    Alysa Liu cheer/fan thread

One of my Oakland friends is a card designer, and designed a card inspired by Alysa’s Olympics FS. Look at this update!!! :cheer2:https://www.instagram.com/reel/DVhMuJHEkkL/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

    Alysa Liu cheer/fan thread

Seeing Alysa sit like that on the Today Show couch healed part of my inner Asian child. Even my fairly lenient Asian parents relentlessly trained us to be ladylike and proper and make ourselves small in any space we were in.

    Alysa Liu cheer/fan thread

USA Today interview with Alysa’s father Arthur, reflecting on his decisions that might have led Alysa to initially quit skating. He sounds a bit like my high-expectations Asian parents (who my sister and I considered pretty lenient among our peers) - high standards, wanted our time and efforts...

    Alysa Liu cheer/fan thread

Oakland institution Fenton’s Creamery (featured at the end of Pixar’s Up if you don’t blink) has offered Alysa free ice cream for life. 😁 I hope she takes them up on it...

    Ilia Malinin Fan Thread!

I can't stop thinking about the way Ilia immediately turned around and had that true moment of sincerity and sportsmanship to congratulate Misha on his win. He wasn't just getting in a quick hug for the cameras and then dashing backstage, he really took the time to connect. And it’s not like...

    Ilia Malinin Fan Thread!

Individual figure skating competition teaches grit like no other - there's no tapping out, no running out the clock, no depending on teammates if you're having an extraordinarily bad day. There's just the skater staring down the empty ice, wishing they could just get off and hole up in a dark...

Plane and Blackhawk helicopter crash in Washington DC

My sister has taken the direct SFO to DCA route for years on Alaska. (I took it myself back in 2023.) It's not that often though, maybe once a day, IIRC. My sister also says nobody calls it Reagan, everyone she knows/works with still calls it National. Or DCA. Which tells you something about...

Plane and Blackhawk helicopter crash in Washington DC

My sister flies into DCA a lot for work with a federal government department. It’s so much closer to DC than the alternatives. I can’t imagine Congress (whose members also use it a lot) would vote to reduce flights there. Shutting it down was even on the table once, to clear out the airspace...

Plane and Blackhawk helicopter crash in Washington DC

People on the Airliners.net forum are saying that the helicopter was twice as high as it should have been. I’m sure the investigation will look into that. If this tragedy finally gets the FAA to redesign the DCA airspace and its rules, at least their deaths won’t be in vain. It’s so so awful.

U.S. Figure Skating confirms that athletes, coaches, and family members were on American Airlines Flight 5342 that crashed in D.C.

NYTimes reports the skaters were returning from the juvenile, intermediate, and novice camp. ? So young.

Oh no! I was just reading about this crash, and also catching up with Nationals. So awful. I hope the families can be notified soon and find peace.

Gracie Gold's memoir published February 2024

I didn't truly understand the magnitude of this mindset shift until I had a child with someone who, as a child himself, was only given affection and opportunities for connection by his parents and grandparents when he was perfect. And often, nothing my husband ever did was right in the eyes of...

    2024 US Figure Skating Championships

Hubs is FINALLY home from the work trip. I showed him Katie's SP from Nationals and he recognized her and her coach! (Too bad they also didn't show her mom just to confirm hahaha.)

    2024 US Figure Skating Championships

It was also a Southwest flight, and as far as I can tell, no SF/LA-area airports have Southwest flights direct to Columbus. So it would be quite a lot of layovers to get to Columbus if they were traveling from somewhere other than where they lived. ? Especially coach AND skater with mom.
