This blog talks about how many times the key word “Hanyu Yuzuru” is searched on google in Japan. (Yuzu received the award for “the most searched name of the year” before.)
First, it shows the data on other celebrities such as a pop group star and an actress. They are searched roughly 500.000 times/month.
Hanyu Yuzuru 4 million times in Feb. 2014
During the GPF, the nationals, and the worlds, which last only a couple of days per time, he is searched over 1.250.000 times each in the respective months!
Even during the off-season, when he hardly appears on TV, there are constantly 300.000~700.000 searches for him.

Today in June 1st, Yuzu attended the promotional event for World Blood Donor Day in Tokyo. https://vine.co/v/ehi3H1TxqhY
Japan is an aging society and the decrease of blood donation from young people is alarming, this event urges young people to take action in blood donation..

Yuzuru's college schedule is very tight. He studies till midnight. Due to so many events, training and college schedule, Yuzuru sleeps only 4 hours per day sometimes.

Collection of all today's video about Yuzuru new long program. There's a hint of a sequence which looks amazing:

Yuzuru Hanyu at interview after DOI 2015
“I want to challenge myself next season, so I aim to broaden my boundaries. And I hope this program will be suitable for audiences who are not from Japan. I think I may be the only current Japanese male skater that can skate a program that is so full of Japanese elements. I want to show the sensitivity, the essence of Japanese culture and the music* in a way that only I can express. I hope this can be a program that fits me and my style.”

It interesting that so many of the Japanese skaters continue their education concurrently with skating, compared to skaters in the U.S. who more commonly defer their university studies or only take a part-time course load.

From what I've seen so far I am very excited about Hanyu's new LP. Love the music, his choice of costume and how Hanyu continues to challenge himself. :respec:

Thanks for this article. I love how unsatisfied he is with the World silver medal. :)

I do worry a bit about him attempting 3 quads in the long. It's so incredibly difficult, mentally as well as physically. We've seen Javi and Kovtun try this many times and not succeed very often.. I'd kind of rather see Yuzu focus on getting more consistent with 2-quad LPs and just having a steady, no-drama, successful season next year. But OTOH, I love his ambition .....

I am kind of worried because of his layout which might be:

4S - 4T - 3F - spin - step sequence - 4T2T - 3A3T - 3A1lo3S - 3lo - 3lz - spin - step sequence - final spin

I don't even expect anything near "clean" next season. I only hope that when he feels too tired, better to pop jump than to fall, it looks so painful.:wuzrobbed

And take note that skaters all heard of the new scale and negative GOE for quads maybe around a month before us. Yet he still decided to go for 3 quads.:slinkaway

Anyway here's a "short" version of his new FS. Beautiful 4S at the beginning and then a splat-fest following as he tried to do 2 other quads and a triple axel combo in a small rink. I wonder why they didn't broadcast the rather clean version (as report on Sunday he didn't fall). The program is still empty except the choreography sequence (it's just 3 minutes): https://youtu.be/b_JoZw9FbLI

I feel a bit scared anytime he jumped it looked like he might jump on audience. It's very rough now, and the final version is going to be 1:30 minutes longer. My take is that with 3 quads I don't even expect him to go clean next season. I only hope he should rather pop jump when he is too tired.

About Japanese style, I think that currently only Hanyu himself has the ability to portray the role of an Onmyoji. Hanyu himself said Onmyouji character fits him better than a samurai figure. He has very strong self-awareness.

In a recent interview on tivi, Hanyu said, "I have slight built, so I cannot play the role of a samurai, I could possibly be a female impersonator (like in Kabuki)."

So Hanyu himself knows if he plays samurai, it might not work as he is too slender. Mura once played samurai and it was kind of a success. But you don't have to play samurai to show that you're Japanese. In fact Abe no Seimei is a special role that currently only Yuzuru himself can do because of his physical appearance.

Abe no Semei should be for someone who is tall, slender, strong but also has delicacy. If you have never read anything about Abe no Seimei, or watch anything about this character, you might find it hard to understand why Hanyu himself said so. In some legend, Abe no Seimei is also talked to be son of a fox demon, so the actor should have fox-like feature.

This is one of the track that Yuzuru is using for the the choreo sequence in his new FS: http://youtu.be/h_6vtGifX2k

Note that the one who is dancing in the video is Abe no Seimei and he is a man. Hanyu himself said he can even play the role of a woman, so he thinks he fit this role. The kind of male actor that play female role is very specific in Japan (look for Kabuki) and in fact this tradition is very Japanese. Hanyu can do that because his physical built is slender with soft lines.

Bonus, this is an Onmyoji in manga (Japanese comic book) and a very famous one:
http://static.zerochan.net/Sumeragi.Subaru.(X).full.27153.jpg

I was kind of shock to see Hanyu for the first time because he looks so much like this character (an Onmyoji called Subaru Sumeragi). And this manga (comic book) was written in 1990-1993, even before Hanyu was born.

I dont know why he is doing that. He doesnt need it to win at all, and he is begging for inconsistency and injury..

Well. Here's the thing: He doesn't need it NOW. But who knows by 2018?

Not upping the tech cost Patrick Chan the olympic gold. Denis Ten might add another quad to his repertoire, Javi might stabilize his 3 quad layout and gain bigger PCS, Boyang Jin has 3 seasons to emerge as a major threat. The competition does not sleep, they're going to get better.

Besides, it seems to me that Hanyu does it because he genuinely loves jumps and perhaps want to be remembered as an extraordinary jumper. I wouldn't be surprised if his final goal for 2018 was including 3 different quads: 4T, 4S, 4Lo. Just for the satisfaction of having done that.

Yup. After all Hanyu is crazily competitive in nature. He doesn't like being left behind in the quad battle. If Hanyu were as healthy and genetically strong as, let's say, Javi, he might have gone for 4 quads.

I believe he also said before that he wants to be the first to have done something - like being the first to land the 4Lo. It's just his personality.
Actually, I'm just happy the 4A doesn't seem to be a goal (maybe, or something...)

Actually, I remember in an interview, he specifically said that he doesn't particularly need to be the first to do something - in particular, I remember he specifically said that he won't put the 4Lo in his program just so that he can be the "first".

Today is Olympic Day! (23 June) International Olympics Committee annually invites some of young top athletes to play another sport besides their expertise to promote "Olympics spirits" and the appeal of sports around the world.
On Olympic Day, the theme is "regardless of age or ability, enjoy more sports with no timidity."
This year, figure skater Yuzu (20 y/o) is invited to play boxing along with other athletes trying out other sports.
According to NHK sports news, IOC invited Yuzu to this event because of Tokyo will be holding 2020 summer Olympics and he is the gold medalist of Sochi Olympics.

"Yuzuru the boxer" doesn't look very convincing.
