Because up until FB/C announcing their comeback/partnership, it was looking like a very clear path to the gold medal at the Olympics after dominating this quadrennial. It would be odd otherwise to 'go out on top' before the Olympics, when that's the biggest goal for most top skaters.

If they are getting dumped to such severe levels, doing a press conference isn't going to fix anything. And the fans will still rally behind them if they feel they've been unjustly scored. We've seen it before, and it doesn't matter whether fans know any rules or not (cough cough B/K days).

I will say though that since Charlene is reposting all of the commentary pointing out the judging (including from AnythingGOEs, who as far as I know have always taken the Jackie Wong "I'm unbiased... usually" approach), I have little hope that they will actually dump the program and start over...
