gk--someday Mike Leigh must get an honorary Oscar (if he hasn't already) for films like "Naked." So good and so overlooked....

Indeed. I especially loved David Thewlis' performance. One of the greatest performances of the decade IMO.

I'm pretty wild about Thewlis. Give me his nuanced performances over "beefcake" any day. I wasn't surprised when he wasn't nominated for an Oscar as the "stars" like Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins and Robin Williams were grabbing nominations. I WAS surprised that he wasn't nominated for a Bafta. He and Leigh received "best" awards at Cannes though.

He wasn't even nominated at BAFTA?!?! What were they watching?!?! That's pretty unbelievable.

Schindler's list
The Piano

I remember studying The Piano in film class. It's not my favourite Campion film but the images in that film were extraordinary and full of content. I also loved the music by Michael Nyman.

Forgot to mention The Dreamlife of Angels. One of the finest French films I've seen.

I also liked Open Your Eyes.

Silence of the Lambs - BTW, Michelle Pfeiffer was initially cast as Clarice Starling, but backed out after being disturbed by the subject matter. The basement finale is something I can watch over and over and still get a thrill.
Thelma and Louise - Really great performances by Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis. Groundbreaking in its portrayal about women's distrust in society.
The Crying Game - Androgyny when it still was a bit shocking to moviegoers. Best movie of 1992.
Schindler's List - Probably the best movie made about the holocaust. One of the best films ever!
The Joy Luck Club - Beautiful film about understanding your mother and seeing older people as bearers of wisdom, rather than people to look past.
Pulp Fiction - Cutting edge at the time, and I like it despite the fact John Travolta was in it. LOL (I hated Forrest Gump, and was pulling for this movie to win in 1994)
Bridges of Madison County - Maybe one of Meryl Streep's best acting roles, and that is saying a lot! Story about sacrificing your love to remain loyal to your duties is something we can at some point all understand
Boogie Nights - Intelligently made film about the porn industry. A break in character for Mark Wahlberg. Loved the fact that Burt Reynolds resurfaced after decades as a smarmy porn producer and loved that Julianne Moore took the risk to play a porn star.
Saving Private Ryan - Intelligently made WW2 film that is still much more realistic than films in the past. American made WW2 films always tended to be glorified and overproduced. Not this one.
Life Is Beautiful (La Vita e Bella)- Italian film. One of the most poignant films ever made. I choke up when watching it.
American Beauty - One of my favorite films ever. I can watch Annette Benning play neurotic, suburban wife forever! Too bad she was up against Hillary Swank in Boys Don't Cry
Boys Don't Cry - Wow. Hillary Swank turned in one of the best acting performances ever.

I like your list. The only one in your list that I probably didn't like very much was The Joy Luck Club because I found it sentimental. But many will disagree which is completely fine of course. But thanks for reminding me of The Crying Game. I agree that it was one of the finest movies of the decade (forgot to include it in mine).
