ARE SPECIAL OLYMPICS FIGURE SKATING COMPETITIONS JUDGED THE SAME WAY AS A REGULAR OLYMPIC GAMES COMPETITION OR COMPETITION IN GENERAL?

Say,I was wondering about that? How ARE they run AND Judged? Are they run and judged the same way as the the regular Olympic Games (like my Nick will hopefully qualify for), or even Worlds, and the only difference is that it's people with disabilities? Or does the Special Olympics have their own way to judge and run things?

Are you thinking of doing a Special Olympics event, FSWer? That would be pretty cool! I've never been to a Special Olympics competition, but as far as I know, they work the same as any other competition. I spoke with the local Special Olympics coordinators and asked how it works.

Basically it is run the same way as the traditional program. The level in which a skater competes is based on the individual's skill set.

Skaters earn badges as they progress in skills-badges go from 1-10. At about badge 4, skaters can then start completing in levels where they will need a program. Levels go from1-6.

I have volunteered as an announcer and music tech for a Special Olympics figure and speed skating competition. My son, also has "judged" an SO competition. It is a heartwarming, special experience that brings smiles but also a few tears. If you ever have the opportunity to support them in a competition, whether figure skating or any other sport, I wholeheartedly suggest that you do so. It will be inspirational.
