Solar flares are the reason for the Northern Lights. They're happening regularly. Activity has been unusually strong for about a year or so which, if memory serves, was predicted, and is the reason we've seen Northern Lights much further south than usual.
The death toll continues to climb :( According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, more than 60 pets died as well. However, more than 200 were rescued!

Death toll is at 151. The number of missing people varies. When I last checked BBC, it was 150, Reuters says "at least 40" and CNN says "at least 30".
Officials have said that some bodies may have been reduced to ash and may never be found. They've also said that some apartments are too damaged...
Death toll has now risen to 148. BBC reports that officials have said they have been through four buildings in connection with their investigation and further fatalities aren't ruled out.
What keeps getting to me is that everyone could potentially still be alive. :fragile:
Aussie Willy mentioned upthread that she's working in the safety department. If your experience differs, maybe different companies have different objectives/strategies?
I read about his death when the death count was still at 36 or so and was surprised to read about a firefighter's death this...
When they say they want to keep stairwells from getting blocked, it sounds like the building isn't designed to handle large-scale evacuation but I think a high rise should be designed so that every resident could potentially evacuate.
This is the third high rise/large residential complex fire...
A couple of days ago, I stumbled over a video celebrating 50 years of a three-building high rise block in Köln, Germany. One of the residents who they interviewed mentioned a time when a fire broke out on floor 4. He and his partner were on the upper floors (20-something or maybe even higher)...
The Guardian reports that firefighters are now heading to the top floors to reach those who had been trapped. What surprises me is that the buildings have been burning for around 24 hours and are still structurally sound enough so that there's been no mention whatsoever of a threat of collapse...
I'm not a fan of this tiara, period. It isn't huge but for the some reason, I find that the way it's constructed makes it seem that way. It looks very compact and sturdy. I prefer the more delicate looking ones.
My host mom's nephew (from back when I was an exchange student) is a UPS pilot out of Louisville. Fortunately, he's safe but they couldn't reach the family all of Tuesday evening and had to wait until Wednesday morning to find out.
Apparently, the plane had just undergone extensive maintenance...
