then build to the original at the end. Or even if not an entire 500 Miles free dance, the music just needs completely reworked IMO.

I once again do not like the in-between of their twizzles. Talk about killing all speed and flow for the counter-rotation set.

I don't know that I'd use 500 Miles for a whole FD. I liked the slower song they had in the middle, but switching to Auld Lang Syne for the last section felt really out of place. I'm sure there are other recognizable Scottish songs that could work with their concept - maybe start off with one of those songs and end with 500 Miles because it's such a banger of a song.

I don't like how 500 Miles segues into Loch Lomond, it just doesn't work for me at all. I want to love it (my granddaddy loved singing Loch Lomond to us grandkids) but I just can't get be hind the music cuts. Sunshine on Leith is such a fun musical and using the softer version of 500 Miles that builds would work better -- I agree with tony! The switch to Auld Lang Syne which the Kerrs used for their Scottish OD doesn't work for me either. That first lift though was amaaazing.

Other senior teams:

Reed/Ambrulevicius – God Is A DJ / We Come One (Faithless) – This almost feels like not quite a new FD but a reworking of their Insomnia programme. As well as the music similarity, there are a lot of reused moves, including the “kick him in the balls” choreo lift to end. If so it’s not the worst choice; it has the benefit of familiarity to be ready for the qualifier without sticking with last season’s mishitting puppet FD. And they are ready; it was skated sharply and the elements are well integrated into the programme – since there is no cut-off they should be more than fine even if they splat in the RD again. Plus if this is their last season that’s reason to use something that they know works for them and they really enjoy.

Harris/Chan – Clare de Lune – This is a straight up reuse of last years’ FD and it’s working in terms of being in top form in September, though I think it could feel very tired by Worlds. But I am a Clare de Lune hater, especially this I Love You version. Most of the programme was very sharp and they were getting down in their knees and getting speed from their edges. The last 30 seconds or so were a bit messy. I thought Jason put his hand down in the choreo step but he got up with a big smile and they didn’t get a deduction so either it was choreographed or he’s a champ at styling it out.

Cui/Rogers – White Crow – In white and baby blue with sheer and sparkles – This music seems to elevate any skaters that choose it and C/R are no exception. Great positions from both and they hold them. I loved the split jump entry into their twizzles and the catch-foot spiral at the start of the one-foot step. Good ice coverage in the lifts. They’re not the fastest team and there are some moments when they’re clearly using crossovers to build speed into the elements. Charlie White-esq running steps into the choreo slide at the end.

An outside bet for the last Skate America spot? I still think it will (and should) go to the Browns but C/R are making the case to at least be considered.

Koncius/Shchepetov – Umbrellas of Cherbourg with rain sound effects to open – Also in white and baby blue - Very well skated with decent speed and nice closeness between them. Strong lifts, including a great stationary lift with her in a split position at the start of the combo. Nice ice coverage in the circular steps. I could have done without the cheesy umbrella mime at the start. (Note to skaters: Umbrellas of Cherbourg is not actually about umbrellas.)

Sabourin/Bermejo - generic track which Shazam tells me is called “My Life Is Going On” / Bella Ciao in da club remix - red boiler suit with garter, another crop top for her – Well, they’ve certainly got a unique perspective. Step up in ice coverage compared to the earlier teams, nice rhythm to their skating at the start, good straight line lift down the length of the rink. Weak and somewhat mismatched positions from both. His twizzles were not twizzling.

Bushell/Peña – Caro Emerald – Sophia in a royal blue dress I think I’ve seen before – A nice lightness to their skating but the music has character, it needs more expression. Close in the twizzles but she stumbled, very lucky to get called L3. Very fast rotational lift at the end but he botched the exit on the second half of the combo, straight into the ending position. Despite the errors their skating and unity has clearly improved since last season.

Borysova/Freeman – Poison – beige shirt for him, white and pink dress for her – Comfortable and measured performance, but needs more interpretation. I don’t really buy him as a murderer (but I guess it’s always the ones you don’t expect  ). Interesting sit variation in the spin with her actually sitting on his knees. Great (but not new) choreo lift to end with her lying on his boot.

Karnes/Leggott – In This Shirt – Layla in sheer black palazzo pants over a black leotard, white top for Freddie – The music is a dirge and the choreo mostly generic (sorry Gabby) but I think it helped them to have something slower paced. Lifts cautious and basic but looked stable, so much better than over-reaching and worrying that he’d drop her. Skating with more freedom and expression once they got through the lifts, but getting messy towards the end. His twizzles are surprisingly stable. Nice back camel position in the spin. Got too far apart in the choreo step, not sure why the choreo twizzles were called !, they looked fine to me. The wide-legged trousers are stress inducing – they really need some proper costumes!

