Phil Hersh wrote an article about the press conference. It has a bit more information on some of her responses: http://www.globetrottingbyphiliphersh.com/home/2021/10/21/pairs-skater-vanessa-james
This section was particularly interesting to me. When I first saw her statements, I interpreted...
I just want to point out that technically all Adult Participants are mandated reporters. That was actually one of the sweeping changes implemented by the Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017. It's specifically tied to suspected sexual misconduct and/or child abuse. The exception is that...
There are 12 claimants (SafeSport's version of victims/survivors). There are WAY more witnesses who've been interviewed as part of the SafeSport investigation. In the TSL conversation, there was a mention of ~60 witnesses who've been interviewed by the Center so far and that figure sounds about...
I would be all for it! As for feasibility, I'm not sure if the Center would ever establish anything like that but I could see individual NGBs compiling a list.
You're correct - the JAMS arbitrators are responsible for upholding/modifying/overturning some of SafeSport's decisions. That was one of the first things that jumped out to me about the petition - it seemed to conflate them with the Center.
I am fully in support of the message that SafeSport...
Based on comments from people who work closely with her, Aljona was aware of the allegations against Sappenfield/Nyman before she arrived in Colorado. However, I'm not sure of the exact degree of knowledge that she had on them at the time (such as the number of complaints, the authorities that...
These are great questions!
1) From the results of the arbitration hearings that I'm aware of, I think the issue tends to be: a) Procedural problems or technicalities that arbitrators cite to overturn the decisions, b) SafeSport doing a poor job to defend their decisions, even in cases where the...
My apologies - I didn't understand the original question. "Everyone" is a mandated reporter in Florida. The only difference between professional and general reporters is that professionals are required to provide their name while general reporters can submit anonymously.
In my experience...
He is a mandated reporter. In Florida, there are two types of mandated reporters: general and professional. The list you are referring to are examples of professional mandated reporters. Furthermore, the Safe Sport Act of 2017 requires that he, as an adult authorized to interact with amateur...
Like always, putting my universal disclaimer here:
I just wanted to point out that there are a lot of people who were directly involved in this situation that were not mentioned in the USA Today articles. From editors and attorneys to parents and the authorities, there are several different...
100%. I've been carefully choosing my words here and only discussing things that were already made publicly available (both through articles & other avenues) or which I was asked to share.
So sorry for confusing you, @missing !
@overedge It's a complicated situation - I'll need a bit of time to find a way to describe it without giving out any identifiable information. But, the extremely over-simplified version is that the survivor was terrified of coming forward and the Center...
Just a quick clarification:
There were a few other reports to SafeSport, DCF and the police before that. A few reports that I have access to were made in January, February and April of 2019. The August report was the one that officially launched the SafeSport investigation, however.
