For those in Canada, TSN & Sportsnet will be showing complete TV broadcast of events while CBC will be going back and forth with sports (Like NBC main channel) lets just say that probably one of the TSN or Sportsnet channels most likely will have the early groups for figure skating (with Brenda, Kurt & Carol) before switching to the CBC TV channel for the final flights.
If it’s similar to what they did for Tokyo 2020, the full broadcasts on TSN/Sportsnet might be the international feed with the other commentators. I remember watching the gymnastics this way and it was the international feed commentary every time. Only the main network was getting the Kyle Schewfelt commentary. Hoping they do as you suggest above and have the actual CBC team for the whole thing. I seem to recall that’s how it was in 2018.

CBC’s Gem shows full events too. I thought it was all international commentators but Women’s Snowboard had Canadian commentators last night.

So I was just reviewing the end of the Team Pairs Short broadcast and it specifically says figure skating coverage starts on TSN2 at 8:30 pm ET and on CBC (TV) at 11:00 pm ET.

The same as @honey, I recall that the CBC commentators were used for all the figure skating TV coverage in 2018 even when it was only shown on another channel. IIRC that was always one of the Sportsnet channels. Of course back then they were actually at the venue and Canada had a much stronger team with very high expectations, so who knows what they will do this year.

I'm kind of torn as to whether I want their commentary. I cannot believe that Kurt could be so surprised at the results so far - "never saw that coming". Well where have you been, because I could see it coming from a mile away. On the other hand, I usually like some sort of commentary but all the choices this year are all pretty blah.

I don't like the international feed, and it wasn't airing yet on CBC so I ended up watching the ladies short on NBC (where they had nothing but positive things to say about Maddie)

Do you or anyone know if skating is on TSN2 daily at 8:30? I looked on the Bell Fibe guide for today and it does show Olympic coverage after at 8:30 on TSN2, but skating's not mentioned. And the CBC website shows times for streaming, but "nothing scheduled" for CBC television, which I take to be the main network. Do they wait till the day of to announce it?

I'm a skating fan from way back. Used to be, the most frustrating thing was the Canadian and US coverage of championships airing at the same time--even commercials were often synchronized! But now, it's very difficult at least for us older folk to find out when we can watch or record skating. (My WiFi can't manage streaming without stopping every few minutes.)

Hope you are right, @Parsley Sage

@Dasia - I'm sorry but I can't give you a definite answer to your question. I'm trying to piece things together myself. At the end of last night's Team Event (Day 2) they put up a graphic showing that CBC TV (main network) will be showing figure skating and this time no mention of any TSN coverage. I don't know if that means they intend to cover the complete Team Event Day 3 or not.

Last night they showed the second group of the Women's Short program and the entire Men's Free but both were tape-delayed with Brenda, Carol & Kurt, starting around 10:30-ish ET. (Women were much more delayed than the Men). TSN2 showed everything live but used the OBS (Olympic Broadcast System - official IOC international broad) with Belinda & Olly. I don't think the main network planned to go to the skating as early as they did but some of the skiing events were postponed so I think they had earlier airtime available. IIRC my listing showed they weren't planning to show the skating until an hour later.

So back to tonight. To confuse things even more for me, in my house there are 3 pvr's, different models but on the same cable package. Each one has differences in the listings for CBC, TSN, & Sportsnet. Right now one is showing CBC main network as having Figure Skating in a separate block from 8:00pm to 11:30 pm ET. According to the official Olympic schedule the actual skating start at 8:15 pm and ends at 11:21 pm so this listing would seem to indicate we may be seeing everything live on the main network with Brenda, Carol & Kurt.

I am also seeing a list on Sportsnet West, Sportsnet Pacific & Sportsnet One for multiple sports including figure skating from 8:00pm - Midnight ET. Sportsnet Ontario has the same info but starting an hour later so from 9:00 pm - Midnight ET.
Perhaps Sportsnet will have the OBS feed tonight instead of TSN. Who knows.

So far NBC has been showing all the figure skating live on the West Coast feed. My eastern NBC feed breaks for News for 1/2 hr at 10:30. On Thursday that meant that they showed everying live on the west coast but partially tape-delayed on the east coast. Last night the Team Men's Free was almost finished at News time and in fact they finished showing the Men live before going to the News. Tonight the event should actually be completed by news time.

