American Airlines Holiday Flights at Risk Due to Pilot-Scheduling Snafu

I haven't been able to find information on the exact range of dates potentially affected (much less specific flights), but American Airlines inadvertently permitted any pilot who wanted time off during the holidays to take it. As a result, there are at this point a lot of pilotless flights. AA is currently offering 150% pay to pilots who volunteer to work during the problem period. [My comment: That is reportedly the maximum allowed under the union contract, but it seems inadequate to entice people back to work.]

Those planning to fly into San Jose early on AA should keep on top of this. The best I can tell, there's nothing to be done at the moment unless you want to plunk down the money for a cancelable full-fare ticket on another airline.

I heard it on the radio earlier. It's funny... if you don't have a flight booked on American around the holidays.

I hope that everything works out for everyone who has a flight booked though!

Ryanair had this problem a few weeks ago. On routes where they had high frequency, they tended to cancel there rather than on routes with lower frequency.

The pilots' union now seems to be on board, so it appears we can now begin to worry about the possible impact of winter weather rather than a shortage of pilots:

Since the mess I had getting to Boston in 2014, I've been worried about winter weather along with the pilot situation. I'm good at multitasking, lol. In 2014 I planned to arrive in Boston at about 8 a.m. on Monday. Giant weather system hits and I wasn't able to fly out of Cleveland until Wednesday evening and didn't get to my hotel until midnight Wednesday night. All the sightseeing I had hoped to do went out the window since competitions were underway Thursday.

I am glad that the pilot situation seems to be resolved!

One of the problems with the internet is that it makes all of us aware of what has happened to other people, even if it hasn't happened to us directly. So much to worry about!
