A few clips of Laurent Tobel, the 1999 French National Champion. It's probably a good thing that there has never been another skater quite like him. He is particularly noteworthy for his strange, slow straightline footwork and humorous choreography (not altogether to American taste :shuffle:). At 6'4" with a powerful but lean build, the dude makes Evan Lysacek look puny!

1997 Cup of Russia SP -- Art of Noise :inavoid:

1997 Worlds LP -- Pink Panther :watch:

1999 Worlds SP -- Aliens/Close Encounters of the Third Kind

1999 Skate Canada LP -- Austin Powers Simply amazing. Skating while the arena's fire alarm was going off. :respec:

She had issues with, I think, her back. She tried to return to competition but didn't make it to Nationals, AFAIR.

Thanks - this is great. Question for Trivia experts: Who is the female skater who skated into the stadium with the flame? I recall that she actually fell rounding one of the turns...but this seems to have been edited out of all known films of the event. I wasn't expecting that the official film of the Sapporo Olys would have shown it but I was hoping that it would be in some home-made film...or maybe somewhere in the vaults of NBC (or whichever company telecast it live)?

I've seen that too somewhere I think but can't recall where. I think perhaps one of those sporting bloopers shows? Sorry I can't help with that, or the name of the skater herself.

Interesting to note the high marks Karen Magnussen received in her free skating routine considering the two late mistakes she made...

re. 1972 Sapporo Opening Ceremonies skating torch bearer, I found these tidbits (but not yet a link to a film of the fall):

According to newspaper articles of Feb. 4, 1972 (the day after), the hapless young lady was a local skater, age 16, named Izumi Tsujimura. She fell most likely due to very high wind but quickly picked herself up and made it to the foot of the long staircase, where she handed the torch to runner (a "Mr. Takada"), who lit the cauldron. Tzujimura was never a member of an official Japanese figure skating team. She was just selected because she was a young local skater.

Interestingly, Ms. Tzujimura was not the first torch-bearing skater to fall during an Olympic opening ceremonies. That "honor" went to speedskater Guido Caroli of Italy during the 1956 Cortina D'Ampezzo games. According to numerous on-line articles, his skate caught on a TV cable and he went down. Somebody helped him up and he went on to light the cauldron himself. Caroli had competed at the '52 Oslo Olympics but he is best known for this blooper moment.
