I read today that H&M were asked to be presenters at the Oscars tonight but they turned it down. If they wanted a high-profile glamorous celebrity life like their naysayers insist I think they would have accepted.

I don't think they officially step down from royal duties until the end of March so possibly they're not free to accept these types of things until they are no longer officially representing the royal family?

You clearly don't know anything about Jennifer Lopez either.

Jennys from the bloc[k] gotta stick together, ;).

J.Lo worked for everything she got. Started out as an excellent dancer doing tv shows like In Living Color and going on tour with Janet Jackson (the dancing required for Janet is demanding), and has turned it into acting career where the likes of Frances Ford Coppola praised her skills when she started. She has since become a multimedia star selling millions of records as well as starring in successful movies. She's made such a name for herself that she with Shakira just performed the Superbowl Halftime show.

So if anything, I would respect someone from the Bronx who seriously had to work her way up from the bottom and became as big and famous and she is now.

I hope not. This surprises me. I don't know anything about Alex R but JLo just doesn't seem classy enough to rub elbows with them. What do they talk about? Her pole skills?
Clearly, or you'd know that it's ARod (or A-Rod) and not Alex R. As for J.Lo, as others have noted she's been incredibly successful in the entertainment industry and as an entrepreneur and does charitable work besides. She's smart, talented and driven. If Meghan hadn't married Harry, it's the kind of success she might have aspired to herself.

I'm not a fan of most of JLo's music, but she's also been very active in a variety of charities, including 9-11 and post-Sandy causes. I think she was also named as an Ambassador for one of the UN Foundations for causes related to Women and Girls' health issues. I recall her also being active with one of the hospitals in the Bronx through her family foundation.

I think Meaghan was also involved with some of the UN programs for women, so they'd have that in common.

The downtown Eastside is more bang for her and their buck, being cited as the poorest postal code in Canada. I don't know if this is true, but I've been told by people who do charity work that poverty in Victoria is more similar to poverty in Seattle, ie, far more spread out than concentrated in a single neighborhood. (You can see that difference clearly by comparing the two street papers, Megaphone in Vancouver, which is so concentrated on the downtown Eastside, and Real Change in Seattle, which is more diverse and also focuses on urban poor and economically marginal people.)

Is poverty better hidden in Victoria, being the provincial capital?

Yes, except when it erupts into things like legal disputes over tent cities.

IMO Meghan would have had more impact visiting a not-for-profit in Victoria, to dispel the notion that Victoria is more than a faux-British seaside community, and to bring attention to the socio-economic problems there. I don't think it's exactly news that there are socio-economic problems in the Downtown Eastside.

I agree. As was mentioned above, had Meghan not married Harry she could have aspired to be like JLo. JLo has worked incredibly hard to get where she is. She is a good role model for hard, perseverance, and intelligence.

Of course I don't since my opinion doesn't jibe with yours. I do know she was a preening camera-hogging bitch on American Idol, esp to any pretty female.

I really doubt that Meghan would have aspired to soft porn which is what her half-time performance amounted to. (I'm really tired of seeing singers waggle their vajayjays.) In what way did that empower women or make her a good role model? I'm not doubting that she's worked hard but don't all of us work hard?

As for Alex's name, I don't know anything about him or what his nickname is or what sport he plays. Shoot me!

I think a lot of the world and perhaps even Canada is unaware of east side Vancouver. The first time I drove by it - for me it was horrifying and that was daytime. I was not prepared at all. Poverty/homelessness exists in every city in the world. My friend worked as a social worker in Eastside Vancouver and it broke my heart the stories she told me. No wonder prostitutes disappeared there to a psychopath 😔.

Whoa. That's a lot of internalized misogyny in one post. Harry and Meghan aren't celestial beings. They can learn from Jlo and Arod.

People not being aware of the problems of the Downtown Eastside (and I don't necessarily agree that these problems aren't well known) doesn't mean that Meghan couldn't have used her presence to draw attention to problems on Vancouver Island. As I mentioned above, apparently Victoria has more homeless people per capita than Vancouver.

One could say that if this was all that you noticed, it says more about you than her.

She's a performer, it was a performance. You may not have liked it but that doesn't make JLo stupid or inferior to Meghan, who is a fellow actress. And who knows, maybe Meghan likes pole dancing since it is practiced as a sport nowadays and even if she doesn't like it, I'm sure she respects it as it requires some serious muscle.

Arguably, some have it easier than others.

JLo is a Latina woman who has a Puerto Rican heritage (and used her performance to make a political statement, by the way) and Meghan is a woman of color. As American citizens, they probably can find some common ground.

As for Alex's name, I don't know anything about him or what his nickname is or what sport he plays. Shoot me!

And yet, you know that there's nothing he, Meghan and Harry could possibly talk about?!

Ok. So.... Peter Philips and his wife Autumn have separated!! I just read it on the DailyMail... I thought that they looked like a pretty solid couple, with no rumours swirling around at all. The article says he was surprised because he thought they were a happily married couple.

Too bad.

Are you saying that as a woman if I don't like or respect all women that I'm misogynist? I agree H&M aren't celestial beings and neither are JLo & Arod.

FTR I think JLo is beautiful & a great dancer. I also think she's a mediocre actress but then I only base that opinion on her early movies. I haven't seen any of hers for years. Call me a prude if you want but I saw nothing beautiful or uplifting or inspiring about her half-naked costumes or her (IMO) tasteless moves. If you want to talk about women of color who uplift others then let me point out Viola Davis & Alicia Keys for example. I don't think women need to take their clothes off or twerk in order to be good role models, in fact the reverse.

Be that as it may, J.Lo is a self-made woman who made herself into one of the most famous women in the world and has accomplished a lot on her own sheer will and ambition with talent that people appreciated. There is no reason she can't talk to people who are part of or are affiliated with a family that was born into privilege and titles and thus have people conditioned into thinking they are born superior to the plebs. You make it sound like it's an insult for her to be even seen in the same frame as royalty or ex-royalty or whatever the hell Meghan and Harry are now. Meghan didn't have 1/10 the career J.Lo has had before she married Harry and as a working actress, I bet she understands J.Lo's worth.

OMG, is it considered a personal affront to anyone here if I don't revere the same people that the majority does? How ridiculous. Tons of people love Kim Kardasian. As someone who came to prominence by leaking her sex video, I don't think much of her. Is that ok with the masses? Or if enough people tell me I'm wrong about Jlo will that make me look up to her?

Gloria Estefan made it big without taking her clothes off or jutting her private parts at people. I think she was a wonderful role model. I could list plenty of people of color who made it the classy way.
