    News & Experiences continued

The University my daughter attends in Columbus started vaccinating with J&J just as soon as it was EUA approved. Of course when it’s use was suspended there was much drama by the parents whose students were vaccinated both “how dare you endanger my child” and “when will you start vaccinating...

When and how should we open schools?

The remote option also closed with the end of the school year in my district as well. We have been bringing struggling primary students back to in person since the first nine weeks. One very real issue was that remote grades really do not reflect actual learning at the Primary level. Authentic...

When and how should we open schools?

How true! My room has a microphone & speaker system. When I wasn’t wearing it, it felt like I was shouting to be heard. On the positive side, a perk of teaching the “littles” is that they leave little notes all over my desk with hearts drawn all over them and love spelled with a capital L. I...

When and how should we open schools?

The school year is done! We were one of less than 100 school districts in Ohio that was able to go all day/every day in person without having to shut down. I am grateful that we made it but completely exhausted. It was touch-and-go October - December with quarantine due to community spread and...

When and how should we open schools?

That has been the Health Department’s guidance here since the beginning of January as long as everyone is wearing a mask. They also changed the quarantine rules at about this same time. There are still a ton of lunch/ recess/ restroom/ arrival/ dismissal rules that are in effect to ensure...

    News & Experiences continued

FWIW my county in Ohio (about an hour north of Dayton) just administered the first round of vaccines to school personnel Friday and Saturday. We have been successfully in session full time face to face since August.

    Things I’m sick of tbh.....

I do, however, provide a safe learning environment to foster a child’s social, emotional, and academic growth between the hours of 8:00 - 3:30 daily. We also are supplying two meals a day to all children free this school year through a USDA grant. FWIW: My school has been full time in person...

    Things I’m sick of tbh.....

As a Primary teacher, I am used to being referred to as a “glorified babysitter” when in actuality we lay the foundation for a lifetime of literacy. The issues/pressures/workload are just as overwhelming as the secondary teachers. Over the years I have also been responsible for mentoring many...

When and how should we open schools?

Besides the broad points listed above, here are some of the “new normal” procedures in our day to day life at school. kids sanitize hands in and out of rooms like at the hospital must pre arrange a time for the kids to see the nurse (to protect the vulnerable who must see her every day) no...

When and how should we open schools?

You are right! All of these issues need addressed prior to returning to class, but money is not necessarily the resolution. I teach in a Pre-k -2 Primary building. We have been back to school face to face five days a week for about five weeks now. 1. Masks are worn by everyone inside the...

When and how should we open schools?

On the plus side, my kids keep coming up behind me to sneak a hug and tell me how much they love me and love being back at school. That’s probably not something that the high school and college instructors experience regularly. 😎

When and how should we open schools?

We have been back all day every day for a little over three weeks. There are of course layers and layers of safety and sanitization the teachers are now required to perform in addition everything else. We are suppose to also maintain a fully functioning google classroom that includes every...

When and how should we open schools?

I don’t know that your summary is accurate. The way I read most teacher's posts, mine included, is that this is a complex issue over which we have very little control. Every option discussed has both positives and negatives trying to balance health and safety concerns with educational needs. YMMV

When and how should we open schools?

O.K. I am now officially living in bizzaro world. We are set to open school full time on August 25th. Parents have the option to choose a boxed online option for remote learning, but must commit to a semester. There were very few parents choosing that option (@ 10 district-wide) until the...

When and how should we open schools?

As of yesterday, our students that choose remote learning must commit to a whole semester and will be using a boxed online program overseen by either a couple of paras or substitute teachers. We will still be expected to teach full time in person and maintain a google classroom that exactly...
