Southwest Pacific Regionals was held right before(?) Skate America that year. I attended both in 2011 and I assume the local clubs' resources/volunteer base were stretched pretty thin that year (ETA - I'm not defending USFS here ).
My understanding is the agreement with the host "organization"/city generally requires SOME promotion. I was working in the area and...no ONE I worked with even knew the event existed...
Ya know...you could get a sheet of ice (temporary) at Navy Pier. Then they could have the main Nationals events at the United Center. It's 25 drive without traffic, but Chicago is so fun.
I'm all in on them coming to Columbus, OH again. That US Nats was incredibly well run, in a great area with lots of food options, and the ice issue would be non existent since they are such a big complex with the practice rink right there. It's also not far from the airport. Come back to Ohio!