I’m wondering what the strategy will be for them this season. From a longer-term development perspective they’d probably be best going back to Florida, putting in a few months of solid training before the British Championships, and then doing a couple of B internationals in the new year. But BIS really needs another team with minimums, so do they throw everything at the wall (all their teams to competitions in Turkiye) and see if anything sticks?

Sabatini-Speciale/Kaye – I Hear A Symphony – in purple and black – Programme very open. Seem comfortable with each other but minimal expression. Difficult entry to the twizzles with Dana doing the splits, clunking down onto the ice in the choreo assisted jumps, problems in the spin (he caught the heel of his free blade).

And the juniors, because of course I've got lots to say about British junior ice dance:

Marler Davies / Black – Improvements across all aspects of their skating since last season: much better speed, ice coverage, line, unity, and more stability in the lifts. This is their fourth season together, and they’re now showing the benefits of having a solid, established partnership. The only thing that’s a bit concerning for their longevity is that they’re a junior team with a big age gap but a small height difference.

RD: Men In Back / Cosmic Girl – fabulous dress for Mimi (it helps to have a mum who works in fashion!) – I wasn’t expecting so many Men In Black programmes, but it’s a fun choice for juniors and I think these two do better with a character programme. Last season he was always looking down, and now there are lots of little choreographed head movements to keep him looking up. Decent speed but they slow for the twizzles and lift. Look comfortable in the patterns but not hitting key points. Mimi botched the second twizzle – she really is the new Phebe Bekker.

FD: Porgy and Bess – Mimi in Lilah Fear’s old dress from F/G’s West Side Story FD – Very well executed, strong and confident skate; good to see the competitive fight as well as the clean performance. Unfortunately the programme is rather a mishit. I understand wanting to do something more mature, but you’d think two theatre kids would have looked into what it’s about rather than using the music for a smiley jazz programme. If they wanted to do Gershwin, I think An American In Paris would have been a better choice: not kiddy but something lighter and more youthful, and would have allowed them to take advantage of Joe’s ballet training.

Slatter / Gregory – I’m feeling more optimistic about this team after seeing them live compared to on the JGP stream. He still has a long way to go but the basics are there; he’s already a much stronger ice dancer than he ever was a singles skater. Yes, it’s now Ashlie Slatter / the guy who skates with Ashlie, but that would probably have been the case if she’d gone a lot further than Romford to find a new partner.

RD: Rhythm of the Night / Moving on Up / Everybody Dance Now - Good speed, clubby vibes, lift a bit sketch. She has that innate quality, which so many ice dancers lack, of being able to dance like she’s been in a club at least once in her life (and she’s 16, so quite possibly she hasn’t). The middle music cut feels a bit on the nose, especially with the choreography which puts Ashlie closest to the panel 90% of the time with Louis skating along behind.

FD: Top Hat – washed out pastel dress / suit and bow tie (he wasn’t putting on his white tie or dancing in his tails) – I think this is well-choreographed because it’s one of the most entertaining junior FDs, even though when you get into it there isn’t much in the way of original moves or transitional content. They’ve strategized and are doing just enough to (hopefully) get levels but not extraneous things to trip them up. Ashlie can sell anything, of course, but Louis is keeping up with her in that respect. Not as obvious that she’s tracking him as at the JGP, but she’s definitely leading. Lifts are understandably a weakness so hopefully that’s something they can work on for next season, as she seemed to enjoy the acrobatic elements. Lots of smaller errors here: ropey twizzles, spin travelled, lift looked a bit unstable (he needs to learn to lose the face of doom!), losing speed towards the end, and the dreaded ! in the character step, which killed it for them

Stanclova / Kostron – Very solid technical skills but not much performance quality, they’ve got a good foundation to work on expressing more and connecting with each other.

RD: Bad Backstreet Boys edit – in black – Good control but not very engaging. Choreographed sit down in the midline step. Maybe a slight bobble at the end, they didn’t look very happy.

FD: Nothing Is As It Seems (Hidden Citizens) - She looked like she’s been to get a spray tan with Lilah Fear, but I think it might have been too dark mesh on her costume – Generic contemporary programme without much expression. Secure lifts, fast twizzles, he’s skating on two feet much more than she is.

Epps / Gilman – Are they still part time at I.AM? Hagenauer and I think another I.AM coach were with their senior teams, but it was only Nick Buckland at the boards for E/G.

RD: Lenny Kravitz medley – Her sparkly black dress is lovely but it is neither rock nor nineties – Rock is a good idea in theory to set them apart, but nothing about their skating or her look suggests that she would listen to this music from choice. Needs more aggression and less smiling. Tight pattern. Nice closeness and unison, drawing on their long partnership. She looked relieved after the twizzles. Air guitar!

