The only truly odd program they did was the weird free skate with the jarring style change mid program from last season. Their brand is Quirk, so makes jumping the shark tougher to achieve.
Although I wouldn’t classify it as my definition of jumping the shark (has to have a shocking/bizarre tone along with being a bad idea), this Jason program was a big head-scratcher. Brilliant skater with music from a brilliant musician, and chose obscure subdued music from said musician while...
Krylova and Ovsiannokov ending their Carmen free dance with (her/him?) pulling a bright red scarf out. SO OBVIOUS and OVER DRAMATIK. But of the times I guess.
Usually I want skaters to do new programs each season, but several programs this season are so good I’d like to see them kept for the Olys:
Alysa Liu- short program
Smart and Dieck - Dune
Turkkila and Versluis - Tango
Thoughts?
My biggest question re F-B/Ciz is age. They are 32/35 now, have never competed, and have a very short time to catch up to other skaters. But ice dance esp, of all the skating disciplines, has a history of odd developments.
I was so impressed by Jesse Eisenberg’s insight into bipolar disorders/ unregulated emotion, and about how more ‘typical’ people in the orbit of bipolar/hyper-charismatic people are treated by others, and how they manage their own feelings in the face of being compared to such...
In terms of OFF-ICE entertainment, you can't beat the Grischuk-Usova antics.
In terms of ON-ICE entertainment, back in that period it was so dominated by Russian style dramatics that it got old, and dance is NOW dominated by paint-by-numbers requirements so everyone looks similar. It's really...
At least the above venues are permanent. At Euros in Graz, Austria, the venue was a large tent. Despite the fact that there was a large skating arena in town. There was an outside food court and an indoor way-undersized restaurant. I saw great skating there because I moved from my bad seat but...
Re the brutalist - I read it was released earlier solely on the coasts and goes into wider release some time in January. I loved Adrien Brody in The Pianist and Liberty Heights so I will be seeing this one.
I just saw the animated movie “Flow”. A group of animals of different species help each other survive a worldwide flood. That’s the premise. The animation is beautiful. The animal sounds used are effective (no words). And the themes of empathy, friendship, and loyalty are incredibly touching. I...
just a comment - I went to the Salt Lake olympics. Scalping is legal in Salt Lake and I was able to obtain a mens short program ticket for $25! I paid full price for the other events, and had to get them thru a bundle with other sports (which ended up being a lot of fun). Of course planning to...