That's okay, thanks for the reply. It's all very confusing. It seems they're showing the finals of the team event tonight on the main network, so I've set my PVR. It seems they're making the schedule on the fly, depending on what's happening with the skiing etc.

So revealed on CBC at the end of the Team Event, the Men's Short, which starts at 8:15 pm ET, will be shown on TSN - probably once again the OBS feed. Usually if they don't give a TSN #, it either means it will be on TSN1, or on multiple feeds. CBC TV will show Men's Short starting at 10:00 pm ET. Imo, the coverage on CBC TV is unlikely to be complete. Roman skates first, by the way so is scheduled for 8:22 pm after the warm up. Keegan is in the final group and is scheduled to skate at 11:58 ET.

For those of you looking for the live stream times and links to the full competition - this should do you for the rest of the Olympics. Note that Gem live stream starts 10 minutes before the official event start time. All the links are already listed at Gem's website. The cbc.ca/sports schedule is up but the actual link doesn't appear until at least the event start time. However, other than the first part of the link the end has number part at the end has been the same as the Gem link so far so I have gone ahead and "created" the link. I tried this method with the Team Event and was able to get the active stream at the same time as the Gem link.

I wonder why they are not using Kurt, Carol etc like they did in 2014 and 2018. I mean, it’s better than not having coverage of the whole event. But this could have been a good opportunity to use Kevin, Patrick, Weaver, Osmond, Duhamel, etc

Last night was another one where I had issues connecting to the live stream. It didn't show up on the CBC app on my TV, nor on Prime, where I've also been able to see it. I was eventually able to get it going on my phone. But it's odd to me that I have the same CBC Gem app on both the tv and phone, but was only able to get the international feed of the whole event on my phone. I did switch to the regular CBC TV broadcast when it started at 9:45 (I think).

I appreciate all that CBC is bringing to us, but I just wish there was some consistency.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and also comparative medal expectations this time around.

My guess is that the Olympic Broadcasting System's international feed comes very cheaply with, (or maybe is just included anyway in), CBC's broadcasting rights purchase agreement with the IOC.

CBC has been doing less and less of their own coverage of figure skating for many years.

Then, why even have Kurt and Carol in the first place?

I know it's not on television, but the CBC does stream these events and will often use their own commentators for the streaming.

I mean, I will take complete coverage with kinda annoying commentators over no/little coverage (or even one less skater with excellent commentary, but over the years, that is a position a lot of posters don't actually take).

My memory says the only time CBC has used their own commentators for streaming is when the streaming program is also being televised (e.g. Road to the Olympic Games), or for events that actually occur in Canada for a very long time now. I could be wrong?

I watched Nationals this years via streaming, and it was Ted Barton with different skaters. I guess CBC is not involved in that?

Just realized the tragedy that there’s no FS tonight. :wuzrobbed:wuzrobbed

One more full day of “no official decision doping talk“. :fragile:

If you want doping updates, I've posted the different articles and statements that came out today in the Russia thread in the GSD forum.

Also, each day at, I believe, 10pm EST there is the official IOC press conference CBC's Devin Heroux has been fantastic about live tweeting everything discussed, with extra focus on the skating, so you can follow his twitter then and there.
There won't be any official decision yet, though, as the hearing is taking place this weekend (I'm hoping it starts first thing in the morning, Beijing time).

Thanks. I read both threads discussing it and got super tired of the same questions and statements coming back again and again, so I wasn’t looking forward to another day of rehashing. The French article quoting Roman was interesting though, coming from inside the bubble.

Yes CBC was involved - Nationals occurred in Canada. That was exactly my point. The Beijing Olympic Games are NOT occuring in Canada. This year they are in China.

Watching the ice dance with V/M commentating, I found that Tessa offered very little of value, however Scott was FANTASTIC at commenting on the technical aspects. He was able to point out every little thing that affected levels and GOE that are easily missed by the viewers and described it in an easy to understand way. I'd love for CBC to utilize him more in the future!

I like how CBC had a different commentary team for each discipline, if only for the sake of variety. Too bad Patrick or Kevin could not do the men (of course, Kurt most certainly fits the bill of famous Canadian male figure skater). I thought all of the newbies contributed well. I say milk 2018 as best they can.

I didn't see much of the CBC tv coverage as I was watching the live stream but I did catch a bit of the women's SP with Kurt & Kaitlyn Ormond. I thought Kaitlyn was great. 🙂