FD: Moonlight Sonata / The Truman Show – They looked much more confident and comfortable with this than the RD. Jerky twizzles, big lobes in the diagonal step but shallow edges. He got his weight over the wrong part of the blade on the entry to the stationary lift and nearly biffed it, called as base level.

Psurna / Valor Giner – She has a lot of confidence and presence, and is clearly the stronger skater at the moment, but not in an “Andrea, have you heard of solo dance?” sort of way.

RD: Barbie Girl / Let’s Get Loud – highlighter pink dress – A little bit of posing at the start and some ponytail-ography but not really a Barbie programme. Tidy twizzles. He looked strong and stable in the lift but problems on the dismount.

FD: Turning A Page (Sleeping At Last) – in white and black - A generic lyrical programme which is a shame as she seems like she’d do well with something more dynamic. Twizzle problems in the FD and everything looked like it was hard work. He’s a stable lifting partner.

Klesalova / Klesal – More Czech siblings. Also technically competent but seems like they’re still searching for their on-ice identity.

RD: Freed From Desire / Everybody Dance Now rap remix – blue costumes which could have been worn for any theme - Super generic programme with an awkward rap dance break in the midline step.

FD: Grease (Greased Lightning / Hopelessly Devoted / We Go Together) – Good Sandy poodle skirt, which he flipped twice – Sorry, everyone knows what Grease is about, and “the chicks’ll cream” blaring while you’re skating with your bro/sis? The referee blew the whistle because there was something on the ice, and I guess it must have fallen off one of their costumes because they got a -5 deduction for the interruption. Not very expressive until they got into the choreo step where they were clearly having fun. Strong lifts – good curve in the curve list and fast rotational lift to end but awkward dismount.

Edler / Hoermann – I’m completely perplexed by their packaging choices.

RD: Groove Is In the Heart – Day glo orange and green from head to toe. I don’t recall anyone dressing like this in the 90s – Lots of finger pointing, confident pattern, fast twizzles, steps looked like hard work.

FD: Yello medley - He’s dressed for the Masquerade Waltz and she’s wearing a sparkly red skirt suit. Smooth but simple one foot step. Wonky spin entry. Fall on nothing heading into the steps. Not much connection or expression.

Belovodjaninova / Tokarev – “Happy to be here” non-sibling Czech team

RD: All or Nothing – sparkly blue dress – Small pattern, wonky twizzles, sketchy feet in the lift. Looked like they were having fun.

FD: Instrumental Aladdin – baby blue dress, he’s all in white - Egyptian arms. Many, many Egyptian arms. Trying with the expression but a bit one note. Very messy twizzles. Hand down in the choreo step.

And the advanced novices:

I hope these kids had fun competing in Sheffield but it was a shame no European teams entered (no British AdvNov teams exist this season, as far as I know) and so we only had two teams who go up against each other all the time at home.

Anyway, I thought both were great – for such young skaters they skate really ‘big’ with speed and expression, and have nice clean technique.

Li/Zhu – A sibling team in disguise! She’s really excellent: great knee bend, beautiful stretched out positions, projecting to the rafters. Nick Buckland with them, looking tired (congrats on the new baby, Nick!)

Starlight Waltz to Piano Man, which isn’t exactly age-inappropriate but seems an incongruent choice for a pre-teen in a pink tulle explosion. Big pattern, but you could see the effort in their push.

Quickstep to That Man – She was in Penny Coomes’ RD dress from the 2013-14 season, so I guess Isabeau gave it back after she was done with her Material Girl exhibition. Very crisp with their upper bodies but slightly less so with their blades. Light and dynamic. Borrowed the toe steps from the Finnstep for their opening choreo.

FD: Dr Who – in blue: pinstripe suit for him, sparkly bodysuit for her – Fun and novel music choice for novices. He’s the doctor and she’s a friendly alien? Twizzles fast but tight. Nice use of levels and some interesting choreo elements.

Lukanin/O’Brien – With Kristin Fraser, of course. Got to wonder when it will be that they switch to Azerbaijan.

Starlight Waltz to a supremely saccharine love ballad I didn’t recognise. Nice smoothness, could use a little more knee bend.

Quickstep to If My Friends Could See Me Now. Perky! Nice speed, flow and pizzaz. Some mismatched leg lines.

FD: Wicked – in black with green and pink detailing, of course – Fluent performance. Great layback position in the spin. Some extremely cutesy choreo and choreographed facial expressions but you can get away with it if you’re 12. :)

Managed to catch up with a couple of programs on Youtube. Particularly wanted to see Fear/Gibson's FD.

I liked it and the music is a good choice for them. The stand out moments for me were the One Foot Sequence and the ending. The OFS covered so much ice and the twizzles at the end were excellent. The ending seemed to go on forever (it reminded me of a Dudley Moore comedy sketch where he kept doing a thousand endings to a piano piece) but it really worked. Very clever choreography to that music. Well done to them.
