The men's field these days is such that there are at least 10-15 men currently competing who could be on the podium one day and not qualify for the FS the next, and I'm barely exaggerating when I say that. I hope that people don't put too much pressure on Gogo to top his Olympic performance -...
Who knows if they would have ended if they had gone to the Olympics and skated well? I think the disappointment of not making the team had a big role to play in Evelyn's decision to retire. It wasn't just about her going to uni, because IIRC, they were planning to compete and even had GP events...
There were also a lot of rumours going around that Paul and Carol thought he needed a more traditionally "feminine" and glamorous partner to get to the top of the ranks. He was not out then (and wasn't until many years after he'd established his partnership with Piper) and was probably insecure...
How odd that it hasn't shown up yet, but two very complimentary comments are the only ones I can see. ;)
From what I remember, when the split with Paul was announced, SC's press release said Vanessa was retiring, but she spoke out to correct that assumption. I remember she was skating at the...
Mostly a good read, but some revisionist history that made me go, "Uhhh...":
"Poirier made to his first Olympics in 2010 with Vanessa Crone, and finished 14th. They seemed to be on a stairway to heaven, but Crone decided to retire, and Poirier found another partner..."
That's not the way I...
Gogo is pulling me out of the hopeless era of the last few years of Canadian men. :cheer: (Come at me, people, but I was never sold on Roman and gave up on him a lonnng time ago, and the fact that no one else was stepping up was not a good sign.)
I would bet $1000+ that if Schizas ends up anywhere on the podium at Nationals and her FS isn't a disaster (or there isn't a huge and obvious gap between her and the winner), she will be chosen to go to the Olympics.
So would I, but I don't think Skate Canada will think the same way. Their decisions when they've had to make these kind of choices have been notoriously conservative.
Unless someone has a big showing in one of the remaining GPs or wins by a big lead at Canadians, I would put a good-sized bet on them sending Schizas. I would disagree, but the way SC tends to make decisions, it's highly likely.
I know that was the way their split was officially presented, but I also know that there were rumours as soon as a few weeks after 2022 Worlds that Trennt was trying out with new partners before Evelyn had decided what she wanted to do, and also people who posted that they (Evelyn and Trennt)...
To me, this is starting to seem very much like Paul Poirier breaking up with Vanessa Crone in hopes of moving up in the World faster and yet being absolutely unwilling to leave Scarborough for other coaching, and then taking four full seasons to place higher at Worlds with Piper than his best...
